Saw

Could Saw VII be the final installment of the popular horror movie franchise? Screenwriter Patrick Melton, who co-wrote the last three Saw films and the upcoming seventh movie, claims the the series will probably end with the seventh installment, and they have even planned to wrap up the lingering questions.

The following quote comes from Melton on UK radio station 107.5 Demon FM as transcribed by LatinoReview:

“I think it’s going to end with Saw VII. I have a very strong feeling its going to end with Saw VII. That’s something we’re debating now. You saw in previous interviews or discussions where we thought Saw VIII would be the last one where we had the first trilogy and the second trilogy and then sort of a grand finale wrapped up in two films. But frankly because Saw VI hasn’t performed as well as we anticipated, the idea is well why make two movies when we can make one really excellent movie that wraps up as best we can? And it’s going to be in 3-D which sort of adds to the spectacle. So if you had to ask me, I don’t own the franchise, nor do I run the studio, but I have a feeling, a strong feeling that it’s going to be Saw VII which will be also known as Endgame. And nothing’s official yet, but that’s where we’re hoping things will go. “

Melton says that the seventh movie should “solve all questions by the end” including what happened to Dr. Gordon, which Patrick promises “will be resolved and it’s not going to be anti-climatic.”

Of course, if the seventh film’s performance at the box-office is a dramatic improvement over last year’s installment, Lionsgate might greenlight Saw VIII and the series could continue further. Basically, as long as there are people to pay for it, there will be Saw films. The situation is that, if last year is any indication, less people are willing to pay for it.

  • anyone know if Saw 3D and Saw 7 are the same movie? Is this the one that Kevin Greutert has to do instead of Paranormal Activity?

and all the film fans and critics will look up and shout "no more Saw!"... and I'll look down and whisper "No."

Badass and true. Most people here don't even really keep up with Saw anyways... like "I'm getting tired of Jigsaw" (spoiler: Jigsaw died in the 3rd movie) or "They've been saying "it's the last one" for 3 movies now. Just end this heap of trash already!" which is actually the complete opposite of what "they've" been saying for the past 3 movies. Every informed Saw watcher has known since Saw III that there were going to be at least 3 more Saw films.
  • about time. I'm getting tired of Jigsaw.

They've been saying "it's the last one" for 3 movies now. Just end this heap of trash already!
  • I’ve been hoping that they would call it a day ever since I watched part III. Now that they are thinking of wrapping it up there is past of me which is relieved yet I don’t believe it will happen. If they do go all out with a 3D spectacle it will probably get more bums on seats and then it will all start over again with them deciding to keep it running. They really need to get a very good storyline and some new novelty, not 3D, to really make it worth seeing, rather than just doing more of the same.

I highly doubt that the screenwriter has any say if this long running franchise will end.

It is simply due to profit, and if it is no longer profitable... then they will stop making them.

As for the series, I liked them beyond the first one, up until about the last 2 or so (I can't recall). Torture porn is fun, but if that is all it ends up being there is very little reason to continue watching. It would be like taking the meaning and care out of Gaspar Noe films. Why put yourself through that for no reason?

...and this concludes my longest post, which happens to be on the Saw movies (kind of sad if you think about it too hard /haha).

Oh and I forgot to mention: there is something which makes "this is the last movie!?!?!?!" marketable for some godawful reason.
  • wonka bar
Exactly topheavy! They did a little of this with the marketing campaign for Saw 6, they said alot more stunning questions will be answered...BS, i went to see Saw 6 thinking this and it was god awful. The only answer it gave me was that this was the worse movie of 2009!
  • See: Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning followed by Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (followed by two more films and a remake) ... I guess they can just reboot SAW, but no way have we seen the last of it.
  • Slatters
I'm actually surprised they haven't launched Jigsaw into space yet.
  • Best news I have heard all day...minus the 2nd blizzard that's coming to the east coast!

This may be the final installment on the big screen, but the studio will find a way to release straight to dvd garbage (ala american pie).
  • Thats probably true.

the only reason announcements like this are made - by the people that are actually making it no less - are because any publicity is good publicity. basically trying to drum up a few more dollars, 'See this last Saw in theatres, there will be no more!'

unless of course it makes a lot of money. then it'll be 'Back by popular demand, Saw 8!'

pretty transparent attempt (on the part of the writes/producers) to draw attention to a crap series that no one cares about. they're certainly not announcing it so that everyone who hates all these garbage Saw sequels will breathe a sigh of relief.
  • mbellerbrock
    Very good observation.

Ugh it disgusts me, Saw 1 was so good...

Stop sending these idiots money people!!!
  • mangoshakes
even i'm kinda wondering what happened to cary eweles. not cause i've seen any of the movies but that's all i freaking here about when a new one comes every year

I don't mind saw, but I am not sure that 7 saw films are going to really capture the audience, they were ok when they first came out but now I am not sure where they can take it.

Torture porn gets old fast, but they might be able to squeeze a few more out if they film in legitimate 3D (no conversion). Seeing some elaborate killing devices in 3D might be worth the price of admission to a lot of people and help reinvigorate the franchise.
  • Slatters
You think seven years of sequels is "fast"?

As long as these movies continue to turn a profit (which is almost inevitable as they are always released at Halloween) then I am sure we are in for plenty more.
  • I'm rather saddened that Heroes ended before the Saw series...
  • Heroes is gonna be back next year. yeahhh buddy. i think i'm the only person left that still likes heroes
  • damnitall
    They both deserve to die.
  • Poland626
Hahhahahaa.....oh, you're serious that this is the last one?
  • Jlo725
Hell yes, next will be the reboot.
  • [A]
..I might be wrong but didn't they show a foot-less corpse in one of the sequels?
  • The_Kid
Finally I've been waiting for this series to end since they announced a sequel to the first one, which was amazing by the way. They rest of them have been crap, but I did like the one with the black cop and the one with the doctor.
  • damnitall
Why don't they just make them direct-to-DVD like they did with Hellraiser and other horror franchises?
  • Anrkist
You liked it so much you refer to Danny Glover as "the black cop." Interesting.
  • I think The_Kid was referring to Saw IV which focused on Lyriq Bent's character, a black SWAT commander.
  • The_Kid
Yeah, that's why the one I'm talking about.
