LOL: How To Make a Michael Cera Movie

zz520f1078top

It seems like a lot of people I know have gotten tired of Michael Cera’s same-old-act, and the $7 million opening of his new film, Youth in Revolt, seems to suggest it might be more widespread than just a couple of my friends. High Definite has created an infographic showing the paint by numbers steps involved in creating a Michael Cera comedy. I can no longer find the image on the source site, so I’ve included the whole thing after the jump.

that zombie guys movie will redeem him, he suffers from banality.
  • Yes I am
You guys are all dumb. Thank you.

Jesse Eisenberg >>>>>>>>>>>> Michael Cera. Probably smarter too.
  • I guess well see how good of actor Michael Cera is in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World cause i doubt it the same Cera as before.
  • Cyberdyne
strange how such an innocent looking guy can cause such a hate filled flamewar
  • I run TheHighDefinite.com, and while I can't thank /Film enough for the exposure, this was originally from Cracked.com. I gave credit where credit was due on my site in the individual post but my hosting company deleted a weeks worth of my posts.

youth in revolt failed to find an audience because it is not pg13, allthough it would have been ruined if they made it as such. a great film over market appeal should be celebrated.

Yeah, what Sarah said. SHAKE THAT SHIT UP CERA!

If Edgar Wright's gonna stand by Michael Cera, so will I.

    ...For now.

I think the Scott Pilgrim film will open a Pandora box for Michael, then he'll start getting real rolls, and not the same shit over and over.
  • We just need him to play the character one more time for the Arrested Development movie and then he can re-invent himself however he chooses.
  • literally everything in the world is predictable. you're not smart OR funny for realizing it, though the person who created this obviously wants you to think so.
  • dude
    Michel cera WAS NEVER cool!
  • Octoberist
he was dude. have you not seen Arrested Development? Or maybe his own online show "Clark and Michael"?
  • Sarah
I think the typecasting comments are justified. It's not that Cera OFTEN plays similar roles it's that he ALWAYS plays similar roles. It's a subtle but important difference. He needs to shake it up a bit and go outside of his tried and true character at least sometimes. He never does. He even WEARS the same stuff in every movie (the ubiquitous hoodie) and it's also the same stuff he wears in real life too. Because of all this it really is damn hard to defend and justify that he has any sort of range as an actor.

I would love to see him break out of his mold because I think he does have the telent but he's got to do it quickly or the offers are going to dry up, especially as he ages...Hollywood doesn't wait for anyone - there are just too many other male actors out there to choose from that are willing to go out of their comfort zone.

my problem is that some people are already writing the kid off.
He has talent but he's playing it too safe. But he has time to develop.
People forget that he was in well liked movies and TV shows.

Again, my problem with certain backlashes is that they're kinda predictable. If it's not Seth Rogen, it's Cera. If it's not Cera it's Jay Baruchel. If he's Jay then (insert new actor).
  • Paul Walter Hauser
Anybody notice how Jesse Eisenberg is kinda doing the Michael Cera thing?

Rewatch Adventureland and Zombieland and apparently anything else ending in "land" and you'll see what I mean.
  • Octoberist
He's been doing that since..the early 2000s. I remember I first saw Jesse in 'The Squid and the Whale'.

But in Jesse's defense, he does more indie movies than Cera so he has a broader ranger.
  • Octoberist
I still like Michael Cera though.

If it's not a backlash against Seth Rogen, then it's Cera. If it's not Cera than it's Jay Baruchel. Jay Baruchel?

I can gurren-damn-tee you people are gonna bash Baruchel too in the coming year. It's kinda passe
  • MarkoP
And then next it'll be Zach Galifianakis.
  • Octoberist
i would be shocked if there isn't a backlash coming up for the uber talented Zach Galifianakis. I hope not. Hell, I once read a comment (i forgot where) that stated that Robert Downey Jr is overrate. The same talented Robert Downey Jr who went to hell and back, had redemption and got one of the best comebacks in recent memory (Next to Mickey Rourke). I was like "What"?

It's just a vicious cycle on the internet.

Neildorman! lol that was an epic reply. Graphic! And yet it made me feel good. I did't know we could be so out spoken on this site. in the words of Neildorman "FUCK YOU" Cera rocks haters eat cock!

  • Guest
Funny as hell. But the backlash in general is WAY overboard, imo.
  • People are mad because it states the obvious, and people love it because it states this obvious. This is just a factual image. It rocks.
  • I wonder, how we would react if say - Steve McQueen or Paul Newman were here today, those two actors played almost the same role in there first several films. Give Cera a chance, he showed he has some depth playing the Francois Dillinger. You don't know, Hollywood is molding him into a fine actor.
  • GC
You got away from my point. LOLOL But, well played with the low blow ;).
Gramatical errors or not I just relinquished my soul. I'll have it back in no time. Till next time dogless...
  • Hopefully for him 'Scott Pilgrim vs. The World' will change things for him and his career.

I'm definitely looking forward to that one!
  • TotallyNotNick
I really like Michael Cera, but this was quite funny.
  • DrLickies
I like Michael Cera, I find him endearing and amusing.
  • wow what a nice visual design. I am impressed.
  • Matthew
I think the appeal in Michael Cera lies in how nerdy and loserish he seems. Thats one of the main reasons i find him so likable. And actors who become famous in a particular kind of role (the type for which theres a void in Hollywood) keep getting the same kind of roles like Abigail Breslin for example.
  • RayA
Saw Youth in Revolt and I'm glad I did, definitely entertaining and some real funny bits. And Cera was great for the part. I wonder if he has still been hedging on the Arrested Development movie though. Hopefully he's reconsidering after the performance of this and Year One. I think Scott Pilgrim will do quite well though -- a strong cast, plus Edgar Wright!
  • Michael Cera is also ugly and very un-attractive. i'll take a real man over a boy anytime, please.
  • karlpilkington
I found this funny and yet I still am a Michael Cera fan! How can this be?!
  • GC
If your getting sick of something just don't watch it. Saying that everyone in general is getting sick of Michael Cera is a douche-bag comment. Why? The kid is obviously talented and can get laugh pr somber chuckle every time he's on screen. He's got a presence, not a "I'm a big testosterone filled star" presence but nonetheless a presence that is well like by the general public. I feel that he's doing well for himself and when the time comes he'll change up his game.

Do you get sick of Brett Farve throwing touchdowns? No cause it's a man entertaining us like only he can. Do you get sick of Eminem bashing his mother and ex-wife while mutilating himself in songs with drugs? No! Why? Cause only only white boy can do it right! So getting sick of a funny, awkward, Ellen Degeneres look a like males should be something we can stomach.

In short, the dudes fuckin amusing and I'm a fan and everyone I know minus one douche is a fan as well. Stop drinking so much fuckin haterade.
  • Brett Favre's job is to throw touchdowns. A great actor is defined by their ability to diversify their roles.
  • dogless
I wish I reserved my above comment for you. You're full of it this morning.
  • GingerBreadMan
Didn't you know? This has become the new Aint it Cool, where everyone hates on everything. so even if you bring up a valid argument about Cera (that i disagree with, but who cares, because it is your opinion, which is your right) you will get bashed on. Constructive comments are no longer part of this site
  • Oh will you give it a rest. YOU don't like Cera. You also apparently think anyone who does is a moron. WE GET IT.
  • dogless
You've really misinterpreted what I'm trying to say here, haven't you? It's nothing to do with Cera, it's the notion of talent vs popularity.

This place is ridiculous - I'm tired of getting comments removed just because they're unpopular. So much for discussion.
  • That is indeed very funny, but I still love Juno and Nick and Norah. Does that make me a bad person? Or just a tool?
  • zebrat
    it makes you honest.
  • I quite liked 'Youth In Revolt', however Cera really does need to try a few more different projects after 'Scott Pilgrim', or he'll be running the risk of becoming type-cast in Hollywood as the awkward, yet intelligent-teen.
  • what if he turns 30...and he's still playing an awkward, intelligent teen?!
  • Auster24
This is more an analysis of "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist" than any other Cera film.

"Juno" isn't a Cera film - he's more in the background. "Superbad" could count but I've talked to plenty of people who related to it so I'm going to say it contains real-life teenagers. And personally, I think the movie is more about Cera's relationship with Jonah Hill than women. "Youth in Revolt" was shot years ago so it's somewhat dubious to include and though I haven't seen "Year One", I'm going to say these rules most likely don't apply to it either.

The Avatar-Pocahontas film treatment was better. A good idea though!

Thinking about this has got me excited for when he does a serious, dramatic role. Like Adam Sandler in Punch-Drunk Love or Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine.
  • TheModernPrometheus
Oh, how hilarious. Another cynical blasé example of our generation. Why is it so cool to rush to hate things that were awesome five minutes ago?

Get over it. Michael Cera captured our hearts as the awkward nerd and continues to play the same character. So what. All comedic actors do that.

Hate Bill Murray too then. He is awesome, and I love him. But he plays the same cynical asshole in every movie, and we love him for it.

Michael Cera does an awesome job playing this character. Who else could he play? What other role would he be believable doing? None. OK lets shit on him for it, until he is 40 something and let him back into Cooltown only too kick him out again when he has mass appeal.
  • cast
maybe he captured your heart. i keep mine in a big glass box. you can look, but don't touch.
  • I'm with you, TheModernPrometheus . Well said and right on the money.
