Question: Which Videogames Are The Most Cinematic?

heavyrain

If you’ve been following coverage from last week’s Electronics Entertainment Expo, you’ll know that a bunch of impressive footage debuted there. One of the most anticipated games of recent memory is Heavy Rain, which is being developed for the Playstation 3 by Quantic Dream (screenshot above). Heavy Rain has been in development since 2006 and has been the subject of much hype by its developers, who at one point claimed that the game would successfully cross the uncanny valley.

On this past week’s Totally Rad Show E3 wrap up (which I highly recommend for anyone with even a passing interest in videogames), Jeff Cannata and Dan Trachtenberg were quite complimentary about what they saw of the game, calling it the equivalent of “playing a cinematic experience”:

Comedy Central Orders 26 New Episodes of Futurama

futurama

In yesterday’s Page 2, we referred to a rumor from Collider that Comedy Central had ordered 13 new episodes of the animated series Futurama. Today, we’re hearing from a variety of sources that Futurama is not only back, but that Comedy Central has ordered 26 new episodes. The episodes are scheduled to begin airing in mid-2010.

This is not the first time such a revival has taken place, as many of you will probably remember Family Guy’s resurrection after monstrously strong DVD sales. According to 20th Century Fox TV Chairmen Gary Newman and Dana Walden:

When we brought back Family Guy several years ago, everyone said that it was a once in a lifetime thing — that canceled series stay canceled and cannot be revived. But Futurama was another series that fans simply demanded we bring back, and we couldn’t have been happier when Matt and David agreed that there were many more stories yet to tell.

The /Filmcast: After Dark is a recording of what happens right after The /Filmcast is over, when the kids have gone to bed and the guys feel free to speak whatever is on their minds. In other words, it’s the leftover and disorganized ramblings, mindfarts, and brain diarrhea from The /Filmcast, all in one convenient audio file. In this episode, Dave Chen, Devindra Hardawar and Adam Quigley reminisce about some of their favorite DVD deals, try to grasp the awesomeness of the new Bad Lieutenant trailer, and read off some amazing entries from the Benjamin Button contest (Winners: Michael Faith and Joey Kee). Special guest C. Robert Cargill (AKA Massawyrm) joins us from Aint it Cool News.

Actor David Carradine Found Dead

carradine21

According to multiple news sources, actor David Carradine has been found dead in a hotel room in Bangkok. Carradine’s personal manager says the death is being investigated, but provided no other details. Carradine was apparently in the process of filming his latest film, Stretch. This article from the BBC purports to have more details regarding the circumstances of his death.

The son of John Carradine, David Carradine is probably best known in the U.S. for his role as Kwai Chang Cane in the television show Kung Fu, although more recently, he starred as the character of Bill in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill films. He also appeared briefly in Death Race, as well as in Crank: High Voltage as the sinister Poon Dong. Carradine’s voluminous filmography boasts his participation in more than 200 films, TV shows, and TV movies, and he has worked with some of the best directors in the industry, including Martin Scorsese and Ingmar Bergman.

Movie Review: Up - The Greatest Adventure

up

[This review contains plot details revealed in the first 10 minutes of Pixar's Up]

Pixar’s movies have always depicted fantastical worlds spun out of reams of boundless creativity. A rat who dreamed of becoming a chef, and who lived out that dream through controlling a guy by pulling on his hair. An epic battle between ants and grasshoppers. A city full of monsters, powered by the screams of children. A family of superheroes that try to defeat a spurned ex-devotee.

It’s in the context of these wondrous films that Up emerges as Pixar’s entry for summer 2009. Directed by Pete Docter (Monsters Inc.), Up is Pixar’s most ambitious effort yet. Pixar films have always expertly been able to imbue fantasy with real-world emotions, but with Up, Docter tries to create a world that is both distinctively ours, yet also a universe of its own. How well does he succeed?

Marketing Up’s Asian-American Lead Character

russell-pixar

As an Asian-American, I have occasionally lamented the status (or lack thereof) of Asian-Americans in American cinema. Often, Asian-Americans actors are relegated to secondary characters, or worse, see roles ostensibly intended for them being whitewashed when they hit the big screen. That’s why I was surprised to learn that this summer, Disney/Pixar is releasing a film with an Asian-American as one of its lead characters. Even more surprising was that it was a character in a film I had already seen: Russell, the child Wilderness Explorer in Disney/Pixar’s newest film Up.

benjamin-button-criterionI can scarcely believe that it’s been almost one year since we first launched the /Film movie podcast, the /Filmcast. Many actors, filmmakers, and bloggers have made their way through our podcast doors and it’s been a blast to chat with all of them about movies and movie news. To celebrate, we’ve been giving away a bunch of cool stuff and announcing winners during our show, which airs on Monday nights at 9 PM EST / 6 PM PST at Slashfilm’s live page.

This week we’ll be giving away two copies of the Criterion DVD of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Those of you familiar with Criterion DVDs know that they’re always jampacked with high-quality extras and this DVD is no exception. Regardless of whether or not you liked the film, the DVD offers a fascinating look into Button’s creative process and its spectacular visual effects.

In keeping with the shamelessly masturbatory spirit of celebrating a show’s one-year anniversary, here are the instructions to enter the contest:

1) Simply answer one of the two following questions:

a) What is your favorite moment/memory from the /Filmcast this past year? OR…

b) What is your favorite moment/memory from your life this past year, that you had while listening to the /Filmcast?

2) E-mail slashfilmcast(AT)gmail(DOT)com with your answers. Having an answer longer than one or two sentences will increase your chances of winning. Put the phrase “Button Contest” in your subject line and include your mailing address.

3) Please note that unless you say otherwise, I will assume your stories are free to share on the air, on /Film, or elsewhere. I will probably write a separate post compiling some of the best answers, but I will only use your initials to identify where each story came from.

That’s it! Winners will be chosen through some hybridized selection process incorporating randomness, weighted averages, the quality/humor/earnestness of the answers, etc., and will be announced live on the air on Monday night at 9 PM EST / 6 PM PST when we broadcast the /Filmcast live.

As always, feel free to subscribe to the /Film movie podcast using the following links:
