The Greatest Muppet Movie Of All Time

muppets

A couple weeks ago it was reported that Flight of the Conchords director James Bobin has signed on to direct the new Muppet film for Walt Disney Pictures. The screenplay written by Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall), was titled The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made, but has now been renamed The Greatest Muppet Movie Of All Time. In my opinion, a much better title — but can the movie live up to the title? The Playlist has talked to someone who has read the script and has a few details about the plot of the film.

They story follows a man named Gary, his girlfriend named Mary and the man’s life-long nondescript, brown puppet best friend Walter must round up and convince the now retired entertainers from the original Muppet Show to help save the famous television studio that the original variety series was filmed in. The film’s evil villain, Tex Richman, is due to take over the property, and wants to destroy the theater and drill for oil underneath.

The anonymous scooper calls the the screenplay is a “solid attempt at recapturing what made The Muppet Show and the first two Muppet movies so great, but The Great Muppet Movie of All Time is no Great Muppet Caper.” He complains that the story ius set almost entirely in the world of showbusiness, which doesn’t allow for many sequences with the Muppets “out in the real world”, which is a shame.

Stoller and Segel have fun with the characters, are aware of what made the Muppet early years so great (winks to the audience, friendly musical numbers, single gag repetition, friendship and togetherness being the answer to everything), and hit the mark 65% of the time.

While the script reviewer has some problems with the story, the quote above is very reassuring as many of these things have been lacking from the Muppet productions released over the last decade. You can read the full review on the playlist.

I hope they feature more scenes from the Muppet Show set rather than our own urban scenery. I wish Animal talks more in this film than his occasional appearance in each Muppet Show episode. I would like to hear Rowlf play the paino in this film. I would like to see more Muppet merchandise sold around the world before Christmas next year.

"In 1990, Harris appeared in character, as Dr. Howser, on The Earth Day Special, which also included an appearance by the Muppets.
In 1993, Harris was one of the hosts for the Disney Channel's pediatric AIDS benefit For Our Children; Baby Sinclair was another co-host.
In 2005, in the TV Guide column "What I'm Watching," Harris expressed his admiration for Jim Henson, in answer to the question "Who's your all-time TV hero?":

Jim Henson. He taught me how to be funny and how to share and communicate, and he did it all with felt and cut-up Ping Pong balls. Between the Fraggles, the Muppets, and Sesame Street, he entertained and educated an entire generation. I hope to do a children's show like that someday.

In a 2009 issue of TV Guide, he mentioned some of his favorite shows of the past, including Fraggle Rock -- "because I can't ever do a list without including the Muppets!"
Neil Patrick Harris played a "Fairy Shoeperson" in Episode 4162 of Sesame Street. On the February 15, 2008 episode of Late Night with Conan O'Brien, Neil discussed this appearance. He and Conan O'Brien also talked about Harris' love of the Muppets and his admiration of Jim Henson, when Harris shared that the only fan letter he had written as a child was to Henson."

I'm just throwing this out there.

Jim Henson has to be rolling in his grave right now.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall was one of the worst films of the decade. I don't need to hear Muppets making stale dick jokes for 90 minutes.
  • craigery
its a sad day when trolls find their way to /Film :/
  • perkele
What, because I don't like immature comedies about grown adults acting like horny teenagers, all of a sudden I'm a troll?

I'm a die-hard Muppet fan who doesn't want to see the characters I grew up with ruined by such a terrible writing team.
  • try thinking it's good for you
Why do people associate horniness exclusively with teenagers, anyway? Adults aren't horny? Sexuality is an adolescent phase you outgrow? I never got the logic.

Also, many filmakers and screenwriters are actually capable of making more than one type of film, believe it or not.

Alright I guess you're not a troll, just trying to get a rise out of people on here who obviously enjoyed Forgetting Sarah Marshall. When you make a statement like "Forgetting Sarah Marshall was one of the worst films of the decade" it makes you look so fucking stupid. Do you know how long a DECADE is? Do you realize how many GOD AWFUL films have come out in the last year alone? I'm just saying, don't make dumb ass statements like that. Good you're a die-hard fan, but if you aren't happy with this live with it because it's obviously not gonna change. By the way what makes you think it'll be anything like his other movies? Who would put dick jokes in an actual Muppet movie?! They're not idiots, they make successful films. So please, just don't.

    god. people man, people.

yeah i agree TROLLS STAY OUT!

i'm pretty sure the script jason segel and nick stoller turned in was called "the greatest muppet movie of all time." disney was going to call it "the cheapest muppet movie ever made"...they're probably just going back to the original title.
  • I'm keeping my mind open for this, it could potentially be a lot of fun. I like Jason Segel and I love The Muppets, so it should be at least a good, nostalgic time at the theater. The end of the Muppet Movie still gives me chills: "Life's like an movie, write your own ending..." Good stuff.

does anyone think the picture of the Muppets riding their bikes looks somewhat unsettling
  • Yes. I'm sure when the apocalypse happens, they will be the first thing I see outside my window.
  • Does Peter Segal have some kind of puppet fetish? I'm on board for this. Forgetting Sarah Marshall was incredible and he definitely knows comedy. Who knows what this could be like. I greatly enjoyed the Dracula musical.

Also, given that the Jim Henson bio-pic "The Muppet Man" was the top script on this years Blacklist, could we be seeing multiple muppet movies in the same year?

I have no idea who Peter Segel is.
  • That's cause I'm an idiot and wrote Peter instead of Jason. But Peter actually is director of Get Smart/Tommy Boy/Nutty Prof. 2 and a few others. But yes, I was referring to Jason, since his first screenplay Forgetting Sarah Marshall had it's awesome puppet scene.

I really want Dracula Puppet Musical

    Dracula's Lament FTW!

This guy named "Gary" sounds like he should be Kermit the Frog and "Mary" sounds like she should be Mrs. Piggy.

Keep the focus on the frog. Kermit is the only lead you need.
    Jim Henson understood this.

Ironically, this will probably be the worst Muppet movie of all time if it's anywhere near as bad as that god-awful Forgetting Sarah Marshall mess.

No, do less. Get down. Try again. No, just don't do anything....Well, now, you gotta do more than that. Now it just looks like you're boogie boarding...
  • i hope it's the greatest muppet movie of all time.
  • [INSERT KANYE WEST JOKE]
  • Superstarseven
    I'll let you do that.
  • The original Muppet Movie was, is and always will be The Greatest Muppet Movie Of All Time. That is all.
  • Not if they ever actually make The Muppet Man.
  • If it's half as good as the ending of Forgetting Sarah Marshall and/or Flight of the Conchords, it has a good shot at being the greatest.

My favorite is the Christmas Carol adaptation.
  • papasanchez
Im the same. Loved that version. Its still one of my favourite christas films.
