‘Sucker Punch’ – What Did You Think?

Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch hits theaters this weekend, and it’s already spawned some amount of controversy online. Fans of Snyder will most likely not be disappointed, as the film has insane amounts of over-the-top action scenes featuring excellent staging and astonishing visuals. But is its depiction of scantily-clad women kicking other-wordly ass an empowering one? Or is it a demeaning one? Does the film adequately cohere, or is it merely, as Richard Corliss called it, “an arrested adolescent’s Google search run amok”? Is Sucker Punch a “two-hour $82 million fetish film examining how hot sad schoolgirls look when holding weapons,” as Dodai Stewart claims it is? Or does it accomplish something more deep and profound?

Share your thoughts in the comments. Assume spoilers follow after the jump.

Ever since I started working on the /Filmcast, there have been two people I’ve always wanted to get onto the show that I haven’t been able to. Today, I cross one of those two names off my list (As for the other one, hopefully one day I can still get Heather Havrilesky to notice me…).

Shawn Ryan is one of the most exciting people working in the entertainment industry today. With an ear for crackling dialogue and a penchant for labyrinthine, satisfying plots, Ryan re-invigorates any genre he touches. He created the hit FX show The Shield, and was the showrunner on Lie To Me, Terriers, and The Unit. His newest show, The Chicago Code, airs on Fox on Monday nights and it’s one of my favorite new shows of 2011. In addition to watching it on TV, you can also see The Chicago Code on Hulu, Amazon, or iTunes. It’s well-worth your time to catch up now!

After the jump, read a full transcript (edited for clarity) of my 40-minute conversation with Shawn Ryan. It’s rare, in-depth look into what it’s like to create and manage a big-budget broadcast TV show and I’d urge you to give it a look. You can also download the audio from the interview through the /Filmcast.

One of the most impressive elements about Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan is Natalie Portman’s Oscar-winning performance. Not only does Portman grippingly capture the mental disintegration of her character, she also trained for months to be able to convincingly take on the role of a star ballerina. A body double for Portman was used for some scenes, but in a recent LA Times piece, Black Swan choreographer and future Portman husband Benjamin Millepied responded to the body double scuttlebutt by claiming that “85% of that movie is Natalie.”

Portman’s body double, Sarah Lane, has now publicly refuted those claims, saying that Portman’s work only accounts for 5 percent of what you see in the full-body dance scenes in Black Swan.

/Film Boston: IFFBoston Announces Lineup

The Independent Film Festival of Boston recently released their full line-up and it’s a doozy. Sundance favorites such as The Future and Submarine will be there, along with awesome documentaries like Being Elmo (WITH ELMO IN ATTENDANCE!!!) and Page One: A Year Inside the New York Times. I’m looking forward to films I wasn’t able to catch at Sundance and SXSW, such as the legal documentary Hot Coffee, the heartbreaking How to Die in Oregon, and the new fascinating Conan O’Brien film. Takashi Miike’s 13 Assassins also looks like it will rock the house.

The full line-up is below. The festival is April 27th through May 4th, and it’s one of my favorite movie events of the year. If you live anywhere in New England, I invite you to come and check it out. You can follow IFFBoston on Facebook for updates or buy your passes now!

Spring is a great time for movie lovers who live in New England. Not only does old man winter seem finally on the cusp of relinquishing his cold, hard death grip on the region, but there are a couple of interesting film festivals taking place. For example, The Boston Underground Film Festival begins tonight, and brings with it some awesome screenings, Q&As, and events. Hit the jump for the full schedule. Read More »

In preparation for the release of Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch, which hits theaters tomorrow, Warner Brothers has released several videos that fill in some of the “back story” from the film. I say “back story” in quotes because without giving too much away, much of the film takes place in imagined worlds. These short films help to supplement the movie’s world-building efforts in a really stylish and effective (if not a bit over-the-top) way.

Hit the jump to see the short films, and feel free to leave your comments on them below.
