Avengers Age of Ultron Trailer Analysis

Note: This Avengers Age of Ultron trailer analysis only includes screenshots and scenes not shown in the past Avengers trailers.

ZZ6447800E

Ultron appears to have made a base for himself that would be at home in a WWII "men on a mission" movie.

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Complete with throne. Maybe he's been reading all those Thanos comics?

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) look upon their leader and seem to wonder what they're doing siding with this metal psychopath.

Avengers: Age of Ultron

If you're going to issue commands from a throne in an otherwise-empty room, it's good to have some dramatic camera angles to shore up your sense of majesty and mystique. (Fox, don't sue us for saying "mystique" in a Marvel article.)

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Is this anyone important or just a girl looking up at the Quinjet in amazement?

Some fans have suggested it might be Ashley Johnson who played a small role as the New York City waitress Beth who is saved by Captain America in The Avengers (a whole sequence with the character didn't make the final cut), but it doesnt look to be the same actress. Another reader caught the girl and boy in the first Avengers: Age of Ultron teaser trailer:

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Ultron disconnects himself from...

Avengers: Age of Ultron

...a cable of some sort. A power supply? A tether to JARVIS? Or something else?

Avengers: Age of Ultron

"There's only one path to peace," says Ultron. "Their extinction." Which makes it sound like Ultron thinks that the damage done by the Avengers in their quest to do good may be what Ultron sees as an impediment to his vision of peace.

animation

And here's his version of "peace."

Avengers Tower - Avengers: Age of Ultron

Avengers Tower in New York City, formerly Stark Tower before the battle of New York (as seen in The Avengers).

Avengers: Age of Ultron

A lab in Avengers Tower where robotic arms are doing something with destroyed pieces which appear to be from Tony's Iron Man suit.

Robert Downey Jr in Avengers: Age of Ultron

Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) says "I tried to create a suit of armor around the world, but I created something terrible." An orange-colored holographic is being projected but is obscured by Tony — what might it be?

Mark Ruffalo in Avengers: Age of Ultron

Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) quickly and rightfully guesses "Artificial intelligence" as Stark's new invention, and the Avengers' new problem.

Robert Downey Jr and Mark Ruffalo in Avengers: Age of Ultron

In another scene (notice the change of clothes), Tony tells Banner about the Ultron program.

Thor in Avengers: Age of Ultron

Thor (Chris Hemsworth) gets blown back by an explosion as the Ultrons destroy the city.

Chris Evans in Avengers: Age of Ultron

Captain America (Chris Evans) runs through the destruction to help save the people in the red car on the right of the above screenshot, before it falls off the destroyed bridge.

Chris Evans in Avengers: Age of Ultron

Captain America isn't able to save the day. The bumper tears off the back of the car as it plunges over the cliff.

animation (1)

We see the cars plunge off the bridge — a powerful image of failure.

Chris Evans in Avengers: Age of Ultron

Captain America back on the farm talking to Tony.

Robert Downey Jr in Avengers: Age of Ultron

"Isn't why we fight so we can end the fight and go home?"

Mark Ruffalo and Scarlett Johansson in Avengers: Age of Ultron

Bruce Banner talks to Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) in what appears to be her apartment (notice her bath robe).

Update: Samantha from twitter thinks its  corrected me and say this is Hawkeye's farm and not Black Widow's apartment:

While Matt in the comments says:

The black widow and hulk one looks like they are at a random house. Why would either have kid stuff? The razor would imply it isn't Widow's house. They are probably hiding.

Good points.

Mark Ruffalo and Scarlett Johansson in Avengers: Age of Ultron

They get really close, more evidence of romantic tension between Bruce Banner and Black Widow.

Robert Downey Jr in Avengers: Age of Ultron

We cut to Tony in a dark house or apartment (maybe the same one seen previously), its possible this is Widow's apartment from the previous edit. If it is, its now night time.

Scarlett Johansson in Avengers: Age of Ultron

Black Widow whips her hair around to tell Tony that he spectacularly failed.

Chris Evans in Avengers: Age of Ultron

Captain America is not amused.

Age-of-Ultron-t3-1

So who is using these expandable claws? Could they be the property of Ulysses Klaw, the character played by Andy Serkis? Or is that too easy?

Chance Shafor in the comments has a better explanation:

They're not expandable claws, they're arrows. They look like arrows, there's a bow at the bottom of the shot, the character in the shot has Hawkeye's outfit, and the very next scene is Hawkeye bursting out of this "container" (weapon's cache?) to kick some ass.

Age-of-Ultron-t3-2

As hero shots go...

Age-of-Ultron-t3-3

... this one is pretty hard to beat.

Age-of-Ultron-t3-4

Cap surveys some sort of base — is that the new home of S.H.I.E.L.D., or whatever is taking its place?

Age-of-Ultron-t3-5

Hulkin' out.

Age-of-Ultron-t3-6

Tony Stark plays with Loki's staff, which we know has a significant part to play in this story.

Age-of-Ultron-t3-7

We don't see an awful lot of Hawkeye, so it's good to give him a hero shot once in a while.

Age-of-Ultron-t3-8

Banner really looks out of place here — he's even divided from everyone else by a beam.

Age-of-Ultron-t3-9

Iron Man lands in what could be an early face-off against Ultron.

Age-of-Ultron-t3-10

Yeah, this isn't going to be just a chit-chat session.

Age-of-Ultron-t3-11

Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) is really good at looking disappointed in everyone.

Age-of-Ultron-t3-12

Like we said, that 3-on-3 face-off above was bound to erupt into violence. This fight is also seen excerpted in the last trailer. (The shot of Iron Man being smashed into metal door is almost certainly from this fight.)

Age-of-Ultron-t3-13

Hanging out on Avengers Tower, because they can. And Banner is still looking really uncomfortable.

Age-of-Ultron-t3-14

Don't give me that look, Rogers.

Age-of-Ultron-t3-16Age-of-Ultron-t3-17

It's wonderful how Ultron's expression goes from surprise to total fury in the course of one frame.

Age-of-Ultron-t3-18

But you'd be pissed, too, if Cap's shield was stuck in your chest.

Age-of-Ultron-t3-19

OK, here's the big question for this trailer: what's in the back of, er, the trailer? Something is standing in there. Is that an early version of Vision? Or something else? Enlarging does little good, and just makes the person/object more difficult to identify.

ZZ1D2744B7

But here's the zoomed-in view, anyway.

Age-of-Ultron-t3-20

Black Widow with the shield save. Hey, is that a metaphor?

Age-of-Ultron-t3-21

That's just a great shot.

Age-of-Ultron-t3-22

There's that "what are we doing with this guy?" look again, or is it just simple subservience? Regardless, this is how you look when the robot you're working with says "we can tear them apart."

Age-of-Ultron-t3-23

Some good new Hulkbuster v Hulk action. Sorry about your building.

But this is also seen under the second half of Ultron's comment about tearing the Avengers apart, "from the inside." So hero-on-hero battles will be manufactured by Ultron, which confirms some story we've known for a while.

Age-of-Ultron-t3-24

How do they get inside? Well. We've seen hints of Scarlet Witch using her powers in past trailers and images, but this is one of our first real looks at a very direct application. We know that we'll see some of the Avengers in nightmare states induced by SW, and the "young Black Widow" shots seen in the last trailer could be the aftermath of this moment here.

Age-of-Ultron-t3-25

Quicksilver punches Cap right in the face. Whether this comes at a point when he's been working with the Avengers is another question.

Age-of-Ultron-t3-26

This also comes right after the "from the inside" half of Ultron's dire threat, which suggests, at least, that at least some of the inter-team conflict will be the fault of he and the Witch. But probably not all. This may just be Thor reacting to the news that Stark has created a nearly unbeatable foe.

Age-of-Ultron-t3-27

Just to lock in Witch's importance to this plan, here's her anti-hero shot.

Age-of-Ultron-t3-28

Cap gets creamed as this car fully rolls over and skids a split-second after this frame — we'll see how that works out for him.

/Film reader Oudom Seng noted how Captain America has been inserted into this shot which originally presented in Trailer #2 as part of the Hulk vs. Iron Man fight:

Age-of-Ultron-t3-29

Back to stand-off in the industrial location.

Age-of-Ultron-t3-30

Is this the final battle? Probably not, based on what we've heard. Still, Thor thinks he's got it all in hand. "Is that the best you can do?!" he yells.

Age-of-Ultron-t3-31

James Spader's smug Ultron chuckle is marvelous.

Age-of-Ultron-t3-32

As he waves in his real army.

Age-of-Ultron-t3-33

Don't look at me like that, either, Rogers.

Age-of-Ultron-t3-34

The Widow's sting, refined.

Age-of-Ultron-t3-35

Scarlet Witch seems to have turned to work with the Avengers at this point, or is this just part of Ultron's gambit?

Age-of-Ultron-t3-36Age-of-Ultron-t3-37

We love seeing the big green guy in action.

Age-of-Ultron-t3-38

Vision! This is the first finished, moving footage we've seen of Paul Bettany's new character.

Age-of-Ultron-t3-39

Just to make clear that he's not human, we see those mechanical eyes dilating.
