24 season 8

The producers  of Fox’s hit action serial television series 24 have been talking about doing a big screen movie adaptation for years now. I just assumed that it was one of those things that would never happen, and that the made for television movie prequel they did last season was an easy out. Well it looks like star/producer Kiefer Sutherland is serious about bringing Jack Bauer to the big screen, as he has convinced Fox to hire Billy Ray to pen the screenplay adaptation. All we know about the planned story for the feature film is that it will be set in Europe. Sutherland and producers have said that the big screen movie would be “a two-hour representation of a day.”

Ray’s filmography includes State of Play, Flightplan, Suspect Zero, Hart’s War, Volcano and Moon director Duncan Jones’ upcoming much-buzzed about project Source Code. He both wrote and directed Breach and Shattered Glass.

But studio insiders cautioned Variety (who broke the story) that a 24 movie “is still very much in the preliminary stages,” and that there are “a number of factors influencing how quickly it moves ahead, including the fate of the TV show.”

Fox has not yet decided if they want to order a ninth season of the series, although it is expected that this will be the final season. According to EW, 24 is down versus last year by 10% in total viewers (11.9 million versus 13.3 million) and by 15% in adults 18-49 (3.9 versus 4.6). It is hard to imagine that Fox would spend the millions and millions required for a big screen feature if they weren’t impressed with the ratings enough to renew the television series for a tenth season. Stranger things have happened (Arrested Development was canceled and will eventually become a big screen feature).

A big screen movie would probably guarantee that Bauer will survive his ninth crazy day. Since first discovering the series in 2001, I had hoped that Bauer would someday die on screen, in the possible biggest twist the series could possibly pull. I know a lot of fans would hate for that to happen, but I think it would be the ultimate way to conclude the series — with CTU and Jack’s friends having to save the day without him, in his honor. Sutherland and 24 producers have always said that Bauer’s death was an extreme possibility.

It would be nice to see a big screen 24, with a big blockbuster budget. But without the real-time structure, won’t it just another action film, but with the characters we’ve gotten to know from television? I wonder how it could/would be different.

Although I'm relly looking forward for the movie(Ninth day),I should say that I think this was the best way to finish the story for Jack, ofcourse I love his character and I want it to continue, but this was the best, you know he left ,not dead, and he can never work for CTU or any where else, because as president Taylor said"russians will come for you and so will we" this was great ending, honestly I love Jack Bauer and I don't wanna see him die..never ever...

Well I think now that every one has watched the season final, you can agree with me that the writers need a hilarious applaude...BRAVO WRITERS,I COULDN"T STOP THE TEARS RUNNING DOWN MY FACE..there couldn't be abetter ending...THANKS FOR the great work..WHEN"S THE FILM BY THE WAY?You'd better mention the time...
  • It's hard to know if this is a good choice or not judging on Billy Ray, because Tony Gilroy also had a hand in the State of Play script, and he's a screenwriting god. But I think the State of Play script was phenomenal because of how tight the film was and how fast moving and well paced it came out. If Billy Ray had anything to do with making it those elements, then there isn't a better choice for a 24 film.

24 is a decent shows. I followed one of the seasons..

State of play was the one of the worst movies I have ever seen.
  • At the risk of not meeting the "cynical blog commenter" status quo... I look forward to whatever they do with the 24 franchise. The series has consistently kept me interested since 2001, and is among my top 5 shows on TV.

And they shall call it: "2".

24 without real time? Wowww, talk about missing the point by a million miles. Christ.

I hope they'll keep in the bits where the plot meets an important turning point and freezes for five minutes while the commercials play.

"a number of factors influencing how quickly it moves ahead, Including the fate of the tv show" = movie not happening!

I admit that it would be pretty surreal watching 24 sans the beeping clock, and by surreal, I mean pointless.

BUT, to be fair, 24 has consistently been my favorite TV show for the past 8 years, despite its sometimes downright shoddy screenwriting, veiled conservative propaganda, and washed-up actors giving washed-up performances.

There's no question the show has had 2 or 3 bad seasons, and it's gotten to the point that even as far as comic books go, it's pretty convoluted. But how often is it that a show has a chance to redeem itself and lives up to its own hype? How many shows can make a seventh season as fresh as the first?

That's what watching last year's 24 felt like. This year's? Not so much. It seems the writers are TRYING to recapture the spirit of the earlier seasons, but with the crap writing that sunk Day 4 and Day 6. I remember I didn't like Season 7 until at least Episode 8, but this time, I'm almost not feeling it at all.

Still, for tradition's sake, I will close out the series and can only hope that big screen Bauer will drop all the kitsch and improbability of the series and do what's right for the medium of film.

i feel that the problem with ending bauer's life, is that there is nobody left who really matters in his life, to surround him, and give him the respect that he deserves. they just started killing off everyone who mattered to shock us and keep us on our toes. its bad writing and disappointing.

moments like that work because we see the anguish and determination in the characters who carry on the good fight. and how powerful can that truly be when the person(s) left are merely aquaintances?

the only people left who really matter to jack are: kim, chloe, and tony. is that enough people, or even the right mixture of charachters left to do something worthy of sending jack fucking bauer out in honor? after that, its just a revolving door of seat fillers. anybody else who would 'save the day in his honor' would be just somebody we recently met. it would take away from the impact that a moment like that would truly deserve.

now, of course the three people i mentioned are definitly huge parts of his life - but would they be enough to make it as powerful as it could be? i dont think so, but thats just me. it doesn't seem like it'd be enough to see kim mourn, while chloe fed tony info as he took down whomever it is they are fighting.

in the end, shouldn't it be a lot more people left who really knew the man? (and btw, yes, tony almaeda is a badass.)

Yeah, you should probably go back & watch last season.... Tony's dead.
  • luvinx
Um, no. He is (presumably) in prison, not dead.

Uh, did you watch last season?

Count me out. 24 hasn't been good for atleast 2-3 seasons now. And the best/unique aspect of the show is the real time action. Without that it becomes a standard action movie.
  • Gomer
Are they just going to play the movie in 12x fast forward?

I'm still watching 24 but I hope this is the last season. It has gone past the realm of implausibility where everything happens "within the hour." A big screen finale would be great if it was called "26" and a 2 hour continuation and close to the final season.
  • "It has gone past the realm of implausibility where everything happens 'within the hour.'"

Pu-lease, 24 passed that realm after season 2 or 3. You can only save the world in exactly 1 day so many times. I gave up on Season 3.

i'm not sure if this is cheesy or, but i could see a studio calling it '24/7', and stretching it out over a week for big screen purposes.
