Both Jenna Fischer, from the US version of The Office, and Ricky Gervais, star and co-creator of the UK original, seem to have new acting gigs lined up. Fischer’s will be in a Farrelly Bros. comedy, while Gervais’ is in… the US version of The Office?

Hall Pass is an ‘open relationship’ comedy in which a pair of wives give their husbands permission to stray from the marital bed. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this only becomes an issue when the women too start to sleep with other people. Fischer’s husband will be played by Owen Wilson, and Jason Sudeikis will play the other ‘liberated male’. His wife is yet to be cast - place your bets, please.

An altogether more startling proposition is an appearance by Gervais, and in the character of David Brent no less, in the next season of The Office. Michael Ausiello at EW has two sources pointing roughly at this story, one of whom is Gervais himself:

I heard an unconfirmed rumor earlier today that Ricky Gervais was seriously considering reprising his role as original Office manager David Brent on the U.S. version… about an hour ago, Ricky Gervais took the stage at press tour… and hinted that he might do something with the U.S. Office next season.

Okay, I hope they have fun with this. I’m a fan of the US series and think they’ll probably give Gervais something good to do.

When Carrell leaves/the show ends, it would be an awesome reveal if we were to find out his replacement was David Brent. I mean, Dunder Mifflin is such a poorly run company hiring David Brent would seem reasonable for them.

But I want Gareth to meet Dwight as well!

I stopped watching the US office after the third season I think. It just became a bore and was nowhere near as good as the UK version. But if this is true I will definitely start watching again. It could be amazing.
  • I think I read somewhere that next season would be Steve Carell's last on The Office, but I've alse heard that he loves the show so much that he'd be willing to keep on doing it (yeah, who knows).
Is it unreal to wish for David Brent to be Michael Scott's replacement in the Scranton Branch? :)

I could definitely see Wiig as the other wife. Or perhaps Lake Bell.
  • You just knew that Gervais was going to appear on the American office at some point. Maybe not as Brent but you just knew he would weasel his way in by the finale.
  • Gervais on the US Office? But... won't the Universe implode?

The David Brent/Micheal Scott news really intrigues me. As a big fan of both versions of The Office I really wonder if the writers are going to be able to actually make this funny without feeling forced. I think both shows had/have extremely creative writers but sometimes ideas like this always seem better as a concept then in reality.
  • Ah! another wife swapping series. Any way if the content has lot of comedy then it is worth watching. looking out for a genuine adult comedy. Good luck

Welcome to NBC Steve Carrell, where you only have a job till the old guy wants it back. You will be missed on The Office.

  • These are both interesting tid bits. I'm putting my vote on Kristen Wiig as the second wife. It seems like role and a cast that she'd fit right in with...

As for Gervais on THE OFFICE. Heck yes! A small story arc would be great. Maybe get him to introduce the US to David Brent's dance moves in a Michael Scott/David Brent Halloween dance off...!

    Wiig's a good call.

That will be fun to watch. Ricky Gervais in 'The Office' i mean. I wanna pass on the Farrelly Bros comedy except i'm head over heels in love with Jenna Fisher.
  • Anything with Owen Wilson gets a pass by me these days... Gervais should be good tho.
