The Terminator

The Terminator movie rights went up for auction today, and Sony Pictures and Lionsgate were bidding frantically back and fourth from 3:00pm to 8:00pm tonight. But as the dust cleared, neither movie studio came out the winner. Halcyon accepted a $29.5 million bid from a Santa Barbara-based hedge fund Pacificor, the debtholder which pushed the company into bankruptcy.Of course, this is subject to the approval by the bankruptcy court.

According to Finke’s source, “Sony and Lionsgate dropped out at just under $29.5 million when it became clear that Pacificor was willing to pay almost any amount of money for Terminator.” As part of the deal, Halcyon will keep the revenue streams from Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and Terminator Salvation, and will receive $5 million for every Terminator movie produced in the future.

What this all means for the future of the Terminator franchise is unclear.  The last Terminator film earned $372 million worldwide theatrically. And while Arnold might soon be available for big screen offers, I’m not sure they could afford him. I’m not a money guy, but it seems to me that the smartest thing they could do is make the fifth Termiantor film for about half the estimated budget of Salvation, aiming in the $100-$120 million range.

They should stay away from the super expensive "future war" and focus more on the time traveling stuff.

People seem so desperate to continue the narrative to be "cannon" that they ignore the coolest aspect of the franchise.
  • This is a joke, right?
  • mchops
Does this mean no more terminator films for at least ten years?
  • Antibody
This "Pacificor" sounds strangely interesting.... Any connection to the electronic corporation Cyberdine Systems?
  • Cineprog
the Franchise for Terminator should have gone to one of the movie studios biding for it, this unnone Pacificor hopful winner of the bid will sell the right to the highest bidder to be able to Distrubute the Terminator film it sad it should have remaind in the film world.
  • papasanchez
Salvation cost $200 m? I'm stunned. What an awful waste of money. Does everyone know about this? There should be protests on the street!
  • Malaguy
It actually only cost about $130 million. I don't know where the $200m quote came from.
  • papasanchez
It comes from this articles last few lines. Try Reading it again.
  • kencosgrove
I don't even care anymore. There hasn't been a good Terminator film in nearly twenty years. That franchise is out of good ideas. The last movie almost has no relation to the first one. It's strayed so far from its roots, that what does it matter, it's practically its own separate franchise at this point.
  • I couldn't put it better. Cameron's Terminator films stand alone for me, and unless he's back in the saddle, I'm not terribly interested.
  • prddad
...and? Most of the movies that we grew up on has been remade. If SALVATION added a chapter to the story I'm all for it. Better that than a remake...
  • Halcyon were apparently developing Terminator 5 since the bankruptcy hearing in September. They've long since claimed Pacificor were after the rights. Now that a deal has been struck, I wonder if they'll continue to get to develop it? Perhaps Terminator 5 is closer than we think.
  • Regarding the low price, it should be noted that Peter didn't mention what may be the most important part of the deal: "An arrangement also was made that the sale now wipes out the debt Halcyon owed to Pacificor and all the other creditors."

If the studios had bought the rights, there may have been a chance that those debts would have carried over to whoever purchased them. This alone could have resulted in this seemingly low price.
  • Vladd88
Who knows? Maybe the bank CEO wants to get into show business.
  • MovieViral
I can't believe that's all it takes to buy the Terminator franchise. Cameron could pay for it with his Avatar earnings lol.
  • freemachine
Cameron should buy the rights and shelve the entire Terminator franchise until he's good and ready to make a fifth one, his way.
  • moviefan
well this is interesting i thought it would end up at a big studio like sony or wb.
  • Ben
Replace "thought" with "hoped" and you've got yourself an idea. Someone with the time, talent, and cash to revive this franchise should have won it.
  • Wello
    What The Hell?
I hope they deny that bid.
