Teaser Trailer: Beauty and the Beast in 3D

It has been almost two years since Walt Disney Animation Studios announced that they would be converting Beauty and the Beast into 3D for a Valentine’s Day 2010 theatrical rerelease. Disney has been showing a short test of the 3D footage at various industry events, including last year’s ShoWest. Unlike the live-action 3D post conversions, I was actually quite impressed with what Disney was able to achieve with the added dimensionality (read my previous report here). Earlier this year, Disney pushed the releease back to a To Be Announced 2011 date, and it was later revealed that they were so happy with how Beauty 3D turned out, that they were also in the process of converting The Lion King to 3D as well.

We still don’t know when the 3D version will hit theaters, but many assume it’s February 14th 2011, as Disney wanted to target Valentine’s Day in it’s previous release plans. But a one minute teaser trailer has been found online, and can now be watched embedded after the jump. According to the trailer, it will get a very limited release in New Zealand on August 12th 2010.

The film’s original producers Don Hahn and directors Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale used the film’s original computer files to re-render the film in 3D, a process that took an estimated 10 months. “By going back to the original animation files, which have been carefully archived for 17 years, and using the separate background, effects and character animation elements, we’re able to come up with a fun and unique 3-D experience for existing and new fans of the film,” Producer Don Hahn has said.

Thanks to Stitch Kingdom for the heads up on the trailer.

I'm all for it, but did they have to use Celine Dion and Peabo whatevertheHellhis last name is for the trailer?

Would rather see this AND Lion King both released in IMAX 3d

/Film... where all the 3D haters live...
An example of how 3D can be used to great (and subtle) effect.
The opening scene in Toy Story 3, they're heading toward the wooden bridge that crosses the canyon... the added dimension you get from 3D allows you to feel the distance and depth of that canyon. Without 3D, for me that scene would have been less. 3D should be used to enhance/add more to the art of cinema, and it can do so very well. It's not just a 'gimmick'.

    Anyway, back OT.

If Disney can do this properly I'm all for it. As someone else say, bring on Fantasia.
  • Die 3D, die!
  • 90s music ruins all.

Come celebrate bestiality in 3D! No thanks. I'll take my hard earned $20 and spend it on a "real" Tijuana Donkey Show ;)
  • You'll get two shows for that $20

Its kind of funny that they used probably the most CG part of the film to give away their 3D launch. It'll be interesting to see other scenes rendered but that one doesn't have a tremendous impact for me.

3D is really lame when used as a gimmick like this, but there are so many movies that i may now get a chance to see on a big screen that i otherwise never would've seen (such as this), so i guess i'm not complaining about the fad.
  • I'd rather see Aladdin in 3D. Seems like it lends itself to the format better

I don't think Aladdin's desert setting would allow for a good 3D conversion. I think The Little Mermaid would work because of how bright and colorful the setting is.

    God I hate that song.

Still, I am interested to see how it looks. Such a strange idea.

Why wont 3D go away :(.

Greatest Disney animated film ever. I'll happily pay to see it in theaters again

Cans I Has Fantasia3D Pleeeze? OK, enough Cheesburger talk. Why do I (& other NZ'ers) get the dubious honour of seeing this in special release? I will be washing my hair that week for sure. But if they are going for the moolah, hopefully we will see other classics eventually. Dumbo anyone?
  • I'm mildly curious about the 3-D version of that one shot in the song "Gaston" that accompanies the line "and every last inch of me's covered with hair."
  • CheshireAna
    ... I think I just threw up a little.
  • Im all for it, i'd love to see these films on the big screen.

Haha, this trailer is completely useless on 2D YouTube.

I think that even though it is a conversion, it is a very unique way of conversion. They went back to the original backgrounds and animation cells, and they spent like 5 times as much time on this than Clash of the Titans. I don't think Disney should do this with EVERY 2D film they have(including future 2D animated films), but Beauty and the Beast along with The Lion King are classics.

    Trailer needs more Gaston.
  • GastonFan2
Indeed, Gaston in 3D! Who needs Scott Pilgrim when you have Gaston in 3D!
  • jthusky23
    That trailer's really, REALLY low-tech, even for a re-release.

And also, Belle was a furry.
  • Grimztone
Well my 8 year old would love to see that on the big screen.
  • booyamachine
    SHHHHHHHHHH!!! Nobody tell my wife!
  • They are REALLY trying to convince us that 3D is the next "big thing".. personally it still feels like a gimmick.
  • mack41
Maybe, but I was born the year this came out and never got to see it in theaters. They could release it in smellovision in ten years and I'd go see it just to be in a theater. Same goes for Terminator 2 and Point Break
  • MONEY MONEY MONEY NOM NOM NOM
  • Psh
    That trailer screams fake
  • On a 2D screen, that's exactly how it looked back in 1991. If you recall, they used a lot of CGI for backgrounds and such.
  • watching a trailer for a 3d movie in 2d is like those standard definition spots for new blu-rays transfers

that is to say totally helpful
