Is Avatar 2 Gearing Up For Pre-Production?

avatar-jc

As James Cameron’s Avatar overtakes Titanic to become the biggest box office success of all time, winning Golden Globes and getting ready for a possible Oscar sweep, rumor has it that pre-production might be gearing up on a sequel to his 3D sci-fi epic. I have received word, from a source who has provided /Film with some good tips in the past, that technical crew members have already begun to be hired for Avatar 2.

According to the source, some behind the scenes technical crew have signed on for three to five year contracts, just in case it runs long. While I’m unable to confirm this report with a second source, this bit shouldn’t come as a huge surprise as Cameron has always said that he hopes to create an Avatar trilogy. And with the box office receipts and awards, you can be sure that Fox is pushing for a sequel. But will this really be Cameron’s next film?

Jeez... what are all these Jim Cameron haters doing on this page! If they can't stand the sight of him, go suck on Pretentious bastards like Ang Lee or jerk of to Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind. I genuinely have no idea what you guys are doing here, hanging around spoiling others' fun.

Avatar is phenomenal and Cameron is THE God of movie making as far as we are concerned. And movie are supposed to be magical. I mean I love Hurt Locker or Shaw shank Redemption, citizen Kane for that matter. But if you can rivet audience to their seat and make them immerse in your movie, while at same time keeping them entertained, you are a Good movie maker. And if you've mastered it to the point where all your movies are Damn good, you are the King. And Cameron is the only one who has done it.

Please don't say others have done it. Movies are supposed to entertain, and if they fail that category, then it's the failure of the director. My another fav director Tarantino missed the title by his Kill-bill 2. Forget box-office records, if all your movies are entertaining, then you are the master.

Well i thought the movie ended so AWSOME! and when they make another one then they might kill it :-/ i mean now what there's gonna be another war?? Well i might be wrong..:-/
  • dogless
Oh, fuck me. Does this mean I have to hear about James fucking Cameron for another 2 years. Balls.
  • Max
i might watch this second one if it takes place Endor and Sam Worthington becomes an Ewok

Unless A2 completely bombs, I suspect we're in for at least two sequels, and possibly something for small screens.

Think of how much cash they have in the pieces needed to make an Avatar film. Not just the hardware, but all those 3D objects. A1 may have cost $750M to make, but unless they take it to an entirely different world, A2+ should be much cheaper.

If he makes an R rated Avatar, then it's ok, and this time with script. :D
  • Peter R
Eh leave it alone. First one was pretty fun. Not much more than popcorn eye candy though. Not really clamoring for more blue Sam Worthington.

I would be much more interested in Battle Angel ...hope it doesn't get put on the back burner.

If Cameron is doing Avatar 2, or whatever it will be called, next I am thinking it will not take that long since all the tech is in place already.

I am just guessing it will turn out like the Matrix sequels where after going back the second time....realized it was more the awesomeness of the visuals and freshness of the whole thing rather than the product itself that drew you in. But hey I could be wrong and it could be Terminator 2...but I doubt it.

When you beat out the top spot twice in a row, people will assume your next big picture will break that record a third time. There is more pressure on James Cameron's Avatar 2 than there is on Chris Nolan's Batman 3.
  • fcr
lets kidnap george lucas so he dont come even close to james cameron while he makes this trilogy!!
  • I can't help thinking this is a mistake. Sequels are so rarely as good as, let alone better than, the original.
  • m4st4
Cameron's sequel history: Aliens & T2, enough said.
  • In that case, let's hope the Pandora saga stops at 2.
  • theJOker
McG is already plotting "Avatar: Salvation."
  • papasanchez
This is amazing. Knew they were gonna do a trilogy but it's still good "news". I'm taking my dad to see the "current" I.e "real" film, next week. High five to some father son bonding. Yeaaaah! I was also interested in using " several times today.

He'll shit himself with awe when he enters pandora.

As much as I'd love to see Battle Angel I can't wait for Avatar 2. I've already seen 5 times and going back again for another viewing this weekend. Every time I've gone I've paid for reluctant friends who hate the whole sci-fi genre to experience the movie for themselves and then pass judgement. Not only has this movie changed their minds about the fantasy/sci-fi genre but they've also had paid for a second and even 3rd viewing. And for all you Avatar/James Cameron haters out, put up or shut up. Unless you can produce anything this man has in the past or present, shut the fuck up and get back in your boxes. Films are made for entertainment purposes and not in depth character and issue driven exploration. If you're into that sort of stuff, get on your high horses and giddy up along to a Jane Campion, Roman Polanski, Woody Allen, Ang Lee movie or other directors of their ilk. Better yet, pick up a book by Dickens, Austen, Tolstoy, Joyce or Proust.
On a further note, how the hell did The Hurt Locker win the best picture at the Producers Guild? Just what we needed, another boring take on the whole Iraq issue. After all, didn't Cameron PRODUCE a stunning movie that will now open a whole new era in movie making? The Guild can go suck it as far as I'm concerned. They haven't honored the right person for PRODUCING an amazing piece of work and who's taken it upon himself to PRODUCE the technology to realize his vision. Technology that is now been considered by other A-list directors for future use. He's opened a Pandora's Box (no pun intended) that WILL change the way we expect film to be made. Kudos to you James Cameron for having a vision and in being pro-active in realizing it. So what if the story line was somewhat weak in Avatar, as least you stuck to your guns, didn't settle for second best and have been vindicated for it at the box office where it’s supposed to count. Studios spend money to make money don’t they? Well, once again, you’ve more than delivered the goods.

shit dude. i really dont get the hard-on for avatar. Yes, it was a beautiful movie, and yes, i was entertained. but best picture? please. without the cgi, it would have been a slightly-above-average film. shitty dialogue, unbelievably predictable, and the blatant deux-ex-machina, which in storytelling isn't really good. the hurt locker was intelligent and my god did you say it was boring? dude it was a movie about people who DIFFUSE BOMBS! how did u think that was boring? as for you telling cameron haters off because most of us havent done anything like what he's done, come on. just because someone doesnt have the resources or the talent to do something someone else did doesnt mean that they're cant recognize the value (or lack thereof) of it. plus, hes just so full of himself that it causes me physical pain to see him win an award.

btw, u realize all the authors and directors you mentioned to be all "elitist" and stuff like that are all widely considered to be masters of their craft, right?
  • it looked pretty. but then so does a mountain.

if you want to talk about the actual film itself, the hurt locker was an incredible film, whilst avatar was the lion king plus some guns plus tellling americans that being nice to the environment is nice.

jesus. it was a fucking kids film. and they had weird tail genital things.
  • Weyland_Yutani
I'd assume that Jake has to use an avatar to return back into his human form. It only makes sense. Zoey will go human as well. You know they will want them on screen if they are set to star again. You can probably count on Quaritch coming back bigger and badder as well, maybe a clone or can see him going full, coffee drinking robot.
  • dagreenman18
No! bad Cameron! Go do Battle Angel Alita!
  • Dirtsandwich
I'd like to see Cameron make Rendezvous with Rama. That would be way sweet in 3D. And don't forget The Fantastic Voyage 3D is still on the table.
  • I think James Cameron should go ahead and make a "Halo" movie. Peter Jackson can co-produce and co-write.
  • word.
  • Dirtsandwich
With Weaver gone Michael Biehn might be reconsidered. JC said the second one will probably take place on Pandora.
  • Can we even begin to imagine what kinda money Avatar pulls in opening weekend??
  • Without-a-doubt Fox want this. Cameron could demand just about anything at this point, I'm sure.
  • Justin Jump
I have complete faith in James Cameron. It will be phenomenal trilogy.
  • Yeah, I'd love it if he did Battle Angel (R-rated) next.
And Avatar 2 after that. The Dive doesn't interest me. At all. And I'm not alone.

But however he does it, it'll be significantly better than the first. After all, he isn't just the king of the world, and pandora... But also the king of sequels!
  • Alita
Also wouldn't mind seeing a nuclear bomb movie from him. Though only after Battle Angel, that takes priority.
  • jcccccccccccccccccccccccccccc
Cameron had a sequel in mind when he wrote Avatar. There are specific scenes in Avatar that will make more sense in the sequel (or so he says). I think he may plan on having RDA go to another moon around Pandora and Jake and the Omaticaya will go there to defend them. There has been rumors there will be another planet introduced in the sequel that is the only way I can see them introducing it. Unless the sequel will be independent of the first movie. I hope not.
  • Kareem
Well Cameron's talked about how disappointed he was in Alien3 killing off the characters of the 2nd film... so I don't think he'd have Avatar 2 introducing us to new characters instead of using the one's we've already met.
  • The Dark Samurai
I wonder what cartoon's script he will adapt for the sequel...that itself will be exciting!
  • dagreenman18
My money is on the Lion King.
  • I'm on board. I saw Avatar for the 3rd time this afternoon and I think it only got better. The visuals are so incredible they literally almost make me want to cry tears of joy. I'll surely be returning to Pandora before it leaves theatres.
  • wow.
    just wow.
  • Pablo
I hope Grace's character can come back in some way
  • She'll be the Obi-Wan Kenobi character within Eywa.
  • I'd be good with Battle Angel, but personally I'm very happy to hear Avatar 2 might be coming sooner rather than later. I'm with everyone else on The Dive.
  • The David Chen
I would rather see Battle Angle, and as GoldFish said NOT THE DIVE, EVER. Cameron wasting months doing a straight up drama doesn't sound appealing to me.
  • GoldFish
I hope not I rather see Battle Angel first then Avatar 2. Also, not the The Dive, ever.
  • waqman
Make Battle Angel first you fucking Quaker Oats lookalike shit! I enjoyed Avatar but I'd rather see him go back to some hard R sci-fi. Let him make time for the Avatar sequel so he can think of a few cool ideas (his sequels have always been cool).
  • i wouldn't mind going back to Pandora. i'm surprised that Cameron even has any idea what he wants to do yet, but whatever.
  • The only reason Avatar took so long was because the technology wasn't available yet.
  • i know, but i thought i read somewhere that he's just kicking around ideas right now. no treatment, no screenplay, hardly anything.
  • Oooooo. I hope they do Secret of Nihm!
  • freemachine
God, I hope so. I simply can't get enough of Pandora.
  • thorofthunder
I just watched Avatar 2 yesterday.

Oh wait... it was called Ferngully.
  • freemachine
You're about a month late with that joke. Nice try anyway. Play again tomorrow.
  • thorofthunder
    Sorry you missed the point.

It wasn't meant to be a joke.
  • kindbuddy
jokes like that aren't funny anymore they were w/ the first Avatar.
  • Jimmy
God, I hope so. I simply can't get enough of Neytiri.
