Ridley Scott’s Alien Prequel Will Be Shot in 3D

alien

Shadowlocked has confirmed with Star Wars and Alien art-director Roger Christian that Ridley Scott’s upcoming Alien prequel will be shot in 3D.

Christian, who ran into Ridley at a recent film festival, hopes to work on the film, and breifly experessed his excitement for the project:

“Ridley told me some of his ideas when we were here in Toronto. He has a very clear understanding of where this should go. They kind of stopped dead one of the greatest horror franchises there’s ever been, and it had legs to go on. So I’m hoping he’ll revive another three. The world certainly wants it, and the fans want it - everybody.”

Previously:

In May 2009, it was revealed that commercial director Carl Erik Rinsch was attached to direct a remake of Alien. We have since learned that it is more of a prequel than a remake. I was one of the few people actually interested in Rinsch’s involvement. Rinsch’s commercials show an amazing sense of imagination, visual effects artistry and composition (we’ve profiled his amazing commercials on the site). But apparently 20th Century Fox wasn’t happy with the Scott’s choice of director, holding out for the original helmer — Ridley Scott.

At the time I believed that would never happen. Why would Scott return to film a prequel of one of the most popular sci-fi film franchises of all time? Why compete with yourself? Producing the film seems like a much safer bet. Who knows why, but Ridley Scott signed on to direct a prequel to Alien.

The film will be a direct prequel to Scott’s original 1979 film. In a 2002 interview, Scott wanted to return “to where the alien creatures were first found and explain how they were created.” Chances are this idea would also be incorporated into the reboot. Jon Spaihts will write the screenplay, a job he earned after pitching the studio and production company Scott Free. Spaihts has no produced credits, but has written Shadow 19 and Passengers, both of which are also sci-fi space thrillers.

Empire spoke to Scott when he was out and about in London to attend the local festival premiere of his daughter’s movie Cracks, and the filmmaker  threw out some really general statements about the film — they know where it’s going, the screenplay is now being written by Jon Spaihts, and then this more specific tidbit:

“It’s a brand new box of tricks. We know what the road map is, and the screenplay is now being put on paper. The prequel will be a while ago. It’s very difficult to put a year on Alien, but [for example] if Alien was towards the end of this century, then the prequel story will take place thirty years prior.” … “I never thought I’d look forward to a sequel but a prequel is kind of interesting. I’m looking forward to doing that.”

Weyland_Yutani, I see you defending Scott rigorously, and that is admirable. But the man you're defending wants to make a movie of the board game Monopoly.

Let me repeat that: Ridley Scott wants to adapt the board game Monopoly.
  • Weyland_Yutani
Hard to defend that, but it is one of 17 films listed as "in development" on his IMDB, which also lists Brave New World and The Forever War, so I'm not sure what to make of that. He seems to choose some diverse properties to develop.

Regardless, direction is the issue, and most notably SF direction. When it comes to this, you would be very hard pressed to criticize the track record. What is open to question, is the amount of love and dedication that will be there for this one film. Does he see it as just another project or does he see it as something to cement his SF legacy? Personally, I think his choice to direct the film himself is exciting in this regard. His return to what he does best has been a long time coming.

I'm going to remain positive about this film until I have a qualified, good reason not to.
  • Weyland_Yutani
Give Ridley Scott some credit. He's a skilled filmmaker and has decided to take back his own visual creation. I'm actually pretty shocked that anyone would imply that his directing this film is a bad thing. WTF?
  • Lux
3D this, 3D that.. why you guys don't make a new section called: "Hey yo! This movies are coming in 3D!" and stop wasting my clicks?
  • Slatters
What, the fucking headline of the article wasn't a big enough hint for you?
  • Candy Castle
I am very thrilled there will be an Alien Prequel, but does it have to be in 3D. Just keep it old school.
  • cinefan
If by old school you mean 2-D, then you can just go to the 2-D presentation of it.
  • Candy Castle
If he decides to shoot it with 3D camera's like Cameron, and I think in the end he will, than I'm not going to see it in 2D.
  • cinefan
You either mean that there will be no 2-D presentation available, or you mean that you will avoid it for the fact that it's shot on a 3-D camera.

The first meaning is incorrect: all 3-D movies are also shown in 2-D to make their money back - there aren't enough 3-D cinemas to support a film yet (under a certain budget that is; but we know that Alien will be over that budget).

The second meaning is either a rejection on principal: i.e. you will boycott the film; and/or it is a rejection based on aesthetic: you dislike the look of video (modern 3-D must be shot on video).

To that final point I would say: did you watch District 9? Did you like any of Fincher's recent movies?

    (so there)

Quit it with the 3D talk already, that's not the issue here. Scott has completely missed the point of his own film, he's missed the point of the title of the film itself! It's fucking ALIEN. It has a mouth in a mouth, no eyes, acid blood, the damn creature makes no sense and we can't relate to it on any level, that is the true beauty and horror of it, it's ALIEN.

By explaining it's backstory, Scott completely and utterly destroys the last remnants of dignity the franchise had left. The prequel is indicative of everything that is wrong with Hollywood.
  • skidmark
I couldn't agree more. It's all about money.

Money is what motivated 'Aliens', the worst movie in history, to be made, and it is what caused Alien³ to be butchered beyond recognition - watch the Assembly Cut once in your life, and understand how stupid Hollywood think you are. Yes, it was going to be a very good movie.

Something being seriously wrong with Sir Ridley, I believe the only person who can save the next Alien from complete meltdown at this point is H.R. Giger.

I'll say it again: I believe the only person who can save the next Alien from complete meltdown at this point is H.R. Giger.
  • cinefan
Well, what if by explaining their origins they come across as even more alien? You know the old adage: good answers only lead to more questions.

I don't have the imagination to foresee how such a story could be cineplex fare, though.
  • Slatters
"Explaining their origins" is exactly what kills the mystery and intrigue of the first fucking movie. Not everything needs a back story or needs to baby-step the audience through (ie. Hannibal Rising).

What you don't show can be just as powerful as what you do, another one of the main points of the first Alien movie.
  • Weyland_Yutani
Again, you guys are assuming this is some sort of origin (let's explain everything story). Until you see a script, just stop it.
  • marco-r
I am so SICK of 3D films... I guess in the near future i won´t be enjoying any film in cinema due to headache problems... Thank you f***ing Hollywood.
  • cinefan
Just take an eye patch to the cinema - problem solved.
  • Slatters
You can still see the films in 2D dude, lose the melodrama.
  • All artists are genius' but seem to lose touch with their audience. There is a serious dilemma for Rid, and yes he prefers to be addressed as "Rid" (in my head at least). There is such a demand for him, among the "geek *<3* crowd," that I feel this is a forced decision. The problem is that an Aliens prequel is awkward and not a natural progression for him. Rid seems intent on doing another Scifi movie, but is forcing Aliens upon himself. I love him for his inventiveness, and I don't want to see a re-hash. I do not have faith in his reclamation of this beloved series. This could be great (more like good) but I don't expect it to be more than a shallow prologue to an already great series.
  • Slatters
I really can't believe Ridley Scott is making a prequel. Yes, lets completely destroy all of the mystery and intrigue that made the first movie interesting in the first place.
  • NoName7579
How about it has nothing to do with opinions, and everything to do with keeping the original the way it is. I said nothing about bitching and complaining about it; I was only suggesting that if you don't like the idea of a prequel don't go see it.
  • freemachine
Exactly. It's part of the reason I don't read the Alien Wikipedia entries. It's so much more enjoyable to speculate as to their origins.
  • NoName7579
You guys could just not watch it. That might help keep the magic of the original.
  • Slatters
Yeah, how about we just completely abscond from posting anything that may be anywhere close to an opinion. Yeah, that will spark alot of lively debate.
  • freemachine
Or...we could all just keep our opinions to ourselves (you included), and then the /Film comments section could turn into a ghost town.
  • Yep. A prequel by definition will demystify, and the Alien is probably the movie creature that fares the best by NOT having it's background explained. I don't want to see where the space jockey came from and the Alien homeworld. I don't want to know anymore than I do now. That's why Alien is so scary.

Monsters aren't scary if you find out everything about them and see their houses and their bedrooms and what hobbies they like.

    Stupid.
  • Slatters
Ridley Scott is not the infallible genius that you seem to think he is, he's has made his fair share of poor decisions. I've seen the quotes from him and his people regarding what they want to do with the prequel, and until I see otherwise I will remain adamant that this is a retarded idea.
  • Weyland_Yutani
You guys are making a lot of assumptions about what this prequel will be. Why make any sequel to any film if anything before or after will ruin your imagination?

It's going to happen. Ridley Scott is not George Lucas. Give the man some credit.
  • ashwilliams
Roger Christian make Battlefield Earth, that masterpiece with John Travolta.

I have some much hope in this film, now he is on board
  • gibbelin
Yeah, I know right? No way should they hire an Academy Award winning art director if he was terrible in a completely different job position. That makes perfect sense.
  • ashwilliams
Oaahh! I forgot, the Oscar, that prestigious award that always win the best people in the bussiness. My so sorry!
  • gibbelin
Nice try, but there's no getting around the fact that he's extremely acclaimed as an art director. I don't know what you're trying to prove here, but you just look dumb.
  • 3D! What? Crazy! Didn't see that comin.

And Sigourney Weaver is signed on? Right? I think I read that. How are they going to make it a prequel and involve Ripley? How would she have come into contact with the Aliens before the events of the first film take place?

    ANYWAY. 3D. Sure.
  • Craigasorusrex
I really want this new Alien movie from Scott to be excellent.

The first Alien is a masterpiece, I really hope he at least matches that piece of work.
  • concretelogic
    Well, here we go again.
    I give up.
As long as I can still see it in 2D I guess that's OK. I'll stop complaining until they release a movie in 3D only. Once this 3D thing drives me out of the theater altogether, then I'll get pissed again.
  • Zig
As much as I'd like to call this thing a gimmick...

If done right, it might give me face hugger nightmares for the rest of my life. I thought I'd left all that in a room, under the bed, in my childhood, somewhere...
  • hmm
Is it real 3d or fake 3d conversion
  • presto117
it says it's being filmed in 3D, so real 3D.
  • As long as the movie is good, 3d or 2d makes no difference to me. Focus on the script, not the special effects.
  • Dan W
Yea I first and foremost want the movie to be good. My 3D concern comes second.

I am hesitant that this will be 3D. All the others Alien movies (except 3) worked fine without 3D. However we haven't seen a truly scary movie shot in 3D yet so who knows? I hope it really enhances the movie and not detracts from it.

Here's to hoping the space jockey is involved somehow!
  • cinefan
If you don't like 3-D, just don't watch it in 3-D, or close one eye when you watch it in 3-D.
  • J.D.
Exactly. Avatar sucked plot-wise. But at least it sorta had one, unlike the Hurt Locker.
  • Kalel
Coming tomorrow -- Danny Boyle's "127 Hours" : in 3D, followed by the Coen Bros. "True Grit" : in 3D.
  • Chuck Deuce
So does this take the lazy connect-the-dots crap that was done in AVP films and shoot those two movies into a sewage treatment plant?
  • Atlas
The film industry hates one-eyed people.
  • Maughtry
What would John Ford have done?
  • This is both hilarious and really sad. Never really thought about one eyed people missing out on the experience of 3D.
  • I would prefer to be deaf rather than being blind. I can't imagine how difficult it must me.
  • wESh
    What's next? Page 2 in 3D?
Seriously 90% of this weeks news had "in 3D" at the end
  • presto117
hey, at least this is being FILMED in 3D, so it'll be real quality.
  • lude
jesus christ, enough with the god damn 3D already..
