Darkest of Days

The Rock/Double Jeopardy screenwriters Douglas Cook and David Weisberg are attached to write a a big screen adaptation of the first-person shooter time-travel war video game Darkest of Days. Joe Roth (Alice in Wonderland, Knight & Day) is producing and CAA is currently shopping the project to the hollywood studios.

In Darkest of Days the player controls Alexander Morris, a soldier fighting in General Custer’s army during the Battle of Little Big Horn at the beginning of the game. After Custer is killed and Morris is wounded he is suddenly rescued by a man in futuristic armor and taken through a strange portal. Morris then awakens in the headquarters of Kronotek, an organization that has managed to develop time travel technology and is apparently dedicated to researching and protecting history. A Kronotek higher-up known as “Mother” tells Morris that the organization’s founder has gone missing and disturbances have started appearing through history, causing individuals that have played key roles in history to be placed in danger, and tasks Morris with helping Kronotek restore history.

The game, developed by 8monkey Labs and published by Phantom EFX in September 2009 for the X Box 360, takes the player back in time into historic battles in an effort to save key individuals from certain death in order to save the continuity of history. For example, according to Wiki, “the battles range from Custer’s Last Stand at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876 to fighting in Pompeii as ash and fire rain down from an erupting Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD.”

I haven’t played the video game, but it seems to be getting lackluster reviews (47% on Game Rankings). The concept seems solid, and anyone who knows me knows that I’m interested in any story which involves time travel.

You can watch a trailer from the video game below:

  • this is a great development which gamers will love for sure...
  • I'll echo the chorus and say that this game is fucking terrible.

It's hard to believe we couldn't get a HALO movie and they're thinking of masking oa movie of this janky-ass crap.

Holy shit the only thing that could possibly make this idea worse was if Uwe was attached to direct. What the fuck are they thinking?

Imagine if the game was a cake. The recipe to a really delicious cake, the most mouthwatering cake you ever had. But the kitchen staff who made it f***** up the the making of the cake and burned the cake.

You see it seems to me that the developers had the right idea for a great game but royally fucked it up during the making of it.

My point is, the IP seems solid, and it could make for a great movie.

    P.s
The fact that this is not Halo, Mario, Final Fantasy or Doom, makes it a lot easier for the developers to make something that won’t end up being shredded by the millions and millions of Video Game fans who see the games as the written word of God, and to change even one iota would be like spitting in the face of the almighty.

I've played the game and it's pretty damn awful. I think this is going to be a rare case of the movie actually being better than the game.

The game is fucking awful. Why would they make a movie?

Didn't play the game but from everything I heard it has about the lowest production values you'll see on any major console and a marketing push to match (published by Phantom EFX says enough). I'd be shocked if its sales were better than terrible, and I can't imagine the name carry's any weight (In The Name of The King: A Darkest of Days Tale?).
  • the demo was indeed pretty horrid but the trailer was hilarious as well as teh concept.
