Transformers: The Last Knight Poster - Bumblebee WWII Mode

Yesterday, a new Transformers: The Last Knight TV spot revealed the Autobots’ secret history of fighting the Nazi’s during World War II. With 14 Transformers movies in development, it seems like the plan is to intertwine their story with that of the human race. Michael Bay’s new film explores how the King Arthur story combines with the Transformers mythology, and the full movie seems delve further into faux WWII history, a plot point that was criticized during production.

Now, a new Transformers: The Last Knight poster reveals Bumblebee’s WWII mode.

The Transformers marketing teases that “They’re never a part of the history books, but they’ve definitely made history…”

With Bumblebee helping in the epic fight against Nazis and Hitler during World War II, it would appear he’s been part of Earth’s history for a much longer time than we have suspected. This may give us some insight into how his spin-off will work.

The new images give us a glimpse at how the Transformers may have been involved in some of mankind’s biggest events. Megatron seems to be the culprit behind the Krakatoa explosion, Hound inspired the invention of automatic weapons and helped George Washington fight the British,  Ironhide appears to be supporting troops during World War I , and of course, the Autobots fought along the Samurai. This is a little confusing, as the first Transformers movie seemed to indicate that this was the first time these particular robots were on Earth.

Transformers: The Last Knight looks like a real mess to me. Michael Bay has said that the film is a combination of two ideas that he and producer Steven Spielberg liked from the 15 or so ideas that the Transformers brain trust came up with for future movie projects. I’m interested in the mythology component of this, which involves King Arthur and this alternate history. The other part appears to be an almost Terminator-style post-apocalyptic story with Mark Wahlberg’s Cade Yeager protecting a young girl. As I’ve stated before, that story seems a lot less attractive to me.

Transformers: The Last Knight is directed by Michael Bay and stars Mark Wahlberg, Josh Duhamel, Anthony Hopkins, Laura Haddock, Jerrod Carmichael, Isabela Moner and Santiago Cabrera. The official plot synopsis follows:

The Last Knight shatters the core myths of the Transformers franchise, and redefines what it means to be a hero. Humans and Transformers are at war, Optimus Prime is gone. The key to saving our future lies buried in the secrets of the past, in the hidden history of Transformers on Earth.  Saving our world falls upon the shoulders of an unlikely alliance: Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg); Bumblebee; an English Lord (Sir Anthony Hopkins); and an Oxford Professor (Laura Haddock).   There comes a moment in everyone’s life when we are called upon to make a difference.  In Transformers: The Last Knight, the hunted will become heroes.  Heroes will become villains.  Only one world will survive: theirs, or ours.

Transformers: The Last Knight hits theaters on June 21, 2017.
