Captain America Movie Without Steve Rogers

Marvel Studios has helped make lots of comic book characters even more popular than they ever were before hitting the big screen. That means plenty of people are aware that Captain America is a mantle that hasn’t always been taken up by Steve Rogers. There have been a variety of storylines that have seen Steve Rogers taken out of the equation, opening the door for either Sam Wilson (aka Falcon) or Bucky Barnes (aka the Winter Soldier) to become Captain America. But is that something that can happen in the movies?

Many fans have started to speculate that Captain America will be one of the superheroes that finally bites the dust when Avengers: Infinity War or Avengers 4, taking Chris Evans out of the red, white and blue, and allowing Anthony Mackie or Sebastian Stan to pick up the shield. Now Kevin Feige has confirmed that it’s possible, at least in theory.

Kevin Feige recently sat down for an interview with Collider, and he was directly asked whether a Captain America movie actually has to star Steve Rogers? Here’s what the Marvel boss had to say:

It’s a good question and if we look back at the comic books as our inspiration and as the well from which this all springs, then the answer is no.’

However, Feige was quick to clarify that this was not him confirming that we’ll definitely see this happen in the Marvel cinematic universe:

I’m not saying we’ll do it in the movie but I’ve read Captain America comics that don’t have Steve Rogers in them.

Of course Kevin Feige has to play it safe when he answers this question, because if he didn’t add that second sentence, sites like ours would all be writing about how Feige said we’ll definitely see a Captain America movie without Steve Rogers. That would spoil any future plans Marvel might have for Captain America, but it could also make watching him as a hero a little more interesting.

Up until now, there have been no major superheroes that we’ve spent multiple films with who have died. We all know that the stars of these movies have multiple film contracts, and Marvel isn’t just going to kill these heroes nonchalantly. If Feige did confirm that we’ll see Bucky Barnes or Sam Wilson take on the mantle of Captain America, that might give fans some suspense as to when he’s going to be taken out. Despite the ending of Captain America: Civil War, we know Rogers can never really walk away from being a hero, so the only way he won’t be Captain America anymore is if he’s killed.

But then again, if fans are already assuming that Captain America is going to bite the big one in one of the two upcoming Avengers sequels, then Feige really has no need to confirm one of the other characters taking his job. The question is if Captain America does indeed get taken out in a future movie, will he be the only one?

Would you watch a Captain America movie without Chris Evans?
