GAMER
The ADD-infused style that suited writers/directors Neveldine/Taylor so well on the Crank films doesn’t quite work to their benefit in Gamer, a futuristic sci-fi action flick which exposes their shortcomings as filmmakers. The film is a mess, blundering through one set piece to the next, with little sense of what the film as a whole is trying to achieve. There’s something to be said for energy and enthusiasm though, of which they clearly have plenty. The movie remains watchable even when you’re not exactly sure what it is that you’re watching. The mindlessness of the action is balanced against a scathing, cynical depiction of what the world has become, and that angle provides the film with just enough to help separate it from the hordes of other futuristic sci-fi actioners that it so clearly evokes. Also, it has Rocky Balboa’s son playing a character named Rick Rape, and a musical number featuring Michael C. Hall. So, yeah… it has that going for it.
Available on Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: DVD – An audio commentary with writers/directors Neveldine/Taylor and actors Amber Valletta, Alison Lohman, and Terry Crews, an Inside the Game multi-part making-of documentary, a First Person Shooter: The Evolution of Red featurette, and a never-before-seen theatrical trailer cut by the filmmakers. Blu-ray – Includes everything on the DVD, as well as an I-Con Mode interactive feature, Gamer Cheat Codes (interactive specialized scene-specific audio and video commentary accessible throughout the film), and a digital copy of the film.

THE INVENTION OF LYING
I have a hard time believing that this movie is indicative of Ricky Gervais’ intended vision, and not a result of studio meddling. There are glimpses throughout of an ambitious film that’s attempting to achieve something unlike what we’ve seen before, but that half of the movie is balanced rather clumsily against a shallow, hackneyed romance that offers no emotional investment whatsoever. I so would’ve liked to see more of the former, less of the latter. The clever way in which Gervais seeks to examine religion (and in many ways even denounce it) provides the film with many of its more thought-provoking and hilarious moments, and had the film went all the way with those elements, it could have amounted to something rather ingenious. By the film’s end though, it favors sentimentality over subversiveness, and the final result left me a little disappointed.
Available on Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: DVD & Blu-ray – Featurettes (”More Laughter: Corpsing and Outtakes”, “Prequel: The Dawn of Lying”, “Meet Karl Pilkington”, “A Truly “Honest” Making of Featurette with Ricky Gervais”), Ricky and Matt’s Video Podcasts, and deleted scenes. The Blu-ray will also include a digital copy of the film.

WEEDS (SEASON 5)
Attempting to analyze this past season of Weeds would suggest that it’s the type of show that deserves to be analyzed. It’s not. At this point, Weeds has become my “background noise” show. I watch it while I’m eating or scanning the newspaper or taking care of chores. What was once an engaging soap opera has since devolved into a predictably silly one, with each episode offering just enough entertainment value to keep me watching, but not enough to warrant giving it my full attention. Any emotional attachment I may have had to the characters has been withering away since Season 3, as they always seem to make precisely the wrong decisions necessary to prolong a certain subplot or up the drama in one way or another. From a storytelling standpoint, it makes sense. From a viewer sympathy standpoint, it’s just annoying.
Available on Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: DVD & Blu-ray – 7 cast/crew episode commentaries, bloopers, and featurettes (”History of Weed”, “Yes We Cannabis”, “Little Titles by Jenji Kohan”, “Really Backstage with Kevin Nealon”, “Crazy Love: A Guide to the Dysfunctional Relationships of Weeds”, “University of Andy”).

PANDORUM
Had Pandorum followed through on the promise of its first act, it very possibly could’ve amounted to an eerily fun psychological thriller. But the more the mystery unfolds, the less interesting it becomes. Before long, the movie discards its most engaging element in favor of blandly designed monsters that almost immediately suck all of the fun out of the film. Stylistically the film remains appealing, scooting by on its bleak tone and cold, mechanical set design—both of which seem to be deliberately reminiscent of Alien—but they’re not enough to compensate for the film’s unnecessary splicing of two barely connected plot threads, neither of which is effective enough to work on its own.
Available on Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: DVD & Blu-ray – An audio commentary, a World of Elysium: Behind the Scenes featurette, a Flight Team Training Video, deleted and alternate scenes. The Blu-ray will also include a digital copy of the film.

WHITEOUT
Some movies are so unquestionably awful, they don’t even deserve the energy it takes to explain what makes them so awful. Whiteout is one of those movies. Don’t see it.
Available on Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: DVD – Additional scenes. Blu-ray – Includes everything on the DVD, as well as featurettes (”The Coldest Thriller Ever Story”, “Freeze Frame: From Page to Screen”), and a digital copy of the film.

Not Screened

CHE (CRITERION COLLECTION)
Steven Soderbergh is always an interesting filmmaker even when he isn’t a successful one, and based on the exceptionally diverse response that his two-part biopic about Marxist revolutionary Ernesto “Che” Guevara has been receiving since it first screened at Cannes last year, that certainly seems to be the case here as well. At 4 and a half hours total, you’ll have to decide for yourself whether the prospect of an interesting failure is enough to compensate for the demanding running time.
Available on Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: DVD & Blu-ray – Audio commentaries on both films, featuring Jon Lee Anderson (author of Che Guevara: A Revolutionary Life), a Making “Che” documentary, new interviews with Cuban historians as well as participants in the 1958 Cuban Revolution and Che’s 1967 Bolivian campaign, deleted scenes, theatrical trailers, and a booklet featuring an essay by critic Amy Taubin.

SMOKIN’ ACES 2: ASSASSIN’S BALL
The world is full of low-budget DTV sequel cash-ins, and the majority of them are terrible. Odds are, Smokin’ Aces 2: Assassin’s Ball is no different, but with Smokin’ Aces writer/director Joe Carnahan credited as an executive producer and a co-contributor to the story, it’s at least comforting (or unfortunate, depending on the film’s quality) to know he played some part in getting the sequel made.
Available on Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: DVD & Blu-ray – Commentary with executive producer Joe Carnahan and director P.J. Pesce, deleted scenes, featurettes (”Confessions of an Assassin”, “Ready, Aim, Fire: The Weapons of Smokin’ Aces 2″, “Cue the Clown”, “The Bunker Mentality: Designing the Set”), and a gag reel.

  • I prefer Pandorum over Gamer. Gamer was'nt terrible just not what I wanted to see. Though I did thoroughly enjoy seeing Michael C. Hall as someone other than Dexter. He does the "creepy" guys so well. He was the best part of the movie for me. Pandorum was nothing more than a fun sci-fi thriller, and that's what mad it enjoyable.

Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging? Why do I get the feeling that finding out what that's really about would totally ruin the movie I just watched in my head. BTW, would Natalie Portman be willing to eat beef if it was for 'art'?

I've walked away from Weeds after picking through a few episodes of Season 4 and not liking what I saw. Its a frustrating show to enjoy for that very reason that Adam pointed out: the characters always make the wrong decision and very rarely suffer any significant consequences because of it. Plotlines come and go as quickly as Johns to a hooker.

Which blows, since I used to love that show.

Still you could go out and buy a steak, or give the money to charity. I've just never understood blind buying things. I don't want garbage sitting on my movie shelf whether I can afford to waste the $20 or not.
  • son_of_el_topo
There are literally hundreds of movies i would purchase before I even considered purchasing Pandorum.

There are literally hundreds of movies I have bought before Pandorum. I guess spending $20 bucks on a blind buy really doesn't put me out. I can live if I don't like it but it reminds me of Dead Space for some reason and i love that game so I'll take my chances. I can understand you having a problem if I already saw it and knew it sucked but still bought it anyway.

Just picked up Pandorum on blu for only $20. Was going to get Gamer but it was in one of those shitty eco-cases so I said no thank you. It's pretty sad that studios are trying to pass these ridiculously shitty cases off as anything other than a cost cutting tool. It's also fucking retarded that I have to feel up my movies now before I buy them. Seriously, I don't like the fact that I can feel the disc when i press down on a case that's supposed to protect it, it just feels so cheap. Sorry about the rant. Maybe I'm just weird about shit like that.
  • DrLickies
Gamer is one of the worst movies I saw last year, I'm really surprised you gave this a "rent".
  • elharris84
Anyone else angry with Netflix's deal with the devil (in this case, Warner Bros.)? If you want to see Whiteout or The Invention of Lying, you have to flat out buy them, since due to the new deal, they won't be available on Netflix until February 16. .

By the way, Che is worth a watch. Not my cup of tea, but del Toro is quite good in it.

  • Oh boo hoo. After waiting 4 months to watch a movie, you'll have to wait another month. Jeez, have some freaking patience.
  • elharris84
As a consumer, I find it a bit ridiculous that a movie is available to purchase, but not to rent. We're moving backwards apparently. Does anyone remember the days when VHS rentals were only available for rent at first (unless you wanted to spend nearly $100 on them), then released to buy? I would take that situation over this one.

Also, Brad, I have always felt that the wait was too long the way it was between theatrical releases and video releases. Adding an extra month is quite trying for my patience. Personally, I think movies should be put on DVD/Blu-Ray as soon as the theatrical run is over. So, yes, boo hoo, this situation is a bunch of crap.
  • Jlarson
HA! "The film is a mess, blundering through one set piece to the next" but go ahead and rent it.

Slash film recommends that pile of crap Gamer, then doesn't take the time to see Soderbergh's Che.
  • Because we all know how much easier it is to see a movie that was released in 39 theaters over one that was released in 2.5 thousand.
  • cesaria
Che is currently available on Netflix Watch Instantly. What's your excuse now? HUH?
  • International_j
"Che is currently available on Netflix Watch Instantly. What's your excuse now? HUH?"

    Uhh...time. It's a fuckin' long movie
  • #1AdamQuigleyFanboy
Most likely because Che is a period piece from around the second half of the 20th century and we all know how much Adam likes films from around that time (See: Casablanca). Though, it is shot on the Red camera so seeing as it uses somewhat state of the art cameras it could perhaps sway his opinion on the matter.
  • I would definitely suggest renting 'Che' if your able to find four hours of free time. I've always been interested in this period of revolutionary action and Guevara himself and Soderbergh painted a very enjoyable historical portrait, while the cinematography is beautiful at times.

Also, I am also one of those who found 'Pandorum' to be a very suspenseful and engaging Sci-Fi film. While the ending does go a little off track, the first thirty minutes and brilliantly shot, creating a really bleak and quite frightening atmosphere.

I saw Che on IFC just the other day. It was pretty dull and WAY TOO LONG! Che certainly wasn't terrible, just self-indulgent. Pace yourself and watch it over two nights. Weeds Season 5 has to be the worst, though the very ending was pretty great. It seemed to turn down hill in Season 4, after Nancy left Agrestic. Gamer was so so overall, but one Hell of a visual experience. I love N/T's guerrilla-filmmaking style---they are like artists using Day-Glo paint and a camera for a brush.
  • theJOker
WAs WhiteOut really that bad? The cOmmercials looked pretty good.
  • It was! I was sort of excited to see it. I was expecting The Thing but maybe more sci-fi or the opposite, more ground based. What I got was a bank heist in the arctic. Don't.
  • Bull
    no they didn't
  • NappyP
Pandorum was fun, although it was not great. I would buy (or rent) it over Gamer any day.
  • melissa
fyi - the link on the main site doesn't like to the full article. it links back to the main page.
  • sammyjankis
I don't mind including a dvd with a blu ray, but I can not stand flipper discs, twice the chance of an accident. I will stick with the regular Bourne Blu's

Glad to finally have MAGNOLIA on Blu.

I may be in the minority here, but I actually thought Pandorum was better than I expected. Not a great film, but an entertaining one and I thought it had a fairly cool ending.
  • freemachine
I agree regarding Pandorum. Much better than I thought.
  • Kyle C.
You better stop buying Universal movies then because supposedly all of their new releases will be flippers, just like they were with hd-dvd.

I have heard good things from people who have seen Pandorum, I think I might buy the blu, it's only $20. I don't know whether I should get Gamer though as I loved the first Crank but absolutely hated the second one.
  • Cory
You are incorrect - the only titles announced for Universal's new "Blu-ray/DVD combo disc" format are the individual releases of the Bourne trilogy. ALL Universal's other upcoming BD titles (as of 1/19/2010 as I type this) are either plain Blu-ray discs, or Blu-ray and DVD packages where two separate single-format discs are included.
  • Kyle C.
Cool, my bad. I could have swore I read multiple articles saying Universal was going to start doing it along with other studios. I do think it's going to happen to more than just the Bourne trilogy though.
  • Jemaniac
GAMER wasn't as great as CRANK. It wasn't as fun as those movies. Pretty average, really.
