Joe Johnston Offers Small Captain America Update

zz31f4e9a4

The Wolfman director Joe Johnston recently did an interview with Film Journal, and gave a new update on his next project, the Marvel comic book adaptation of The First Avenger: Captain America.

“We’re in prep,” Johnston says. “Rick Heinrichs is production-designing and we’re set up down in Manhattan Beach [California]. It’s the part of the process that I love the most,” he enthuses. “We have eight or ten really talented artists, and we all just sit around all day and draw pictures and say, ‘Hey, wouldn’t it be cool if we could do this?’ It’s that phase of the production where money doesn’t matter: β€˜Let’s put all the greatest stuff up on the wall and [then later] see what we can afford.’” The film, he says at this early stage, will begin “in 1942, 1943″ during World War II. “The stuff in the ’60s and ’70s [comic books] we’re sort of avoiding. We’re going back to the ’40s, and then forward to what they’re doing with Captain America now.”

That’s all he said about Captain America, but you can read the whole interview over on filmjournal.com. Thanbks to our friends at Screenrant for the tip. The Fan art you see above was created by todarkknightbatfan.

this is the first time that "the wolfman" director is helming capt. america... I now fear for the future.

p.s. capt. america has zero relevance today. sad, but true.

Captain America is the man, if the movie is done right it is going to be awesome, its about time we got some pride back in this country, cause Obama is not helping
  • John
yes.....Cap is the man, but even Cap would not bad mouth a President even if Cap did not agree with his policies. and Cap would say this country does have pride!

    besides...........IT'S ONLY A MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!
  • david
Ive always thought captain america was so propaganaish. I think its meant to be. From what im learning lately. A kid joins the army. gets made into a super soldier. is told to go be captain america. Boost moral for his sides soldiers. I hope thats the case anyway. would make it less chessy.

marvel was also behind the fantastic 4
  • Based on what Johnston said, here's how i'm expecting the Captain America and Avenger movies to mesh...

Johnston's First Avenger: Captain America movie will be a WWII film about the origin of Cap and mixture some of the early Cap storylines. By the end of the movie, Cap will be frozen in suspended animation. The Avengers movie will be the discovery and revival of Captain America similar to the Avengers #4 storyline, but set nowadays.

I think this is the best and most ideal way to integrate the old Cap story and an Avengers movie(s) set nowadays. It'd be cool if Johnston's Cap movie had a post-credits easter egg scene with with Cap being discovered--either by random ppl or by a Tony Stark/Nick Fury/Thor crew. Marvel loves those little bonus scenes, and that would eliminate 30 minutes of awkward transitioning in the Avengers movie.

Some hypothetical Avengers sub-plotlines: Cap comes back and is sort of a big deal, gets lots of media attention, etc. Tony Stark holds a small grudge against Cap because he's stealing a lot of attention (maybe Cap gets down with Scarlett's Black Widow or Gwenyth). Stark sort of doubts his effectiveness in battle because he's from the 40's and, well, Ironman is a modern day human weapon machine. RDJ could pull off some funny sarcastic insults ("He's got a shield, I've got rockets on my wrists!"). Not a very hostile relationship, just something to provide plot sublines and opportunities for comedy. Eventually Cap proves himself in battle (maybe with some help from current tech) and he and Ironman lead the Avengers to victory.

I love Cap, and I hope they pull this movie off. Marvel has been good so far, and it continues.

whoever is chosen to hold the shield will make or break CA

You guys actually have hope for this trash?

Joe Johnston is directing, it's already bound to suck.
  • Ellie
I'm totally for a Captain America movie.
But, if only, the guy who plays Captain America is actually in the Avenger's Movie.
  • mobbdeep
Ed Brubaker's take on Cap has been great, especially the WW2 flashbacks with Bucky and The Invaders. Red Skull, Baron Zemo, giant robots, laser canons, the fantastic grounded in reality. It has the tone of Saving Private Ryan mixed with The Rocketeer.
  • NappyP
"wouldn't it be cool if we could do this?". That sounds like he is just gunna pick a few cool things to look at and connect them by this hindrance called a plot.

This sounds like a bad idea.
  • zoey
    theyre ignoring the 60s cap?
    60s cap was ww2 also.
better not ignore the red skull.
cap vs the nazis and friggin red skull is all i want.
  • TVReviewsion
You know who I just decided I want to play Cap? Joshua Jackson (Peter on Fringe). He's a good actor. I think he could play the role well.
  • brainpoo
Yes, Ed Brubaker's Captain America is great. I like what Captain America stands for - which isn't always what his country is currently standing for.
  • Is the picture used in this article just the medal of honor airborne video game box art with different color patterns, and the shield?
  • Sidewalkgod
Read "The Infinity Gauntlet". The entire Marvel Universe takes on Thanos, who has the power of God and they die. The last standing is Captain America, a mere human. He walks up to Thanos and says "You can not claim victory until as long as I am standing."

    THAT is Captain America
  • Yes...lol but my question had nothing to do with Captain Americas character...it was merely the art for the article. Although I really need to read the Infinity Gauntlet, and thanks for the information.
  • Sidewalkgod
Yeah sorry about that. I hit reply instead of new comment. But yeah check out The Infinity Gauntlet. It also has a really good underlining plot with Wolverine and Hulk.
  • Rev Rick White
Joe Johnston as in ILM Joe Johnston that use to work as a concept artist and matte painter?
  • exorcissy72@yahoo.com
    Yeah, and directed The Rocketeer.
  • Chirag Bajaj
I wonder if they'll show Hulk in this movie. Since he released Cap from his long-sleep, maybe he should make a cameo, or they could just show that deleted scene(which I highly doubt).
  • pimpnerd88
What version of Cap are you readin, son? It was Namor who rescued Cap from his frozen state. Hulk will be in an Avengers movie, according to Kevin Feige.
  • angelo
i think hes talking about the movies, in which bruce banner runs into captain america in that deleted scene of the incredible hulk.
  • Soundwave_17
To anyone who thinks Captain America is Cheesy, Read Mark Millar's Civil War.
  • nice disqus.
  • Ozy
And to add something constructive: (Sorry for the double post, I noticed the lack of anything constructive in the comment above AFTER I posted it.)

Uhm, Captain America. After reading Civil War and seeing how bad ass and real the character could be portrayed, I'm interested in a movie. So bring it on.
  • Ozy
Now, for some geeky insight: that picture up there of Captain America is actually a photoshopped version of the game Medal of Honor: Airborne's cover art.

    Tsk, tsk, Peter. Tsk tsk.
  • It's pretty awesome art.
  • fanboy_d
But he's wearing a parachute. Parachutes are for girls :/
  • Oh, well. I've lost my head, then!
  • Am I only one that doesn't want a 'Captain America' film (well not now anyway...)? I'd rather see 'The Avengers' go into production as soon as possible rather than this (or another superhero film) as they will both no doubt take years to come to fruition anyway...
  • papasanchez
I liked the sound of the direction this film was taking and if I'm gonna be honest, I'm still psyched. I haven't seen wolfman yet, so I can't comment. Anyway, J.J took over as director and these re edits sound like studio interference to me, but I know nothing, really. I'm just a geek in his late twenties with too much time in his hands. Sound familiar?

    Good luck J.J.
  • FRH
how do i become one of those artists, joe johnston ?
  • FriedGold
Make something that makes a shit load of cash or find hard evidence you're related to him or a close personal friend. That's how it worked for everybody else.
  • moviefan
well cap is only in early stages and i am sure marvel studios wont let their director screw around with things. look how good things have been so far for marvel studios films. i am sure cap will be fine.
  • [A]
"We have eight or ten really talented artists".. this is the kind of thing that makes me wonder how much these guys lie
  • brainpoo
agreed - seems funny he doesn't know how many are siting around that table with him.
  • exorcissy72
They might not be sitting around said table yet. He could be talking about potential artists or some days there are eight artists there other days nine, some days ten. I don't think saying a non specific number is any indication of lying.
  • fourtypres
this flick is fucked if it has "The Wolfman" director. How many reshoots/reedits has that trash had? How many years will it be pushed back AFTER filming too???
  • ZiM
So I take it you've seen Wolfman?
  • Based on what I've read/the history of the project, Johnston was actually brought in to "Wolfman" well after Romanek, so he was mainly in charge of the reshoots/re-edits and other post-production work. Basically Joe Johnston should probably get an asterisk next to his directing credit
  • Slatters
Captain America is cheesy as fuck.
  • capawesome
He really is. I never understood his following. Much less his retarded-looking costume. Artists today have tried their best to dull down the design of his costume. But it's so cheesy looking even when duller colors and military attachments.
  • hshadows
    In appearance only...

If anyone reads Ed Brubaker's Captain America or Mark Millar's Civil War or Ultimates then you KNOW that they can make Cap as bad@$$ as any other superhero and then some. Favourite Cap line? In Ultimates when Kleiser tells Cap to surrender and Cap says as he beats the guy to death, "Surrender??!! You think the letter on my head stands for France?"
  • I think it's the whole "No. You move" speech that really sells him as a prime superhero.
  • Cy_ed
    hey i love that line.
  • capawesome
haha, case in point. That line was so fucking cheesy.
  • freemachine
Not to mention that the line makes little sense. I get the intended insult, but I doubt anyone would mistake the letter "A" as standing for France. If someone were to trying to sell me on Captain America, this is definitely not the line to quote.
  • Bruce
    Indeed it was.
