The Last Airbender

I’m not sure if I’m alone in feeling this way, but I currently consider M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender one of my most anticipated films of 2010. As a fan of the original TV series, I’ve been consistently impressed with what we’ve seen of the film so far — particularly the teaser and some recent photos. Casting issues aside, I’ve gotten the sense that Shyamalan really gets what makes the series so great. The LAT’s Hero Complex blog recently got a chance to speak with M. Night about the film, and he reveals some interesting details on what led him to choose the project.

He says that it was his 7-year old daughter who hooked him on the series:

“She made us watch as a family and all four of us were hooked, “ Shyamalan said. “I was like, ‘This would make a killer movie.  And my wife who really has been kind of in neutral about my career was insane about it. Insane about it: ‘You have to do it. This is it. This is the one.’ ”

The project does indeed seem perfectly suited to Shyamalan. I’ve always been a fan of his visual style, but his screenwriting has gotten increasingly suspect over the years. He’s still tackling the script for Airbender, but at least has to remain somewhat true to the original series. It’s also much more light-hearted than his increasingly morose (or in The Happening’s case, hilarious) projects over the last few years, which should hopefully be a good change of pace for him.

It also marks the first time we get to see him tackle elaborate fight scenes wuxia-style, and I’d love to see how his visual style translates to action choreography.  We got a taste of it with the teaser — which featured Aang (Noah Ringer) performing a bo-staff form while showing off his powers in a glorious long take.

Shyamalan goes on to say that he was also drawn to the Buddhist philosophy in the series, and that he sees similar elements in The Matrix and Star Wars:

“Aang himself needs to find balance to be the Avatar and to master each of these elements,” the director said. “We get to see the process of someone mastering themselves through the three seasons to get to peace.”

“In the first ‘Matrix,’ you realize that what you’re seeing is all false,” Shyamalan said. “Those are really ancient ideas. Basic old, old religion. This has that as well. So if you go on the journey and you’ll feel that epiphany on top of a great roller-coaster ride. It’s going to be something.“

This is a great animated series. I think the whole Airbender story could really only be told through animation because of the depth they take the characters, the action scenes, and the awe of living in a world with elemental abilities. I think the live action is just going to ruin it for fans and newbies alike. Water shooting out of someones hands is just going to look ridiculous. (With a twist from reynaldo's point)- I also hate that hollywood is taking our childhood stuff like street fighter and alvin & the chipmunks, etc. and re-doing them instead of coming up with new ideas. But now this! shessh. This director has had so much crap as is that this movie is going down anyway. As a hardcore airbender fan i'm gunna end up watching this damn film, but hopefully it won't be a total bust
  • Reynaldo
What is happening with Hollywood!!? First Street Fighter, Dragon Ball Evolution and now Avatar the Last Airbender. Why are they whitewashing films like this??? I really hate racist movies so I'm not gonna watch this.
  • scotland3d
Hmm. I wonder why they dropped the word Avatar from the title?
  • Cameron claimed the title because his terrible movie was in production long before the TV show ever existed.
  • Nero
Why do you think this film would drop the word Avatar from it's title?
There might be a $2 billion dollar reason.
  • scotland3d
Sarcasm isn't lost on you, is it?
Or maybe it just doesn't transfer well in text.

Either way, I was joking. I know fine well why they dropped the name Avatar from the promotional work.

Did I miss the references to Star Wars or something?????????????
  • Regardless of any bad picture Shyamalan has made before, the man still made "Unbreakable." Which suffices to say he has the capacity to make a great film.

Though I may not call this my most anticipated movie of the year, I'll admit that this is going to be an interesting year, particularly due to this picture (having the potential to be big and great, as much as it can fail), Tron Legacy (a cult-classic originally just for the geek croud, getting a sequel which will undoubtedly bring it into the mainstream) and Scott Pilgrim (Edgar "Cornetto" Wright, the greatest comedic director ever, paired with Michael "Cardboard Box" Cera, for the lead) and other movies.

    It'll be an interesting year.
  • Well then I guess we will just have to wait and see. But I doubt it.

Hi, Devindra, haven't you promise to talk abot the new FMA on the /Filmcast? I'm still waiting..
  • Spiderfan
Looks good and I am glad they have a director who is passionate about the source material, not some hack from Hollywood. Shyamalan did some great work in the past but got stuck in a rut. It's nice to see him seeking fresh ground.
  • Great post Devindra. I'm a huge Shyamalan fan and I'm greatly looking forward to this as well. He's gotta make up for "The Happening"
  • David
After the Happening, I can't say I'm looking forward to anything this guy does. And I loved The Sixth Sense (which I'm now pretty convinced he didn't really write -- not in the form that got filmed).
  • Vegapunk
I'm not excited for this. Comparing this movie to Star Wars or The Matrix I feel is a little ambitious of him, for what he's been doing. Really though, I hope it does well, for his sake. Shyamalan doesn't seem to be able to handle Hollywood well, as ever since he made it big, his films have come out mostly sub par.

Sadly the teaser is what put me off and made it clear that M. Night didn't get the character of Aang. In the teaser he wields a bo staff and does so with an amazing, yet somehow awkward, amount of choreography and an even greater amount of energy to... put out a few candles at a time? It may be a silly and even nit picky thing to question, but Aang is the Avatar and his primary mastered element is air. The teaser, with how it was executed, just didn't capture Aang at least for me. Still hoping and wanting this film to prove me wrong. The series is fantastic and I think M. Night and his family's enthusiasm for a live-action film adaptation is very well founded. I just hope he captured the characters faithfully to make up for the terrible casting.
  • I'm pretty sure that's his glider he's swinging around.
  • Brawler
Yah, I have a feeling (and finally, somebody who is actually discussing the movie and not Shyamalan's film career) that he's going to make Aang too serious... I mean, in the show half the charm of Aang's character came from not only his acceptance of others but his childish charm, that one glow that even the most bastardly of men could understand and get behind.
  • brainpoo
I really agree with what both of you have said. My Wife said it as soon as the teaser finished "Aang is way too slow". And that wasn't it totally, it's like you said, he just felt awkward. And to use all of that energy to blow out candles, i'm not sure if it was meant to symbolize the fire nation or 'look what he'll have to blow out and he doesn't even know it'. What made no sense to me, was is *Spoiler* this when the Fire Nation originally attacks the Aangs people? NO - because Aang wasn't there. So what is this exactly, purely made for the teaser? It makes no sense otherwise.
  • Nero
Yeah they were just original scenes for the teaser. Don't blow out your brain thinking about it for too long.
  • Jim
I'd like to know where that image at the top came from and if there's a higher resolution of it.
  • topheavy
I wish to compare Shyamalan to Uwe Boll. Thank you.
  • You can say anything, but it helps to back up your statements with reasoning and logic ;)
  • Nero
    Doesn't mean it's true.
  • luke_a
Sorry, pass. After three increasingly terrible films, M. Night is officially dead to me. And I don't see him. So I literally could care less about this and will avoid it.
  • Nero
    Thank you Luke_a.
    Short but pointless.
  • Walrus
Oh noes. Didn't he make Lady in the Water for his daughter as well???
  • rah
I've been waiting for the real avatar film for so long I know it will not suck this is what m.night needed a good story to work with
  • JPX
Oops, sorry about screwing that up. This is what I meant to write, "I’m not sure if I’m alone in feeling this way, but I currently consider M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender one of my most anticipated films of 2010." Uh, yes, you are alone in feeling this way. The guy made one half-decent film a decade ago and has been shooting pretentious balnks ever since. Every Shyamalan film could be distilled down to a 22 minute (sub-par) Twilight Zone episode. The fact that you are excited about his latest, which is sure to suck based on past results, makes me question you as a film fan.

Come down from your pedestal sir and take the dildo out of your ass.
  • Yes, because clearly I'm the only one in the world who liked Unbreakable or most of Signs ;)
  • Derek
Don't let them get you down, Devindra. Personally, I really enjoy your slightly offbeat taste, and I tend to agree with most of your comments on /filmcast. It is clear that you try to reserve judgment until you've seen the final project, which is rare in the world of film news.

I'm also highly anticipating The Last Airbender. Despite his stagnant career as of late, we all know that Shyamalan is capable of producing a quality film; Unbreakable was amazing. He is not blind to criticism, and I think he knows that this is his chance to re-establish himself as a legitimate director. Not to mention, the source material is great, and M. and his family obviously have a passion for it.
  • Yah, I think Shyamalan is just an interesting figure because we know he can make good movies, but his ego or otherwise prevents him.
  • Prat
It makes you question him as a film fan?
Wow, fuck you. That was pretty damn pretentious.
  • JPX
That doesn't make me pretentious at all. He runs an internet film site, which suggests that he knows something about film. For him to get excited about an M. Night film despite M. Night's terrible track record makes me question his judgement. Oh yeah, and fuck you.
  • mooseday
Airbender = farts. Sorry, I just can't keep that out of my head
  • Nero
I can keep it out of my head because I never think about it.
  • IYFreak
Eek! I can't wait, the end of Avatar or "Last Airbender" was so epic, Lol for no reason. I got chills from it, it was so creepy for a Animated series to do that. Im still kinda upset about the castin but if the movie is good I'll get over it.

(Also I'm still a little mad about the casting. They have 4 nations. They could have made it white, Asian, Middle Eastern/Indian and Native American if they didn't want to keep it all asian) <-------------Also am I the only thinking that having races go against eachother in different nations could be a bad idea, as in start alot of trouble o__O
  • Enthropii
Definitely one of the most anticipated for the year.
  • wonka bar
No thanks Shyamalan, I'm just waiting for "Devil". There is a good reason why Disney eventually dumped him...his scripts eventually began to suck. But, i am intrigued by "Devil"...i hope he turns it around with this movie.
  • Ryan
Which is a good thing why he's not mostly writing this THANK GOD its the actual creators of the show writing it.
  • Nero
Excited about a film he's only producing?
  • wonka bar
Check again, IMDB shows that Shyamalan wrote the story for "Devil".
  • Nero
Big deal. Mike and Bryan wrote the story for Avatar but M. Night wrote the screenplay for this film. Last Airbender is all M. Night's.
  • Blake
Avatar is not only one of the best animated shows of all time, but also one of the best shows. Ever.
  • Yes, it certainly is.
  • As someone who knows very little about the originals, the casting is not something I'm even remotely bothered by - besides, the main character seems perfectly cast to me. I actually enjoyed The Happening, but I did dislike The Village immensely. But one of my favorite films ever is Unbreakable, and with that in mind I'm well aware Shyamalan has what it takes if he has the right material. I for one can't wait to see this film.
  • Unbreakable is highly underrated. Some of the stuff he did in that movie were seriously masterful. (Hospital scene comes to mind)
  • The trailer is terrific. It is creating lot of curiosity.I am looking foward for this movie.
  • Shyamalan lost me with "the happening". I was an apologist for even his most suspect movies. Now? I'm about as excited to see this movie as I am to discover the aroma of a late night muffled couch fart. (not very). Although I am looking forward to his gandhi reboot starring mark wahlberg.
