Captain America

As is to be expected, director Joe Johnston was bombarded with questions about  The First Avenger: Captain America, as he appeared on the junket scene to promote his new film, The Wolfman. Collider, The LA Times, Shock and AICN collectively learned a bunch of bits about the next Marvel comic adaptation. I’ve included the highlights below, but click the links to read the full interviews on the respective sites.

  • Casting: Captain America will definitely be played by an American actor, Johnston says he wants to discover a complete unknown and surround him with more prominent names. Johnson says he’s testing five or six guys, “The youngest is 23, the oldest is 32. Most of the guys in the war are just kids, 18 or 19, but we want to go a little bit older.” Casting needs to be complete by March 1st 2010
  • Location/Shooting: The film will be shot in the UK as most of the story is set in Europe. It will be an origin story with “virtually the entire” movie set in World War II, aside from “the bookends.”  Filming starts in London at the end of June.
  • Camera/Look: The film will be shot in 2D High Definition, with a visual style Johnston describes as “a bit different,” trying to interpret the visual style of the more recent comics “into a film in a way that I think hasn’t been tried before”
  • Villain: The villain has been confirmed to be RED SKULL.
  • Costume(s): They’ve come up with a reason to explain why the scientifically enhanced super-soldier wears a bright red, white and blue costume in the World War II battlefields: “After he’s made into this super-soldier, they decide they can’t send him into combat and risk him getting killed. He’s the only one and they can’t make more. So they say, ‘You’re going to be in this USO show’ and they give him a flag suit.” … “So he’s up on stage doing songs and dances with chorus girls and he can’t wait to get out and really fight. When he does go AWOL, he covers up the suit but then, after a few things happen, he realizes that this uniform allows him to lead. By then, he’s become a star in the public mind and a symbol. The guys get behind him because he embodies something special.” The USO outfit will look closer to the classic Jack Kirby-designed costume, but later he will be wearing “a sturdier, more muted version that he makes himself that is more like battle togs. The stripes across his mid-section, for instance, will be straps, not colored fabric.” Johnston says “He realizes the value of the uniform symbols but he modifies his suit and adds some armor, it will be closer to the Cpa costume in some of the comics in more recent years.”

Again, check out Collider, The LA Times, Shock and AICN to see the full interviews and read the full quotes.

I think some people are missing the point. It's important to keep Cap's origin during World War II,as it helps explain his homespun optimism and his almost boyscout like code of beliefs.I have lost all faith that this movie is going to be anything worth seeing.Bad choice of directer.Thor made out better. And the male lead will be from Hollywood's current school of feminine-male-model leading "men".Why do you think people dare to suggest an Aussie like Sam Worthington to play a distinctly American icon like Cap?Because these days you have to go overseas to find a masculine male lead.A sad state of affairs. But a reflection of current reality.Only Mark Valley or Matt Damon could possibly save this sorry movie and they are out of the running.

This sounds like exactly what they should be doing. Why modernize it? That's stupid. Captain America is a hero out of time, and his time is WWII, so that's where he should be. Also, it makes perfect sense to have the government try and hold him back as a publicity tool at first. They just spent millions on him - why would they send him out into combat where he could die? Bullets can still kill him, and millions died in WWII - so it does make sense. It also forces Cap to actively choose to get involved in battle, rather than just being tossed out there. In my opinion, it allows Cap to be even more Cap-like.

    Clint Eastwood = Red Skull
  • dexity
I just hope that Red Skull doesn't end up being Cap's illegitimate son.

from the Director of Jurassic Park 3....comes...Captain America!
  • dihd
sucks that theyre gonna tell caps origin and his ww2 death/freeze-over all in the same flick.
theres lots of good ww2 cap stories to fuel a couple more movies.
  • mobbdeep
I agree, it would have been great if they launched the Cap franchise first, doing a few WW2-based films then dovetailing the end of the 2nd or 3rd one with the Avengers. It would have been cool to use some of the Invaders like Union Jack or Spitfire as the (original) Human Torch & Submariner are probably tied to Fox's Fantastic Four rights.

I wouldn't rule out the ideas of prequels if it's a success as they could still do the man out of time stories with the Avengers.
  • You pretty much have to have him frozen and then thawed to get him read for The Avengers in 2012.
  • Having Red Skull as the first villian is Brilliant if done right. I can't wait to see Captain America take him down!! This should be cool to see....
  • Sounding pretty good so far, would love to know where over here in the UK they are filming would be good to visit :D
  • Jt
I don't like the USO idea. They put Cap in that flashy suit on purpose BECAUSE it inspires people. He's allowed to be a walking target cuz he's friggin' Captain America! I hope they don't dumb this down and try to explain everything, Batman Begins/TDK style. I think Iron Man did a perfect job of capturing the comics, and alot of their ideas were based on the Ultimate Universe, so why not take inspiration from those when doing Captain America? They really did the best job adapting Cap to modern times. If that new suit at the end is anything other than red, white, and blue though, I'll be annoyed. That's all we need is Cap in a sold black suit ALA X-Men.
  • But you get both with this plan. You get the bright Kirby original design, and you get the muted, more "realistic" Ultimates-ish design. AND audiances are sold on why he's dressed so overtly patriotic.

I'm sure this movie will do great abroad. Lol.
  • Craigasorusrex
The USO/Costume deal is incredibly smart.

Some are complaining about it (comment sections of several sites) but it'll play out well on film, plus the GA is who matters here and they really won't get hung up on that. It gives them the ability to give Captain America his memorable outfit with a retrofit in one of bookends.

Thinking on how devastating the USO deal is for Steve Rogers. Someone who truly had every intention of fighting against the Axis gets turned into a literal super hero representing America in the most "gimmicky/flashy" way.

When he goes AWOL is when the awesomeness of CA/Steve Rogers begins to show (although surviving the super soldier serum already one obstacle down). Even though he represents his country, this doesn't necessarily he'll play by their rules.
  • Mecline
Couldn't agree more, the posters on IO9 are tearing this apart for the bit about the USO show but for me It sounds like its going to work out well for the audience in general.
  • Dead on. Not only does it support the costume being used, it establishes a defining character trait. It rules.
  • mangoshakes
i don't see how you could make a captain america movie good without having it set in world war II with nazis.
  • hartman27
Look, can't wait for the movie but all I really want is a Captain America/ The Basterds crossover comic book issue haha! Now that would make my day.
  • moviefan
Some interesting stuff here. cant wait to see how it turns out.
  • papasanchez
I love how people are basing their captain America view on that shit tv movie! Hate to break the news guys but he was in comics first.

I'm happy with the sound of all this. Will be good to see if it flows nicely on screen. I've been waiting for a captain America film since I was four. Was gutted after that tv movie, it ripped me of my innocence.
  • kyle
So am i the only one that thinks John Barrowman from torchwood would make a good captain?
  • Slatters
    Yes, you are.
  • thelastknowngod
honestly, id really like to see Captain America played by Mathew Fox.

looking at him in the Racer X outfit convinces me he could pull it off.
  • starscream9289
You people know nothing of Captain America!

Don't ever speak his name again!

Also, I'm happy that they're sticking to WWII and Red Skull.
  • mangoshakes
there's something funky going on with that shield
  • Andrew Bergamo
There's way too many idiots writing here.

I think what they're doing in the movie is fine/perfect and makes complete sense. True fans should be happy with this premise so far.
  • theJOker
    Agreed. Way tOo many.
  • How can anyone complain about this being set in WW2.. It's freakin Captain America! Redefining Iron Man's origin made sense, but Captain is pretty much stuck with WW2.

Anyway I'm happy about this read, calms a few doubts I had about Johnston, but of course I won't be sold until they release more in the future.
  • Neumann
I'm hoping that HD means "RED" like Gamer and District 9, and not Genesis like Superman Returns, Get Smart, and 2012. That'll give them the native 4K to allow for 3-D, and RED can also do IMAX and 3D and shit.
  • affirmallchance
    go away. you're an idiot.
  • i hate you. you're an asshole.

BECAUSE: Neumann offered a bit of opinion supported by seemingly technical knowledge of camera formats. You offered us nothing, and didn't support your nothing opinion.
  • theJOker
My camera is pUrple and green.
  • affirmallchance
I have two red cameras. I've shot many projects with these cameras. If you don't know what you're talking about but are interested in something spend the time to learn about it. Go to reduser's message board and learn something. Instead of just spouting off on things you are clueless about because people will call you out on it.

    roflmao @ kinder gentler NAZIS.
    lol. wtf.
  • vik713
    Crispin Glover for Captain America!
  • wiki Pee Day
    DANNY Glover for capt american!

I mean he killed predator and everyting this would be the natural next progression. + Riggs was a douche!!
  • Cy_ed
nah...he's too old for that shit.
  • If the Wolfman tanks and sucks I will lose faith in this movie. I just don't think Joe Johnston can handle this type of project.
  • Slatters
Yeah, we need a real genius to bring the cheesiest superhero of all time to the screen.
  • ghost
Bah, Bradley Cooper would've been great but he's 35 so I guess he's ruled out.
  • Christopher_M
I just hope “a bit different,” doesn't mean it will be shot in B&W...I want the Red Skull not the Grey Skull
  • theJOker
    B&W... THat could be interesting!
  • sammyjankis
Can not WAIT for this flick, My Favorite Marvel Hero and one that could make a helluva movie !
  • Maxegg
    RED SKULL!!!!!!!!!!
  • I just hope this movie will be more than the first Captain America Comics, which is mindless propaganda.
  • Kensei
So who said you had to watch this movie again? It's Captain America, what do you think is going to be in the movie? A good Nazi who just so happens to be a bad guy who likes white fluffy rabbits? It's a damn super hero movie, not a documentary on WWII....just sayin'
  • I never said that Nazis are heroes. I don't see soldiers as heroes. That's just stupid.

I said something more shocking: Nazis were humans too. Now, i don't expect to see Nazis being shown as good or as humans in this movies, i simply misinterpretated theJOker comment. That's all. I completely agree with the idea that Captain Americas Orgin story shouldn't be touched and that Red Skull should be the Main Villian. That was theJOker's problem, not mine.

And since when is being a comic book movie an excuse for lousy storylines and stupid dialogs? Movies like Batman Begins, Watchmen, Iron Man, Incredible Hulk and (of course) The Dark Knight shown that very well.

Now, instead of talking bullshit, why don't you just answer my question? Have you read any Captain America Comics, yes or no?
  • Kensei
    Wasn't talking bullshit my friend.
Yes of course I have, been a comic collector on and off for as long as I can remember. I am not exactly old enough to remember the 1940's up to now no. But I have read Captain America comics, even own some last time I checked.
He's not my favorite Marvel character but I have read them.
  • You never read any Captain America Comics, did you?
