‘Alien’-Inspired Giger Bar May Come to U.S.

Giger Bar

The Alien movies are creepy and terrifying, and no sane person would actually want to live through (or, as often as not, die from) the characters’ terrifying ordeals. But the characters designed by H.R. Giger are fascinating ones, and it’s tough to imagine any sci-fi fan not wanting to get a closer look. If cocktails are also involved, all the better.

The creature designer has already opened up two bars based on his creations, both in Switzerland, and according to a new report may now open a third in the U.S. as part of the Sci-Fi Hotel. Details like “when” and “where” are still being worked out, but it’ll be an “immersive” experience like the other ones. Hit the jump for more details.

CNet reports that Sci-Fi Hotel founder Andy Davies is working with Giger on the new bar. Davies describes his hotel as “an architectural and stylistic celebration of science fiction, a creative and technological showcase that features classic, retro, and futuristic science-fiction interior design, art, books, and movies in guestrooms and public spaces for a completely ‘immersive’ experience.”

Given that description, the Giger Bar should fit right into Davies’ vision. As for what exactly he has in mind for the new Giger Bar, Davies said:

What I envision for the US bar is taking the key elements of Giger Bar Gruyeres, the biomechanical ceiling arches, and reforming them to fit a space here. Matching those design elements with the same style of furniture, the bar — well, pretty much replicating the whole thing. The important thing for me is total authenticity. I want Giger and his team to be totally involved. This will be a Giger work of art, not just a copy, but the real thing. That’s really important to H.R. Giger and to me.

The Sci-Fi Hotel’s bar is not Giger’s first foray into American nightlife. At one point, there was a Giger-designed VIP lounge at the Limelight in New York Ciy. However, the room shut down when the club did. Giger also had a bar in Tokyo that has since closed. Currently, the only two Giger bars in the world are in Gruyeres and Chur.

The existing Giger bars feature “a comprehensive ‘Alien’ biomechanical environment,” as CNet puts it, with floors, ceilings, funiture and more all designed by Giger. (The photo above, of one of the Swiss bars, should give you an idea of what exactly that means.) Davies says Giger will be involved in the process of designing the bar, and will sign off on its completion.

Where this magical hotel bar will be located is unclear, however, as Davies is still weighing his options. “Right now it’s Seattle and New York, with San Francisco, New Orleans, and Chicago following closely behind,” he said. “But I also see a fit in the middle of the New Mexico desert at Spaceport USA. If you’re gonna build a spaceport-looking hotel, might as well build it at a spaceport, right?” If all goes well, Davies hopes to announce a location sometime in early 2014.
