Today Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters, leaving you to see the divisive comic book flick for yourself and see what you think of Zack Snyder‘s attempt at bringing the greatest gladiator match in the history of the world to the big screen. But if you don’t have tickets yet, or you’re waiting until the hype dies down a bit, then we have a battle between the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight that you can check out right now.
In honor of the fight between the Son of Krypton and the Bat of Gotham, Honest Trailers has delivered their takes on Tim Burton‘s Batman from 1989 and Richard Donner‘s Superman from 1978, both being the first feature length big screen iterations of their respective comic book characters. Watch the Batman and Superman Honest Trailers below.
Here are the head-to-head Honest Trailers for Batman and Superman from Screen Junkies:
It’s funny to look back at 1978’s Superman and see that Christopher Reeve didn’t even get top billing in the movie in which he plays the title character. But that’s what happens when Superman is your breakthrough role and you also have Gene Hackman and Marlon Brando in the movie. Superman is undoubtedly dated and campy now, but you have to give credit where it’s due. The movie that proved comic books could be viable big screen attractions.
Meanwhile, over in Gotham City, Tim Burton was tasked with making people see Batman as something other than the campy, jokey superhero that everyone knew from the 1960s. And he did that by going in the complete opposite direction, delivering a dark, gritty superhero that audiences hadn’t yet seen on the big screen. In retrospect, compared to darker modern superhero movies, Batman certainly has some campy elements of its own, but it’s also a comic book movie that deserves a lot of kudos for paving the way for the kind of comic book movies we have today.
