Tarantino

Jeff Wells has posted three awesome clips of Quentin Tarantino telling stories from the Directors on Directing panel in Santa Barbara this weekend. I’ve embedded all three after the jump. The first clip is about how directors raise the bar on each other and Tarantino recounts a story Brian DePalma told him about Martin Scorsese and Blow Out vs. Raging Bull. The second story is about how he had to prove himself the first week directing Reservoir Dogs. And the third story is about how James Cameron’s Avatar might have affected Kill Bill if it had been released first. I could listen to Tarantino tell his stories all day long (which reminds me, why doesn’t XM/Sirius hire this guy to do a weekly one-hour satellite radio show?) Watch the clips after the jump.

  • Peter I COMPLETELY agree with you about Tarantino having his own radio show, where he could talk of course about his own experiences, but more importantly offer insight into the history of cinema, and his favorite directors. I always love clips like this, but the ones I've seen where Tarantino is in control and introduces a film like "There Will Be Blood" is just always revelatory.

    Tarantino > James Cameron. OSCAR.

Movies are sadly, overanalyzed as are their intregal components- not to say I don't enjoy them, but if only we had the capacity to focus on world problems and discovering solutions as we do with such trite.

If only Tarantino could be this guy all the time, rather than the d-bag that spoke at the Grammys. He's possibly my favorite working director, but he's also the most frustrating in real life.
  • It's not like it was a well thought out plan to tell that joke! It was off the cuff.
  • I love Tarantino to death, I could listen to him talk all day.
  • Justin Jump
Are you people serious? You like to hear Quentin Tarantino TALK?

He is one of the most grating people to listen to of all time. No, he is THE most grating person to listen to of all time. His voice, the speed at which he talks, his 'humor'....fuck. It's painful.

Norm Macdonald did the best impression of him ever.

Tarantino is not a genius. He's an immature dude who loves movies and the sound of his own voice. His movies might be fun but have nothing to do with reality -- as you might expect from the mind of a child. He is a success as filmmaker because of the mediocre intelligence of the average person in society will mistake his cartoons for profundity. Everybody forgets that he is a rip off artist of scenes from other movies strung together into a "story". The problem is they are turned into a cartoons that appeal to the mind of a 15 year old boy. Tarantino recently admitted that his favorite movie of all-time was "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly". It's a good movie as entertainment but it's a fake western. It's also embarrassingly corny and hyper-dramatic. I loved it when I was a kid but I outgrew this type of movie. Tarantino has not and should be ashamed. I don't care he's famous, he strikes me a loser who found his niche because he can make crap that the average person will lick up. He also seems like a closet case or at least someone deeply insecure about their ugly mug. Tarantino is not a great artist but a decent con artist.

We love his films. He's a genius. So yes we like to hear him talk about film because we love film and he makes great ones.
  • Justin Jump
How is this about 'loving film' at all? I love film. I love a lot of Tarantino's films, even.

But the art and the artist doesn't have to be intertwined. I love Pulp Fiction but the guy who made it gets on my last goddamned nerve. I love Chinatown and Rosemary's Baby but the guy who made it is kind of a scumbag.

It's not a huge deal. I'm just saying I never knew there was people who would love to sit down and just listen to Tarantino talk, because that is my own personal hell.

And that crowd...yeesh...he says 'You see a movie at the Cineplex, go home and do pot'....the crowd just BURSTS into laughter. I don't get the joke. There is no joke. And 'do' pot? Guh.

PS. I only watched that one because I really liked Avatar and I wanted to see what he had to say about it. As annoying as he is.
  • why watch the video?
If listening to Tarantino talk is personal hell for you, then I suggest you avoid sites that have video clips of him speaking.
  • Justin Jump
    Oh. Still's not funny.
  • He actually says, "...go home and have pie." That's why the crowd laughed.
  • I was there, the room was dripping with Ego, amazing Pannel, At One point Tarantino talks about having the last second hand theater in LA and he would never play a digital film on there, he would "Burn it to the ground first" Camerin was very upset at that point.

After they had a screening of Posse with Kurt Douglas, and a Q&A with Tarantino and Douglass (or they called it a Q&K).
  • Tarantino is awesome. I love his energy and enthusiasm for movies. It would be great if someone had the whole panel.
  • These clips are great, thanks for posting. I'll never tire of Tarantino, the man has a unique mind.
  • tarantino from the 90s was a pretty smart guy, i really like his interviews from back then. tarantino now is a fucking moron. he's movies are still good, which is why i can forgive his existence.
  • Well I wouldn't call him a moron. I did get the impression that he had lost his edge in some of the interviews I had seen him do in recent years. But very recently since Inglorious Basterds was made I get the sense that he is on top form again, as good as he ever was.
  • Malaguy
    You sir, are a douche.
  • Ya I could listen to the guy talk all day, and I think that he could literally talk for days about movies. Iv'e got the Reservoir Dogs special edition DVD but don't think I've seen that part. Ya I'd like to see the casts of his films talking with him on the Charlie Rose show or something like that. Tarantino should actually just do more interviews in general.
  • Brian
He is the man. Anyone ever see the Resevoir Dogs special features in which Michael Madsen is talking about his dog and whips out the hilarious line that goes something like, "He was a good man. A good dog." ? That line, along with his story of stopping at Taco Bell with a human being in the trunk of his car has become a sort of inside joke between my freinds and I. I'd love to see panels with QT and his actors sharing funny or insightful info about their now iconic films.
  • Ya I think he's talkin about himself and Paul Thomas Anderson, as his comparison to DePalma and Scorsese. For some reason I hated Kill Bill. I might have "got" it if I knew more about japanese movies. Tarantino radio sounds great. The man is a genius. His stories are hilarious. "There's always a fuckin Scorsese!" Haha.
  • quintushalls
I'm still waiting for Tarantino to make the David Chen biography.
  • Guest
    That's Jason Reitman's gig!
  • gustavomustafa
Bad video compression - what the hell did you use? Cinepak?
  • Colonel_Kurtz
I stayed up all night 2 nights in a row to watch the last shuttle launch, and I missed it because I was watching these vids. Damn you, Tarantino!
  • brandi1
lol i bet it was worth it though, right?
  • wESh
Now after the third vid it actually makes sense why would there be a third Kill Bill, he wants to make everything up for himself. He's the man, thank You for the great videos, keep it up.
  • Kensei
Would like to see all of this besides just small clips. It's kind of like a teaser just leaves you wanting more. Thanks for posting.
  • hankN
and also, the 1st vid is kind of cut off in the beginning. I assume he's talking about Paul Thomas Anderson as the Scorsese to his De Palma. Am I right or wrong?
  • sideshowRaheem
Yes, he's talking about how he and Paul Thomas Anderson have the same type of friendly competitive relationship Scorsese and De Palma have or had I guess.
  • hankN
yeah thanks. I heard him talk about PTA that way in his "Tarantino Takes over Sky" videos
  • Max
    He's talking about Scorcese
  • PizpotGargravarr
At the start he's talking about his own relationship with another director where they're always trying to one-up each other, then he goes into the story about Scorsese/De Palma.
I don't know who he's talking about exactly. If I had to guess though I'd probably say it's Robert Rodriguez, seeing as they both came up at the same time (I think they met at a festival where both El Mariachi and Reservoir Dogs were playing, if I remember rightly) and they're really good friends who have collaborated on several things together (e.g. From Dusk Til' Dawn, Sin City, Grindhouse).
Personally, although I like Robert Rodriguez, I don't think he's films are on the same level as QT's but I wouldn't be surprised if there's something of a rivalry between them.
As for PTA, I don't know what his relationship with QT is so I couldn't say either way whether that's likely or not.

EDIT: I guess it is PTA he's talking about after all. That's interesting and pretty cool.
  • say what you will about quentin, but the man can talk
  • malars
    He's a natural storyteller.
  • hankN
    A) yes. Tarantino radio. I'm in.

    B) any other clips from this panel anywhere? I love this stuff. thanks for posting it
  • Reece Farris
    Quick fix...I like it!!
