The Duplass Brothers' Cyrus

We’ve been writing about Cyrus, the new film from the Duplass Brothers, for a while — it was announced last year, shot quickly and is now at Sundance. And until about halfway through this trailer I’d completely forgotten that Jonah Hill was in the film. Then, when he shows up, after just a couple of lines I was floored. Hill looks great in this. Granted, he’s got impressive actors to play against (John C. Reilly and Marisa Tomei) but this might be the film that changes how he’s perceived. Check it out and see if you agree.

Basically, John (Reilly) is a depressed, recently divorced guy who is bordering on total loser-dom. At a party, he manages to hook up with the wildly hot Molly (Marisa Tomei) who, as it turns out, has an adult son. That’s Cyrus (Hill), and he and mom have an interesting relationship that John isn’t entirely comfortable with. But Molly seems otherwise perfect, so what’s a guy to do? Deal with Cyrus.

We’ve known that Reilly can do the loser, and that Tomei is more than versatile enough to nail this one. But as Cyrus, Hill shows off this odd manchild/Travis Bickle quality, and seems to have more depth than we’ve seen from him before. I hope the film fulfills the promise of this trailer.

Here’s the official line on the film:

Alone and acutely depressed, having just learned of his ex-wife’s wedding plans, John can’t believe his luck when he encounters beautiful, charming Molly at a party. The two get along famously and launch a passionate affair, until Molly’s 21-year-old son, Cyrus, enters the scene. Will Molly and Cyrus’s deep and idiosyncratic bond leave room for John? Cyrus becomes a dark, poignant, sometimes hilarious war dance as Molly, Cyrus, and John walk the line between creepy and sympathetic. Each member of this awkward triangle teeters somewhere between bare honesty and furtive manipulation as he or she lets loose all manner of dysfunctionality. The excruciating, delightful fun is seeing where the boundaries ultimately land.

wow what an original story line...
  • Looking pretty freakin' good, check. Human League, check. Film I now want to see, check.

I lol''d at the Shrek in the forest line, other than that I didn't really see too much in Hill from that trailer, I think Reilly looked quite good though. It seemed to be in a bit of a void between indie with humourous dialogue and realist melodrama with some funny moments, it didn't work as a whole for me.
  • Debunker
Jonah Hill is about as funny at Michael Cera.. (That is an insult by the way, to the people that think both of these guys are funny)
Sorry, but stating the obvious in a stupid and idiotic way went out the door when everyone realized that moron Will Ferrell was doing it and stopped seeing his movies. And guys acting Fat, Jolly, and stupid went out when Chris Farrelly passed away.(sorry that Jack Black has not realized this yet)

Since this is a serious role who knows, Jonah may blow everyone away and be good for a change, but the odds are against him if he still acts in anyway that he has done in any of the movies he has been in.

I didn't know there was a third Farrelly brother.

wow Jonah I love you man, but hit the tred get back to superbad weight thats perfect for you.
  • Grim Charles
Replace all that happy music with serial-killer music and you got yourself a horror movie. I mean, come on, there's a moment where Jonah Hill's holding a knife with that look on his face.

Looking forward to this, I like Marc Duplass in The League. Didn't know that he was a filmmaker, I'll have to check out his other flicks now.
  • felix
his films are nothing like the league. it's really hard to get into. there's a reason they're called "mumblecore."
  • freemachine
Marisa Tomei is so friggin' hot! Hotter than lots of girls half her age!!!
  • Rev Rick White
Check out "Before the Devil Knows You Are Dead" and "The Wrestler".

    giggity giggity goo
  • looks okay. if they stay away from the comedy that john c reilly is known for and go to a whole different direction, then its a movie i can see. i want it to be more dramatic for some reason, like funny people but at the same time funny.
  • what a bait-and-switch title.

i thought this movie was going to be a biopic about either Miley Cyrus or her father. perhaps i should get my mind out of the entertainment gutter.

i thought jonah hill lost lots of weight a long time ago! or was that seth rogen.
  • iec
    that was Rogen.

Didn't look bad, but I don't like either of those actors as "serious" actors. Really, they cannot pull it off. Sure, it looks better than Hill's other roles, but "better" doesn't mean "good."

But I'll watch it because I love the Duplass Brothers.

    Isaiah? Is this you?

Oh my God this looks frikn amazing. I'm a big fan of Jonah Hill and many people I know who have the exact same taste's as me in movies hate him.

Granted I am stoned, but that trailer got me excited. The image of Jonah Hill in the kitchen holding the knife made me laugh out loud. It makes me wanna see a full film of him being a psychopath. Or perhaps this film may go there. Judging from the trailer this might be a film that takes a major turn and becomes deadly serious. Or it could be a feel good film. I mix of the two would be good.
  • guywhiteycorngood
I agree it looks pretty good. But what I really came here to say is how does Marissa Tomei keep getting hotter with age?

Interesting that the A Scott Free Productions is producing this.

i was expecting more from the Duplass bros. and their first "big" movie. Meh. I am disappoint. Hopefully this end up being good but I agree with the above statement that this looks like step brothers...the mumblecore version.
  • JeffreYREeser
yeah, i was hoping for something in the same vein as Puffy Chair and Humpday..maybe the trailer is just misleading.
  • ninjaturtle
i wasn't hoping for anything in the same vein as puffy chair. I mean I love the cheap mini dv look of puffy chair and baghead and Im a big fan of Aaron Katz and other mumblecore (such a stupid word) films and filmmakers. I just was really hoping that they would make a "real" movie this time. It still has the look of cheap DV. And they already did the horror movie thats not really a horror movie thing with baghead. dont want to see that again. The duplass bros are my hometown boys (austin tx what up!), but i was just expecting more in every way from their first fully funded big(er) budgeted movie...

more like The Step Father + Step Brothers
  • Michael_W
I like Jonah Hill...alot. I think he is one of the better actors to come out of the Apatow explosion.

That said I hate this trailer. It starts with an interesting premise but all of the character and plot development that is shown here is simply grating, and not in a delightfully dark Cohen bros. sort of way. It simply looks abrasive while at the same time being uninteresting.

But hey! It could just be the trailer.

I like John C. Reilly, but its starting to look like he is getting type cast(ed) into comedy roles. This movie in itself does not look too bad though.

Also Jonah Hill looks (and acts) like a serial killer in this movie. Maybe that will be a twist in the movie, he kills his moms boyfriends.
  • something
the above was not meant to be a reply, sorry
  • ThinkingKap
It's like Step Brothers + Melodrama. Which I'm not saying is bad thing. I'm just saying.
  • Corey
Jonah Hill looks...ok in this. It's good to see he's trying more dramatic (is that the word?) roles.
  • Slatters
I think the last thing Jonah Hill needs to be doing is "growing".
