Captain America

I like John Krasinski, but I just don’t see the guy as Steve Rogers, aka Captain America. And yet he’s one of the actors reportedly being eyed by Marvel to take the lead role in Joe Johnston’s film. Who else is the studio looking at? The list is after the break.

In addition to John Krasinski, Scott Porter (Speed Racer, Friday Night Lights, Caprica), Mike Vogel (She’s Out of My League, Cloverfield) Michael Cassidy (Smallville) and Patrick Flueger (Brothers, The 4400) are the core crowd right now. Also possible are Chace Crawford (Gossip Girl) and Garret Hedlund (Tron Legacy), but the former hasn’t made a deal to screen test and THR reports the latter is off the list as his people can’t come together on a deal with Marvel.

There are some interesting aspects to the test process. Marvel wants each actor on a 30-day hold during the testing, says THR. (The Ryan Reynolds scenario where he took a role as Green Lantern just as Fox was preparing to commit on an approach to Deadpool won’t be repeated. Fox later moved forward with Reynolds and Deadpool regardless.)

DHD also says that the offer for this role will be low — around $300k for this first film. Bundled into the contract will be the requirement to sign for a nine-film option that will include additional Captain America and Avengers films, and other possible sequels and spin-offs. Shades of Samuel L. Jackson’s reported Marvel deal there. Note that those options don’t mean that the films will be made; it’s part of the contract process for these films, though nine options is extensive.

Marvel took a similar approach to casting Thor, and ultimately went with someone that wasn’t on a similar shortlist. So the fact that these actors are testing doesn’t necessarily mean anything. Much as Chris Hemsworth did for Thor someone else could end up with the role. I hope that’s the case — none of these names is particularly inspiring. And Krasinksi? That’s just weird. If that’s what Marvel is thinking here, I have to change my thinking about what they’re trying to achieve.

I like John Krasinski. Anyone can bulk up, so his beanpole-ness is not a problem, nor is it with anyone on this list. but what i like most about Krasinski is that he kind of has that All American, Normal Rockwell illustration look to him. dopey ears and all. I think this would be a great angle for the character. better than all the pretty boys in the mix anyway. start out as some regular American guy and then super soldier project happens and BAM! All American Guy with Huge Muscles

Those with the inability to see Krasinski as Cap only reminds me of the lashing Burton and WB got for Keaton as Batman, only to have the public turn on their criticism and embrace his performance. Here’s a physically appropriate, talented actor with charisma to burn; exactly what a hero needs, yet people object. If casting goes the other way, we end up with someone like Tobey Maguire, and look how that went.

Alexander Skarsgård should be Captain America!!
  • Gemeril
Totally agree, his character in Generation Kill was awesome. He's got the acting chops and the look right.
  • wonka bar
Patrick Flueger is Captain America, done deal.
  • Reformed_Geek
Based on looks alone, I'd go with Patrick Flueger or Scott Porter. Porter having the better jaw line and I am guessing he plays a footballer player in Fright Night Lights so that should give him some of the build.

As for Krasinski... never seen the US Office, but the google images of him... he's not cap. To goofy looking.

I am behind Jensen Ackles... scheduling issues be damned - Supernatural isn't going past season 6, so they can shift to a mid season show with little to no impact. Hell it might even do better during the summer.

Might as well have Jim Carrey as Captain America....man guys at Marvel are taking some stupid pills.

haha can you imagine Captain America looking at the camera every once in a while and giving that 'whaddya gonna do' look..?
  • John Krasinski? Is Cap going to look at the camera every other scene?
  • Anti-Septic
I didnt like any of the people listed in this article, especially John Krasinski. Studio people can be that retarded? Or can they!
  • wonka bar
Patrick Flueger is Captain America...you heard it first here from Wonka Bar.
  • jp ftw
Flueger and Porter get my vote. I love Krasinski and all, he's a solid actor... but I'd just be waiting for Cap to look at the camera, make an awkward face and then marry the receptionist. Those other guys look the part for reals.

Someone brought this to my attention a couple of days ago, and the more I think about it WOW just WOW and he would fit the "unknown" as well aws low budget Captain while building his career immensely...

Matt Bomer (White Collar), who adding some bulk I could really see as the Captain, too!
  • J pape
None of these guys should be captain america. How about Joseph Gordon Levitt
  • John
Chris Pine is a terrible actor and a pretty boy!
  • dr_hamburger
all of these guys are very... underwhelming. none of them could hang w/ RDJ in an avengers flick. why all the hate for chris pine? he would be the best choice i think. who else but capt. kirk could boss around RDJ on screen and be believable? ryan gosling would be good too. i know hes recently shot down doing these kinds of flicks, but, y'know, i can dream. or ryan phillipe maybe? im just spitballin here
  • We need a time-machine to get Aaron Eckhart from 15 years ago.
  • ERoBB
I'd be perfectly okay with an older actor like Eckhart.
  • KevRuzz
I've still got my fingers crossed for Philip Winchester, but between those listed, I'd be cool with Scott Porter or Garrett Hedlund.
  • Of these six, Porter has to be the man. Krasinski is too goofy, and the rest but Hedlund are too pretty. Porter is great on FNL, his Jason Street character has to show a lot of different emotions, and he excels. For those don't watch FNL, he plays a star quarterback who gets paralyzed from the waste down (similar to Paul Walker's character in Varsity Blues, but legitimate drama and acting). He would pull off Cap well.

this smells of 'bait and switch' to me. They're probably already pretty certain who they want and he's probably not on this list but they threw it out there to completely send people in the wrong direction. Then they'll go "Haha - actually its THIS guy, and he's perfect!". Who that is, I do not know (if only Micheal Biehn was 25! Now he would be perfect).
  • iantherage
I've seen that picture of Captain America on plenty of posts, and haven't thought a thing about it.

However, after looking at it again. He is holding the STUPIDEST shield. Has anyone else noticed that? I've never seen him hold anything like that.
  • TotallyNotNick
Guys, Steve Rogers isn't BORN a tough, fearless man's man. He BECOMES one over the course of the film. Whoever plays Cap will play him as a character that starts out as an average underdog and then grows (or is shaped) to become something far greater. Why would we want someone who only looks like a tough guy? How is that interesting?
  • LaFluer
i hope they have John Krasinski as capt america. and then Rainn Wilson red skull. thatd be 90s craptastic
  • Joey
    should've been chris pine
  • john
you're all morons for not seeing how perfect scott porter is for the role

    fingers crossed
  • samboni
for all thats good in the world dont let Chace Crawford be in it!
  • The fact that Ryan McPartlin and Jensen Ackles aren't here is...discouraging.
  • Captain Chan for the job
My vote is Channing Tatum as he has the looks and the voice, he is Captain America in my eyes.

You know that if he had to put on that extra beef needed for this role it would work for sure and no one plays a soldier like him, why not upgrade to Captain America?

Whether you like his acting or not, me thinks he improves with each role that guy was made for Captain America and he has already brought down Avatar that was EPIC in the box office. The movie will make serious money.

Only joking re Avatar love that movie but still he has my vote?????
  • Manu Def
This was actually what I first thought when I saw GI Joe, but his lack of acting skills turned me off too much.
  • greggorybasore
While none of these guys scream out Steve Rogers to me, Vogel and Hedlund look like the best choices. Krasinski... I just don't feel it

Glad to see Johnston going with a bunch of unknown candidates
  • lorettajohnson
    LOL John Krasinski, really?

that guy has zero screen presents, absolute zero presents, doesnt exist.
i mean he's passable on the small screen, but the silver screen? puhleez!

my money is on that fine ass white boy Chace Crawford!!!!!
  • deets
you're right, the guy hasn't once ever given me a screen as a gift for my birthday. not ever.

Watching Junebug the other night led me to believe that Cap should be played by Alessandro Nivola.
  • DoomSpaunger
Watching Junebug the other night led me to believe that Cap should be played by Amy Adams.
  • These mostly seem like good choices. Krasinki would bring plenty of easy going charm, but if I was picking it would be Scott Porter. He has the looks, build, and voice. His role on FNL as hometown hero, team captain, and quadriplegic shows his acting talent and necessary gravitas.
    I'm with Porter.
  • thelastknowngod
id really like to see Mathew Fox play the captain.

he had a similar type of persona as Racer X. just want to see that as the main focus and not as supporting cast.
  • Enthropii
John Krasinski? Are they fucking kidding? Sure, the guy's awesome. But as Cap? lol...
  • Cass
Not 100% sold on any of the choices yet (Ill hold out until we see any sort of footage) but I will just put my faith in it. Glad they aren't lucking for some super-muscly Arnold type of guy. Thats not what Cap is about.

I'd love to see Krasinski try the role to see how he can do but I'd hate for him to do it, bomb, and the franchise have to reboot.

I know its unconventional but I really think with comic book movies they should put out like 5 minutes of test footage from a bunch of actors on the net and let the geeks choose. Its a tough crowd to please.
  • I'm holding out hope for Ryan McPartlin he's perfect for the role.
  • moviefan
out of the list there i would like to see porter, hedlund, maybe vogel. Would have loved to see mcpartlin. Cant wait for the official word.
  • 3GirlRumba
I agree about Jensen Ackles. He'd be an awesome Cap. Jeremy Renner would also be an awesome Cap, but it's rumored he's going to be Hawkeye. :\
  • Reformed_Geek
    I like Renner for Hawkeye...
  • Retroqqq
    Sharlto Copley?
  • Slatters
    Jackie Chan, duh.

i think that John Krasoinsky can be the all american hero and play the perfect dynamic of the relationship between steve rogers and tony stark in the future avengers movie....and also it will e easy for him to grab the role with his fiance being the leading lady in Joe Johnston’s lastest film wolfman
  • sdfsdfsd
    Just cast Will Smith alredy!
  • EbonPinion
    Whoa, whoa, whoa...
This is Steve Rogers, here. Not Isaiah Bradley.
