Golden Trailer Awards

Last night, the 19th annual Golden Trailer Awards were held at the Ace Hotel in downtown Los Angeles, celebrating the best movie marketing of the year. And while Wonder Woman reigned supreme at last year’s ceremony, a trailer for Disney and Marvel Studios’ Black Panther ended up taking home the top prize last night. Watch the winning trailer and get the full list of winners below.

Golden Trailer Awards Winners

Here’s “Crown,” the Black Panther trailer that ended up winning it all at this year’s Golden Trailer Awards:

Black Panther was the top Golden Trailer Award winner of the evening, serving as the subject of trailers that topped categories like “Best in Show,” “Best Action,” “Best Action TV Spot,” and “Best Music TV Spot.” A trailer editing company called Create was the actual recipient of the night’s main prize. On the TV side of things, Stranger Things and Westworld were both the subject of three winning categories for their season 2 advertising campaigns. Netflix, Fox (with Fox Searchlight and FX), and Warner Bros (with HBO and New Line Cinema) were also big winners of the night, taking home 13 Golden Trailer Awards each.

Michelle Buteau (Late Night Whenever Podcast, Always Be My Maybe, The Tick) hosted the awards show. I actually attended the show last year in person, and you can read my dispatch from inside that ceremony right here. Being in the room firsthand taught me which categories to look out for, like the Golden Fleece Award, which is given to a trailer that makes a garbage movie look much better than it really is. This year’s winner in that category was for the Jason Statham-led shark attack movie The Meg, which makes me slightly worried about whether that film will turn out to be any good.

This reminds me: if you missed my report on why you sometimes see quick five-second trailers play before the full trailer online, be sure to check that out here – that practice is still going strong in Hollywood.
