Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

Universal Pictures has released their 2010 line-up, which finally includes a release date for Edgar Wright’s live-action adaptation of Brian Lee O’Malley’s graphic novel series Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. The film, which stars Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Alison Pill, Brandon Routh, and Jason Schwartzman, will be released Summer 2010 on August 13th.

This gives Wright and crew a chance to promote the film at Comic-Con in San Diego (they were unable to attend the 2009 con due to the intense shooting schedule). The film is scheduled to go head to head with Sylvester Stallone’s action throwback The Expendables and Julia RobertsEat, Pray, Love. The first of which seems like a real conflict. I’m thinking the characters from Wright’s Hot Fuzz might be more interested in seeing the former.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World recently test screened in Las Vegas to really positive response. You can read some thoughts from those in attendance, here.

Scott Pilgrim here, no question. No offense to Sly & Co, but I've been waiting for Pilgrim for a long time now as I'm a huge fan of the books, Wright, Cera, the musicians involved... It's just all too perfect. I'm sure both will do well...

"2 tickets fot the expendables please...one for me and one for my hard-on"

Yeah, I'm not sure Universal's thought this through entirely, though maybe they're giving the teens not old enough to get into Expendables an option. Still, the week after is relatively lacking in competition (Priest, a Screen Gems action/horror movie starring Paul Bettany, is the only wide release set for that date right now), and even though it'd mean waiting another week I think the 20th would be a better move financially.

Yeah, if I had to choose between which to see opening day, I'd choose Scott Pilgrim in a heartbeat. No f'in way I'm missing it.

I don't even know what the hell "Scott Pilgrim" is. And it doesn't really matter since it's probably gonna end up turning into "Michael Cera as Michael Cera in Michael Cera playing an awkward teenager: The Movie".

The Expandables on the other hand.....dohoho. You're gonna need a raw steak and a jug of beer to truly enjoy it, though.
  • Dude.
Scott Pilgrim is directed by Edgar Fucking Wright.

To anyone saying "District 9," please keep in mind that that movie only had to compete against GI Joe, a "tentpole" that was given wide clearance by most but wound up delivering fairly mediocre box office performance.

That weekend also happens to be the second weekend for The Other Guys and the third for The Adjustment Bureau. That's a load of product for the action audience to pick over the "weird" movie with Michael Cera.

How much did the top three films have to split between them on that weekend last year? 77 million. This year, how much of that gets soaked up by Matt Damon, Whalberg/Ferrell, Stallone/Statham/Schwarzenegger/Everybody before there's any for the Michael Cera picture?

Here's a question: how much are they getting paid at Universal not to think about any of this when they schedule their releases?

I'm pretty pumped for Scott Pilgrim, but the public really does not seem to have much love for Michael Cera at this point.

Terrible move on Universal's part. The Expendables is going to be on everybody's RADAR, once the marketing begins. This is a movie with every action star from the past couple decades (including Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger) up against a movie with Michael Cera.

It's not too late to move to a more amicable date like the 27th, two weeks later. I wouldn't count on that, though. This is the same studio who sent Hellboy II to die the week before The Dark Knight.

Of course, the 27th (or the 20th) is also where Fox should be releasing Predators, instead of the week before INCEPTION. Now that Fox has acquired Machete, maybe they'll drop it on 8/13 too. Let's make sure none of this year's interesting action projects make it out alive.

    well that's my birthday.

i don't celebrate but hey, looks like i'm going to this year.

That is the sadest thing i have ever read.

Expendables seems mildly enjoyable at best. I have a sinking feeling it won't deliver on the ridiculousness everyone is hoping for. The Expendables reminds me of one of those rap songs where twenty all-star rappers throw down on a track and end up canceling each other out to create a boring song.

As for dollars and cents, I agree with TotallyNotNick. The cinema hordes could go either way depending on marketing.

Everything about Scott Pilgrim thus far is more worthy of high anticipation.

Please. Do you really want to see tired old guys, juiced on steroids, say bad one liners written by the same guy who brought us Doom: The Movie,

    OR

Would you rather be watching something from the best comedic director in the world, who also happens to know how to direct awesome action sequences and made Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz?

I don't know jack about Scott Pilgrim, but Edgar Wright is directing and that's enough for me. And one big helping of No Thanks to The Expendables.

Edit: Also, look at that picture up there. THERE"S A FLAMING F***ING SWORD!

Do you really want to see Michael Cera play Michael Cera.....again?

Or do you want to watch 2 hours of rugged manliness and testosterone overload?
  • Cyberdyne
Do you want to watch a lame movie or

    THE BEST FUCKING THING EVER!!!!!1!1!

    way to argue.
  • Justin Jump
Whoah! A flaming sword?? That's so off-kilter and wild! Dude...a flaming sword? That's all I need to see! I'm buying eight tickets right now!

Corny. You condemn The Expendables for 'bad one-liners' but get hyped on one picture for Scott Pilgrim because it's got a sword on fire? Doesn't make much sense to me.
  • freemachine
    win
  • Oh... shite.

...Well, that'll be the first weekend I watch 2 movies in a day.
  • Hannibal
Yeah dude, that was my first thought too. I'll watch the kids prance around in Scott Pilgrim as an appetiser and then for the main course of beefcake the real man's movie straight after.
  • henrik4075
Definitely watching Scott Pilgrim over The Expendables. I read the script to The Expendables, and it was not very good.
  • kure
i really dont get you people in america, why cant you watch both movies.i am pretty sure you are not so damn poor
  • Tetsuo_Man
Person commenting about movies = an American? What, did you HACXORZ his IP address to find out where he lives?

Internet people are from everywhere. You're stupid.
  • Jamieson
It's not about money. It's about supporting a movie. Talking about it with your friends. Some people think they HAVE to see certain movies. They feel obliged. I don't really understand it, but its whatever; People are douche bags.
  • ignorance
    shut up
  • MarkoP
I wouldn't be surpised if one of these movies gets bumped to August 20th since there isn't much competition there. In fact, wasn't The Expendables going to be released on August 20th?
  • Won't be much of a contest. Expendables it is.
  • Max
its Michael Cera VS Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis, and Arnold Schwarzenegger

i think i will go with the Expendables
  • After August 13th, I will be busy every weekend seeing this film. But it's Summer Break, so it'll probably be everyday. I'll have to fit The Expendables somewhere in there.
  • TotallyNotNick
Dpending on marketing, I can see Scott Pilgrim slowly becoming a buzz movie a la District 9 and Inglorious Basterds.
  • Justin Jump
That's good double billing. Nerd movie for the scrawny girly nerds, and a macho HGH movie for the badass tough guys.

I kid, but seriously, I just don't get this Scott Pilgrim shit.
  • Yazzhole
    I second that.
  • Poland626
    Double Feature anyone?
  • dagreenman18
