Toy Story 3 Easter Eggs

A113 in Pixar Movies

Pixar loves to hide Easter eggs in their films, little references to movies and characters from the animation studio’s past and future. two years ago we put together a compilation of WALL-E easter eggs, and last year we published a listing of easter eggs in Up, so we decided to do the same thing for Pixar’s latest film, Toy Story 3. We’ve found over 60 easter eggs and bits of fun trivia, our most extensive easter egg feature to date!

If you haven’t seen the film, be warned that this article references and scenes from the film which may be considered spoilers. I’ve tried to keep plot details out of this or vague. All of the screenshots were compiled through trailers, commercials and the batch of clips that Pixar has released to promote the movie (I’m sure there are many more easter eggs hidden in the 80% of the movie not online). Enjoy!

Lets begin with Andy’s room…

A few pieces of art hanging on the walls in Andy’s room were actually created by “Toy Story 3” art coordinator Erin Magill when she was in high school. There are more than 300 stickers in Andy’s room.

Among the stickers on Andy’s wall are references to other Pixar movies, like below you can see a sticker referencing Finding Nemo.

On Andy’s door is a yellow sticker:

This newt crossing sign is a reference to a Pixar movie initially slated for release in June 2012, which has since fallen into development heck.

Here was the film’s announced synopsis:

newt marks the directing debut of multiple Academy Award winning sound designer Gary Rydstrom, who made his Pixar debut with the short film Lifted, which premiered in front of Ratatouille. What happens when the last remaining male and female blue-footed newts on the planet are forced together by science to save the species, and they can’t stand each other? Newt and Brooke embark on a perilous, unpredictable adventure and discover that finding a mate never goes as planned, even when you only have one choice. Love, it turns out, is not a science. Will be released in Disney Digital 3-D

The character of Andy is voiced by John Morris, the same actor who voiced Andy in the original films.

In Toy Story 3, Andy is about to leave for college, but in real life Morris is 26 years old. (photo from 2008)

In Toy Story 2, baby Molly was voiced by Lee Unkrich’s daughter, Hannah. The director re-purposed those same recordings for Molly in the home video footage shown at the beginning of “Toy Story 3.”

Another character who returns for Toy Story 3 is Andy’s toy-torturing neighbor Sid. Here is a photo of Sid from the original:

Unfortunately there is no photo of the cameo online yet. Sid appears as a garbage man. You will recognize him because of his black and white skull t-shirt.

The calendar in Andy’s room which used to show an image from A Bug’s Life now has a picture of a Snot Rod, a character from Cars.

Both calendars, even though set years apart, are turned to the month of August.

Above Andy’s closet is a street sign for W. Cutting Blvd….

the street on which Pixar’s original headquarters were based. The pins on the map in Andy’s room correspond to the hometowns of “Toy Story 3” production staff.

Andy has a banner hanging on one of the walls in his room that reads “P.U.”

P.U. stands for Pixar University, a professional-development program for Pixar employees.

A postcard on the board on top of Andy’s dresser says…

“Carl and Ellie Fredricksen” on it.

Who of course, are from last year’s Pixar film Up.

On the same board is…

A Sports schedule sponsored by Pizza Planet.

There's also a clear Lord of the Rings reference: When Hamm unleashes 'Death By Monkeys', Rex leans into it in exactly the same way as the Ents do when the dam is broken at Isengard (at the end of The Two Towers).

In the first picture which talks about the Lots-o’-Huggins Bear being featured in the film 'UP' if you look to the right hand side of the picture there is a lamp, the shadow of the lamp is actually the one of the PIXAR logo lamp and not of the lamp featured.

Sorry if anyone's mentioned this already, but here's one:

    Toy Story 1-
Buzz: "Woody, this is no time to panic!"
Woody: "It's the perfect time to panic!"

    Toy Story 3-
Buzz: "This is no time to be hysterical!"
Hamm: "It's the perfect time to be hysterical!"

I think I have found another Easter Egg, and I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere before.

At the ending credits when Bonnie arrives to the daycare, the girl on her right side is Boo (as we all know). Boo's backpack has flowers like her closet door, and what's more, on her shelf there is a green plush toy that resemles a green version of Randall.

in the opening scenes the door frame of Andy's room is shown. it bears marks of
his height (?) at different ages; next to them it is also a toy name - buzz, rex, bo, ...
these are (chronologically?) the names of the debian gnu/linux os releases.
it is known that debian is naming the releases after toy story character's names.
(I am not 100% sure of this since this was shown very briefly)

is it just me or is one of those stickers kind of like the medal of the gods in Hercules, but it's not Pixar so probably not...
I love Boo she's my favorite character hahahha
  • I think it's definitely Boo from monsters Inc. the tell is that she's sitting next to a blue kitty. Kitty was what she called Sulley in the movie, and he was blue. Not to mention she's got the same eyes and look to her.

    another egg noticed:
the last frames of "Toy Story 3" -- a cloudy sky -- match the first frames of the first "Toy Story" -- the wallpaper in andy's room.

In one of the bonus content material selections from the Toy Story 1 Blu-Ray (I forget which one) you can watch the storyboard for an alternate opening scene for Toy Story 1 in which the toys are portrayed in a full-on story imagined by Andy (this is supplemented by forewords and commentary by the directors). The scene was scrapped back then. It has now reemerged as a basis for the opening scene of Toy Story 3; obviously there have been changes to allow for the inclusion of newer characters from Toy Story 2, but the overall idea originated here.
  • Loved these!

Bonnie Hunt voices the Doll in Bonnie's Room. This marks her 4th Pixar film. She was the Scare Instructor in Monsters, inc., the Black Widow in A Bug's Life, and Sally in Cars.
  • Calenith
The license plate on Sid's garbage truck is RM237, another reference to The Shining.
  • James C Hare
i have 3 easter eggs. 1st, in Andy's room he has an Easter Island heads sticker, also in the scene when Rex is in front of the door a toucan-like bird can be seen out the window on top of a tree. These may be references to the upcoming film Rio. Also, when Velosistar237 says, "U there, made it to the dark fortress." and at the end when Rex and Trixie are playing a computer game. These ARE definitely references to the Buzz Lightyear Video Game Rex is obsessed with in Toy Story 2
  • Jim
Maybe I'm looking to hard but the scene where Lotso pulls Woody into the dumpster sure struck me as so much like when Gandalf was pulled over the cliff in Lord of the Rings.
  • Dan
Wow I was reading through all this list wondering why no one else had recognised such an obvious homage! I'm glad it wasn't just me who noticed it.

As soon as I saw it I instantly thought LOTSO IS THE BALROG PULLING WOODY WHO IS GANDALF INTO THE FIRES OF KAZADUHN or whatever that place in Moria was :)
