New Teaser Trailer: The People vs. George Lucas

The People vs. George Lucas
Last night the full feature line-up for the 2010 SXSW Film Festival was announced, which includes the premiere of the Star Wars fan documentary The People vs. George Lucas. With that announcement, we have also been given a new teaser trailer, embedded after the jump.

The People vs. George Lucas

Official Information from the producers:

THE PEOPLE vs. GEORGE LUCAS explores the titanic struggle between a Godlike filmmaker and his legions of fans over the most popular franchise in movie history. “At its core, PvsG is the examination of a high-profile, dysfunctional love story”, says Philippe. “George created this humongous and intricate sandbox for us to play in; but is he the sole owner of it, or does it now belong to the ages? And what happens to your role as a creator when your audience claims it owns your art? We basically looked at the conflicted dynamic between George and his fans from a cultural perspective, and asked ourselves those questions.”

The documentary features key testimonies from the likes of Gary Kurtz (Producer of AMERICAN GRAFFITI, STAR WARS and THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK), Neil Gaiman (THE SANDMAN, AMERICAN GODS), Dave Prowse (aka Darth Vader), Anthony Waye (Executive Producer of the BOND franchise), and Dale Pollock (George Lucas’s Biographer, Author of SKYWALKING).

THE PEOPLE vs. GEORGE LUCAS inventively combines these exclusive interviews with fan footage from around the globe, and impassioned testimonies from George’s staunchest fans and foes. “Making this film was a huge investigative challenge, considering how many people were afraid to talk to us. George is a very powerful man. But we stuck to our guns and dug deep to deliver a completely uncensored, no-holds-barred factual account, and, ultimately, what we hope will be recognized as a loving tribute,” says DoP Robert Muratore.

“The obstacles we faced made us really think about the rapidly changing filmmaking landscape, and so we used digital technology to facilitate an open call for contributions – allowing us to make a fully participatory documentary”, says Producer Anna Higgs, known for cross-platform work in the UK and Europe. “In many ways, it’s a tribute to the YouTube generation, which Lucas’s advances in technology helped create,” points out Producer Kerry Roy; “fundamentally, it’s about how new media interacts with old media, as well as ownership and copyright in the digital age; and it was our intent from day one to give the fans a prevailing voice in the doc.”

The crew worked relentlessly for two and a half years to produce the most accurate, thorough, and impartial deconstruction of an entire generation’s love-hate for the man (admittedly) responsible for their childhood’s mythos; and they acknowledge that this project wouldn’t have been possible without the extraordinary support and encouragement from the fans and contributing filmmakers. “63,686 frequent flier miles, 634 hours of footage, 14TB of drive space, 126 interviews, 719 fan submissions, thousands of fan emails, and only three death threats. The positives outweigh the negatives, I suppose,” jests Producer Vanessa Philippe. “We were driven by our own admiration for George, profound love of his films, obsession for their significance in popular culture, and opinions about their legacy as cultural milestones,” says Alexandre Philippe.

Agree with most of you here: that trailer is really terrible.
I have no hope for this now.

i dont understand the hate for ewoks. are they awesome or are they AWESOME AMIRITE
  • Tetsuo_Man
I honestly hate the ewoks more then I hate Jar Jar. Teddy bear native american metaphors are just annoying to look at.... at least with Jar Jar I could make my ears mute him out or just dub him over in my mind.

Is this a horror movie? It's scaring the crap out of me!
  • lest78
George Lucas doesn't owe anyone anything. Remember that.

Is it weird that I liked episode I but hated II and III?
  • Grim Charles
I would watch Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back if I can watch the originals and not the DVDs with new special effects.

Oh and to respond to the end of that new trailer: They're JUST films.
  • Mladen
You can. Certain newer versions of the re-released original trilogy include a 2nd disc with a 'bonus feature' of the original, unedited movies.
So you can give the old VHS tapes a rest now :D

I'd watch the Phantom Menace again before wasting my time on some rubbish film that capitalizes on others' talents or mistakes.
  • Mek
By the way where did that awesome picture come from ? I would love to have it printed and framed. A perfect remembrance to how children used to play.
  • Gustavo Tiolga
I just say. Thank you George Lucas for making the film trilogy more influent , ,ore parodied and more known of the ewntire world. That compensates , all your posterior failures, even The Phantom menace.
  • Shane
This "film" looks like an express, one way ticket to turd town.
  • Josh
I was a child of the 80's and Star Wars was my life as a kid. I agree that the Prequel Trilogy doesn't compare to the Original Trilogy but I still loved Episodes I-III.
People really need to let this whole Prequel bashing thing go - It's been 11 years and you still want to piss and moan about Jar Jar Binks? How sad.
If you don't like it, don't support it. It's that simple. Nobody is forcing you to buy movie tickets, DVDs, toys, games, comics, books, t-shirts, etc.
  • Jimmy Mook
I don't care if you loathe Lucas or love him; that trailer is straight up awful and looks like little more than an angry fanboy comment board with inept visuals.
  • Bill
Sorry dudes, I dug the prequels. And if anyone is going to complain about an overabundance of CGI and not enough models and miniatures, I'd recommend taking a look at any of the making-of books for the prequels and you'd find out that there are actually more miniatures used in those films than the original trilogy. Phantom Menace might be mediocre, Clones might be a little bland, but Sith I absolutely loved.
  • Justin
    Edit: nevermind.
  • Mek
I loved the originals. I didn't see the need for enhancements, and did not think that the prequels were as good as I hoped them to be. Guess what ? My child hood is not "raped" I feel no compelling need to drone on and on about how awful they are. You guys act like Lucas was your father and he refused to feed you. It's just a movie. The fact is if the original Star Wars were released today you would be harping on it's flaws (and there are many)
  • Inigo
I agree. Lucas didn't rape my childhood, but he did rape Star Wars. When I watched Clone Wars, I saw that the modern Star Wars franchise is unrecognizable from the classic Star Wars. It just doesn't feel like Star Wars anymore. I'm not angry, but I am disappointed.
  • John
anybody who says "George Lucas raped my childhood!" should be punched in the mouth
  • Tetsuo_Man
Anybody who says "anybody who says "George Lucas raped my childhood!" should be punched in the mouth" should also be punched in the mouth....
  • Well it sure as hell didn't rape mine but im sure there are people out there whos entire childhood was based on star wars (like how mine was TMNT, and the 3rd version literally raped everything that was TMNT for me as a child) so it doesn't surprise me people feel like he raped their childhood.. when you spend your childhood years praising, worshiping and doing and buying everything related to a franchise only to have that franchise be ruined its like the creator is shitting on you personally, i know they aren't but it feels like it.. i know ive been there
  • greggorybasore
Anyone who gets so caught up in an entertainment franchise that one bad movie or TV show "rapes" their childhood is pretty fucking thin skinned. Seriously, no matter how bad the prequels are, it doesn't change the fact that I loved the originals as a kid.
  • Wow the new teaser trailer is really terrible.
  • Jay
    i like Jar Jar Binks!!!!!!

    ...
  • dogless
    Troll.
  • Not everyone HATES jarjar, i don't love him but he doesn't piss me off or bother me but i guess im a troll since i don't hate him.
  • dogless
You're a troll if you're making purposefully incendiary comments - which liking Jar Jar in any context would count as being.
  • Inigo
They're asking Dave Prowse's opinion? I've met the guy, and he's incredibly resented because of what George did to him in Return of the Jedi. Don't expect a fair and unbiased opinion from him!
  • greggorybasore
Wait a sec, are you implying that anyone in this documentary are going to give fair unbiased opinions? I don't think that's even possible. Opinions, by their very nature are biased.
  • Justin
Aside from the interviews with interesting people (Gaiman, Kurtz)... wow, does this look like a waste of time. None of the fans are going to impart anything I haven't heard in some form, somewhere else.

Anecdotal anger about a guy and his movies? Hey, that's new! "Raped childhood", "Star Wars belongs to us", etc. We get it.
  • hb
Nothing but fan boys and a dvx.
  • jetpackman89
I agree. I was like 10 years old when the Phantom Menace came out and yes I would agree with the 70-minute Review that one guy posted but come on it really is just a movie. Some Filmmakers make one great film some make many Lucas just happen to make three great films that people wanted more of. When you look at every movie today there is still a bit of Star wars influence in it. people need to stop hating on this movie and get on with there lives. I love Star Wars and I love the fact George Lucas made it. People just need to get over it.
  • greggorybasore
To be fair, Lucas made 8 great films. That's three for the original Star Wars trilogy, three for the Indiana Jones trilogy, American Graffiti and THX-1138. I'm just really hoping that he'll move onto to something new now that he's finished the prequels.
  • @jetpackman.....

if you were 10 when Phantom Menace came out, it means that you were 7 or 8 when he "improved" the trilogy which, in my mind, was aready perfect as it was. seeing as how you're 20 years old, im assuming that your only experience is these "enhanced" versions, and have not experienced the same Star Wars i did as i was growing up. bottom line is that there was a certain magic to the films which, quite simply, is not there anymore.

i am relieved you didnt conclude your comment by talking about how great Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was, so at least there's that.
  • FK
Lucas made 6 good movies people wanted more off. None of which ever lived up to the old ones.
  • masteryoda007
So this will be more of a "love letter" rather that a chance to deal with the contempt that he created with the prequel trilogy?

I was hoping for the latter.
  • Episode III was good. Actually I think Episode III was good enough that I forgive him for the first 2. It wasn't perfect and Hayden had... Acting problems... But I thought it was worth it.
  • greggorybasore
Hell yeah. Watching Episode III I felt that same manic glee and and excitement that I did as a child watching the originals in theaters. It made suffering through episodes I & II worth the effort.

Even though I did lose a bit of my jubilations with Vader's "NOOOOO" bit at the end.
  • jack
I agree. I could even argue it's better than A New Hope. Ewan McGregor and Ian McDiarmid totally make that movie work.
  • joker93
Completely agreed. Wow, and I thought I was the only one to think that
  • jank
Okay, just to get the inevitable out of the way: Old Lucas rules. New Lucas sucks.

I feel like i've seen this countless times before. Personally getting a little tired of these Star Wars/Lucas based films. And that trailer didn't look like it brings anything new to the table. This may have been more effective say... about 4 years ago... before the onslaught of parodies and bashing.

Gaiman's involvement is the only thing that keeps me remotely intrigued.
