Both 'Fantastic Four' And 'Daredevil' Will Feature The Classic Costumes

In official images from two upcoming Marvel properties, we're not seeing things that we're used to seeing with the characters. There's Netflix's Daredevil, where we've see Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) in a simple, black costume. Then there's Fox's Fantastic Four, where the characters have so far been seen in functional, flexible suits. The link between the two is that neither project features the primary costumes we know from the comic books: the red Daredevil suit and the brighter blue Fantastic Four outfits with a big "4" on the chest.

Well, according to people involved with both projects, all those costumes will be in their respective projects. And while the Daredevil suit isn't that surprising, the Fantastic Four one is. Let's start with Fantastic Four. Mr. Fantastic himself, Miles Teller, was speaking to Screen Crush and they asked him about the photos you've seen, like the one above. Here's what he said about that:

These are the beta versions of the costumes, which is great [...] But, yeah it would be very odd if the Fantastic Four didn't don the traditional costumes. You've got to. There is some servicing there. You've got to give that to the fans. That's what it's all about.

Well that's kind of revealing. Several shots in the trailer definitely made it look like these suits were the only ones. But it kind of makes sense Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman will look like their comic book selves at one point, as Thing and Human Torch obviously don't need costumes to do that.

Onto Daredevil, the Twitter account revealed this new motion video:

That black suit is how Matt Murdock starts the show and we all assumed he'd get to the red one eventually. Now, showrunner Steven DeKnight talks more about that:

He always wore a black mask that was tied in the back. We went through a lot of different versions and did a lot of R&D before settling on something. If you watch very closely, you'll see the outfit evolve subtly into what we call the black ninja suit. The mask changes. He starts wearing protective pads. Eventually it morphs into the classic suit, because he wouldn't be Daredevil without it. Getting there is part of the fun.

The idea was to back the story up to the point before Matt is Daredevil. Then we could take him to a place where some version of the red suit works in a grounded world. The solution is very exciting and makes complete sense.
