Star Wars D23
The program teased it. We all expected it. But as the smoke cleared on the 2013 D23 Expo, there was not a single shred of Star Wars Episode VII news. Its absence left fans questioning not only Disney’s motives in using their new acquisition, Lucasfilm, to sell the event but also asking what the state of Star Wars Episode VII actually is.

The consensus seems to be director J.J. Abrams, executive producer and Lucasfilm CEO Kathleen Kennedy, screenwriter Michael Arndt and producers Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are simply not ready to reveal anything about Star Wars Episode VII. What’s troubling though is Disney did reveal images, concept art and more for films that’ll be out after well Episode VII. Plus, with the D23 Expo only happening every other year, the film will be out months before the next Expo. Those factors meant major disappoint for fans both at the convention and beyond.

So what does that all mean? Are Abrams and crew simply too busy to worry about marketing a film that hasn’t begun production yet, or are things not progressing in the manner everyone expected? Read More »

Something weird header

A few days before D23 kicked off this past weekend, Marvel and Disney hinted at the announcement of a new mystery project. Attendees were urged to “ask for something WEIRD” at the Walt Disney Parks & Resorts Pavilion, which launched a whole bunch of theorizing about what that something might be.

Now that the expo’s come and gone… well, we still don’t know that much more about the secretive endeavor, actually. Apparently, Disney prefers to take its sweet time doling out the details on this one. But we do have confirmation that it’s a comic book, and we have a first peek at some artwork for it. Hit the jump to check it out.

Hiddleston Hopkins D23

The D23 Expo has come and gone but the content just keeps on flowing. Marvel has posted videos of their presentations from the Live Action event, featuring cast members from Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, as well as some discussion of Guardians of the Galaxy.

Unfortunately for people who weren’t in the room, the actual footage from the movies isn’t included. But you can get a good sense of how Marvel is selling their upcoming films to the Disney audience, and see stars like Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Chris Evans and Anthony Mackie along the way. You may remember Academy Award and Emmy nominated director Leslie Iwerks from her fantastic documentaries on cinema: A Pixar Story and Industrial Light & Magic: Creating the Impossible. If you haven’t seen them, stop reading this and go find them. She’s also from a family of multi-generational Disney legends — the daughter of Disney Legend Don Iwerks and granddaughter of Ub Iwerks, the animator and co-creator of Mickey Mouse and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. At D23 Expo, it was announced that Iwerks’ next documentary, coming in 2016, will focus on Walt Disney Imagineering — the company responsible for developing and designing all the magic in the Disney theme parks, ships and resorts worldwide. The teaser trailer is online and available to watch after the jump.

Tom Hiddleston at D23

Tom Hiddleston sure knows how to work a crowd. Although his entrance at D23 wasn’t quite as dramatic as his big Loki monologue from Comic-Con, what it lacked in menacing villainy, it more than made up for in adorable musicality.

The Brit actor was at the event to promote The Pirate Fairy, Disney’s new animated musical about a badass fairy and a young Captain Hook. Christina Hendricks voices the former, while Hiddleston voices the latter.

It’s unclear whether they’ll provide the characters’ singing voices as well as their speaking ones, but either way Hiddleston seemed more than happy to show off his pipes — and his lingering affection for Disney’s The Jungle Book. He serenaded the audience with Baloo’s signature tune “The Bare Necessities,” as his co-star Hendricks gamely danced along. Watch the video clip after the jump.

This weekend at D23 Expo, director Brad Bird and writer Damon Lindelof finally gave the world a glimpse into the mystery box of their new film Tomorrowland. On stage, they literally unboxed the mystery, a 1952 box found inside the basement of the old animation building at Walt Disney Studio. The box and the contents serve as the inspiration for the new film. We wrote about the presentation here, but thats not the end of it. As the presentation came to a close, Bird and Lindelof announced that we’d all be able to get an up close look at the contents of the box at a newly constructed/unveiled booth on the show floor.

We spent two hours waiting to tour the booth with plans to give you guys a virtual look with a photo gallery — but Disney security was out in full force and not allowing ANYONE to take ANY photos. So after the jump, we do have something, information we learned about the contents of the box from the booth, including select transcripts of the audio tour from the booth. We have also included some images from the presentation released by Disney ad closeups of the box’s contents from Bird and Lindelof’s earlier tweeted photos.
