Wolverine 2 Script Finished; Shoots January 2011

Slow news day today, so there are a couple of small news items bubbling up. One is that the script for Wolverine 2 has been handed in, and a January 2011 start date decided for the sequel to Hugh Jackman’s last mutant outing.

Roger Friedman reports that Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, Valkyrie) has turned in a script, and that it is, according to Friedman, “a little different than we originally thought.”

The basics are what we expected to hear: McQuarrie’s draft is loosely based on the early ’80s mini-series by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller that helped establish Wolverine as one of Marvel’s major characters.

So what’s different in McQuarrie’s draft? Friedman says he’s been told the film features “a love story featuring a Japanese actress.”

That suggests that the primary female character is switched from being Mariko Yashida, the daughter of Lord Shingen Harada. In the limited series, Mariko was forced into marriage with an abusive man, which Wolverine attempted to help her escape. Shingen drugs Wolverine and challenges him to a duel, who defeats him. Also involved is a female assassin named Yukio, who later became part of the extended X-Men universe.

The female lead could still be the daughter of a warlord, or married to an abusive man. Maybe she’s married to an abusive warlord! More than anything else, I expect the script to make the female lead a more active presence than we saw in the mini-series.

Meanwhile, we still don’t know who’ll direct. Gavin Hood, the man behind X-Men Origins: Wolverine, has said he is not attached, and Friedman mentions that Fox has not yet settled on a director.

Furthermore, with January being ten long months away this script could very easily undergo rewrites. In fact, I would expect at least a couple of minor rewrites done in the next couple months, and if a director with a particularly strong sensibility is hired there could be significant changes made.

I took the Japanese actress comment to mean they needed a Japanese actress to play the part, not that the character was an actual Japanese actress

am I alone here, it seems like Russ took it to mean the character was an actress

I wonder if they just hire Bryan Singer for this film too. That would be something to watch.

I like Hugh. I like Wolverine. I'm just glad this stuff is on the silver screen. I remember being a kid watching the cartoons and thinking a movie would be awesome. Me and my brother would rattle our brains as to who could be Wolverine. We first thought like Mel Gibson(this was like 17 years ago mind you). We did think of someone else but that actor prolly doesn't even act anymore. But first seeing Wolverine come to fruition through Hugh was just great. I don't know how there can be so many haters or picky people. I say just be glad it's gotten as far as it has. You have to admit though. Hugh would look so badass in a future X-Men film with like Cable and Bishop and shit. I can just imagine the grey hair. And who knows, maybe that could happen and be directed by Snyder. Get an R movie with some true Logan grit.

So, which Japanese actress has the acting chops and English skills to pull this off? No doubt they'll cast any East Asian (Chinese, Korean etc) or even Asian American leading lady. Any suggestions?

  • I don't get the hatred for the Wolverine movie. It's not perfect, but so what, it's a Wolverine movie. I thought it was fresh. It felt like an episode of the old show. Which is to say, stupid and didn't adhere to much logic but it moved quickly and had cool effects and fight scenes.

I love a terse cerebral thriller as much as the next guy, don't get me wrong. But I thought it was fun. And then I couldn't figure out why everyone was so MAD at it.

3 reasons to hate the Wolverine movie:

    1. Unnecessarily convoluted plot.
    2. Taking Wolverine out of a team setting, then introducing 8 new Wolverine teammates/supporting characters (and casting Will.I.Am as one of them).
    3. Creating multiple cliffhangers in a movie that does not justify a sequel.
  • That doesn't warrant hatred. That might warrant annoyance, but hatred? Hating the Wolverine movie is like hating a retarded kid.

And as much as I do have hatred for Will i am he didn't really do anything, he was just 'Black X-man' to me. And he died, right? That's a plus.

It warrants hatred by anyone who actually know the real original story. They did not make that movie for real fans, they simply tried to make money off of stupid teenagers. They completely F***ed up the story and many character tie in's that should not have been there.
  • Put Wolverine in the Avengers!!!
  • mchops
It's crap that we can't have Spiderman or Wolverine in The Avengers. The studios really need to get their act together and work something out to make it happen.

Gavin Hood did well with what he was given for Origins. The problem was the script and the cgi so why not bring him back?
  • Rbishop-0070
you are an idiot, any good director who gives a damn about the real story would not have agreed to do that horrible story. Plus he even admitted to not being a fan of comics. He simply thought that the character of Wolverine was "interesting".

maybe they can turn wolverine into a Bond like Franchise making it last for generations

most people is already tired of Wolverine after four freaking movies (and only two of them were actually good)
  • Not sure if I should be excited or not about this.

I know Huge loves the character but I don't want to see yet another watered down child friendly Wolverine, something for mid-late teens please.

Also give him a suit already like his X-Force one, so what if he has a mask on RDJ has a mask for Iron-Man so does Peter Parker .. why can't good old Logan!!

Anything is better than a wife beater and jeans!
  • Huge Ackman does indeed love the character.
  • He has said in many interviews he does, yes the last one sucked but I will put that down to Fox throwing in far too many cameos and watering Wolverine down.

You just have to watch the extras and see how Hugh is into the character and really does like it.
  • I just like saying Huge Ackman.

It's really hard to defend a movie like Wolverine. Unless you're a kid or an adult in geek denial.
  • Zack Snyder was going to direct Origins but left to focus on Watchmen...I'd love to see Snyder try his hands at a X-Men film...it would be beyond visually stunning and we wouldn't have to worry about horrible CGI claws....
  • Elowella
No CGI claws, but maybe CGI blue dongs.
  • with PG-13 we never have to worry about blue dong ;)
  • Oh sweet Jesus is the going to suck! The first one was one of the worst comic adaptations ever...let alone one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Please don't get Gavin Hood to direct...
  • JMoney
I'm not defending the Wolverine I because it did suck, but it is not one of the worst comic adaptations ever:

    Electra
    Ghost Rider
    Blade Trinity
    The Spirit
The Fantastic Four I and II
    The Punisher

there have been some bad comic book adaptations, Wolverine wasn't the worst, it just seemed the worst because the huge decline between X2 thorugh X3 to this movie.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!

Then walks away while things blow up behind him.
  • Tough guys don't look at explosions.
  • Craigasorusrex
    XO:W sucked, like a lot.

It's going to take a lot of talent involved at the directing level of things to turn this character around.
  • goldfarb
so it starts shooting January 2011...when do the re-shoots start?
  • movieguzzler
Gawd that movie was terrible! The pre-release leak did the movie a whole lot of good at the box office. How I wish we could go back in time and prevent it from ever being leaked!
  • SgtZim
They should post composite sketches of Gavin Hood around the production offices, wearing various beards, moustaches and hats, in case he applies for the directing gig under the name Guy Incognito or Miguel Sanchez.
  • Philipo
lol I can imagine posters saying DO NOT HIRE THIS MAN - HE IS CONSIDERED ARMED AND TALENTLESS.
  • this news still doesn't change the fact that the 1st Wolverine movie was terrible.
  • having Christopher McQuarrie writing the film makes me believe this one "might" not suck...since he was involved with creating the Singer X-Men universe...he's not going to overrun the film with unnecessary mutant cameos...I just hope they hire a decent director that's the biggest issue at the moment
  • VanDammit
    you mean they don't control/fire/replace/rehire a director... :)
  • if Fox ends up hiring Zack Snyder who was up for directing Origins before taking on Watchmen...they can't do that with someone like Snyder he has too much success and respect...I'm sure his contract would give him a lot more creative control than Gavin Hood did...allowing Snyder to hire his own effects companies and crews...Hood might have an Oscar but he hadn't really worked in Hollywood or at least on a blockbuster....

what worries me is actually shooting in Japan...it's notoriously expensive to shoot there so with 20th Century Fox who are cheap when it comes to productions...if they hire Snyder he could double anywhere for Tokyo or any other Japanese city...similar to what he did with New York in Watchmen
