Tron Legacy Billboard #3

Tron Legacy Billboard #3 Tease

Walt Disney Pictures bought the billboard located at Santa Monica/Westwood in Los Angeles for an entire year. Beginning in mid-December, the studio has been updating the location with new Tron Legacy advertisements,at the rate of one every month and a half. And it was revealed they will keep doing so up until the release of the film in December 2010. Today the third billboard in the series was release, which you can see in full after the jump. Since the billboards seem to be telling a story thus far, I’ve also included the first two billboard images below.

For those of you who live in LA, you should be on the lookout for new tron billboard creative in mid-april.

What? No 90 degree / right-angle turns on the light cycles??? Gahhh!!!
  • I hope that they will release the original Tron on Blu-Ray as a promo leading up to this. If they are paying all this money for promo stuff, I don't see anything by benefit by releasing Tron on Blu-ray.
  • I'm hoping for this too, it'll look fantastic.

    @racknahm

Sounds reasonable, but Clu was derezzed in the first Tron. In both trailers a young Bridges is shown wearing yellow, which argues that he may be a program, possibly a new Clu. I'm not sure how I feel about that.

If the mystery rider is some computer manifestation of Flynn (Clu II), then why bother tinting the visor?

We should also keep in mind that their is a lack of continuity in suit design in both trailers and between the posters themselves. Just look at the helmet design of the mystery rider in the recent poster, it's got corners. In the first poster, and the VFX trailer, it's rounded like Flynn's son's helmet.

Still nine months to go, so anything is possible. We'll hopefully get more CLUes as they continue to release billboards. ;D

In the first trailer, didn't the helmet that showed Jeff Bridges' face look more like a screen than an actual face? Maybe that's what the "tinting" is... an LCD screen that is turned off????

What's the betting that the faceless lightcycle rider is actually....his FATHER?

(Or his father's corrupted avatar, or whatever it is)

Bear in mind I know very little about the plot, other than what I've seen in the trailer. Were there supposed to be de-aged versions of Bridges / Boxleitner in the film, portraying their virtual selves/programs?
  • racknahm
I think it is going to be Clu, since he's the only character ever shown to be yellow/orange.

I don't know about Boxleitner being de-aged for Tron as I don't know if Tron is even in the movie, but I read an article about Bridges being de-aged for Clu.

I meant to reply to your post, but accidentally started a new comment. Check it out below.

I was just about to post the same exact comment. I don't like the masked character, because it just feels like the "reveal" will be disappointing. I'm starting to get bad vibes about the story. I'd prefer if they just straight up had a new bad guy, like Sark in the original TRON.
  • Yessiree
    orange/blue contrast anyone??!
  • Exactly what I was going to write.

Hey now that I think of it, how is Bart Simpson dressed?

    IT'S EVERYWHERE.

You know Hollywood's running out of steam when a Tron sequel's a tentpole release.
  • IsaacRosales
I don't see the negative in Hollywood taking a chance with giving a true sequel, to a cult-status movie, that was way ahead of it's time now that the technology can actually represent what had to be the original vision of those involved in the first one.

    Tron's a terrible movie.
  • No it isn't, and I didn't mean to like your comment. :( It may be a little cheesy but that doesn't make it terrible. It doesn't even make it bad.
  • This movie looks so clean and smooth!! THe 2nd trailer got me hyped. The Iron Man 2 trailer was awesome, but I liked the Tron trailer better.... Tron took it's trailer to a different dimension.... The visual effects in Tron look ground breaking.
  • tron guy
wait they switched which direction they were coming from?
  • Arcturus
I wonder if there is a light cycle action sequence in this movie...
  • Chris
    More than likely.

    Sarcasm, dude...

Joseph Kosinski (director of Legacy) talks about the film confidently and Disney seems to have been completely sold that this will perform well.

With what we've all seen I think this is the one to beat in 2010. Inception, Iron Man 2 being the others.

    Good times indeed.

The fact that we have/had insane genre films coming out like Avatar, District 9, Inception and Tron Legacy has me thinking that we've hit a point where CGI is finally being used as abstract art, by unique filmmakers, to tell exciting stories, not just to make dinosaurs and explosions.

The way Disney is going all out on the marketing makes it seem like they're counting on this being their big blockbuster.

Toy Story 3 and Prince of Persia are coming out 6 months earlier and they haven't gotten this kind of marketing push.
  • sideshowRaheem
Toy Story is getting a gigantic push from what I can see. They put Toy Story and Toy Story 2 back in theaters in 3D for two weeks, Disney didn't do that for money it was basically a big commercial for Toy Story 3
  • EVGNick
I'd like to see a digitally remastered TRON in 3D pushed to theaters this fall. (I'd pay HUGE to see that one)
  • TheGreenMalice
It had a lot to do with money. And 3D. Was it beneficial for 3? Yes, but not a commercial.
  • TheGreenMalice
Both Toy Story and PoP are relevant franchises, and haven't been dormant for over 20 years. Based on what is being shown for Tron, it looks like they are doing everything they can to tap the nostalgic feelings before they start truly promoting the new story. Toy Story basically sells itself, and PoP has a built in audience. Tron is a wild card and probably needs some help.
  • Kellic
If they were really wanting to build the nostalgia factor they would rerelease the original Tron in August-September for a 1-2 month run. I mean they remastered for the DVD after all. Its simply a matter of packaging it.
  • EVGNick
Totally agree w/ TheGreenMalice here. Toy Story is Toy Story. 'Nuff said. With PoP, it's a gamble due to the well known history of how Video Game flicks have done in the box office. (even in PoP is a great movie, this has to be taken into consideration). Now with TRON, (I was only 3 when the original came out), but once my parents had me experience that film, I've been in love with it since. Disney has obviously vested some good dough into this 3D technology kick and I don't blame them. 3D actually looks f-ing fantastic now. I think they're taking a page from the Avatar book in the way of force feeding just enough marvelous eye candy for many months, but nothing too revealing to get the old fans on board, and bring new blood onto 'the grid'. I could stop watching footage right now, and will be there for a midnight showing without hesitation. (But, with the way Peter is spraying the TRON love all over /Film, that's going to be impossible to do...) HA!
  • Chris
    Precisely.
  • The Man Called X
what happened to the Prince of Persia poster?
  • Blackstar
Who cares? Hopefully someone burned it.
