Ivan Reitman Will Direct Ghostbusters 3

ghostbusters3-550wide

Since the script for Ghostbusters 3 is currently being written by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, writers of the Harold Ramis film Year One, there has been some speculation that Ramis could come on board to direct Ghostbusters 3. (Though the relative failure of Year One on both a creative and commercial level didn’t add much weight to the speculation.)

Now we know that Ivan Reitman, producer and director of both original Ghostbusters films, will direct the third as well. What story elements can we expect to see in this third chapter? He isn’t saying.

Speaking to MTV, Reitman said that Eisenberg and Stupnitsky are working on a second draft of the script now. “They have delivered a draft,” he said. “We are working our way through another draft… good work is being done and all of us have our fingers crossed.”

Asked if he will direct the third film, Reitman simply said, “Yes.” We’d known he would be producing at least, but this is the first confirmation that he’ll direct.

He wouldn’t comment on recent rumors about the film. Reitman brushed off statements by Sigourney Weaver, who said that Bill Murray’s Peter Venkman character may appear in the film as a ghost. “I’m not going to comment on what’s in the script and on what Sigourney may or may not have said.” He offers that there are “some very cool things” in the script now.

That leaves us with the long-standing party line, as typically delivered by Dan Aykroyd, which is that the film will feature a young cadre of new Ghostbusters in addition to appearances (possibly as mentors to the young’uns) by the classic characters. One of the young ghostbusters may be Oscar, the grown son of Weaver character, and we can expect a lot of new gadgets and dimension-hopping tech. Personally, I just want some comedy that works. Everything after that will be cake.

obvious photoshop, actually appears like four because of having only 3 fingers. Don't ask me why, but it just seems odd. Much like Ghostbusters recieving a crappy sequel..
  • I'm somewhat comforted by Ivan directing -- it only seems fitting, even despite his patchy track record. Someone else directing a Ghostbusters film would be strange.

Chances are, it'll be as entertaining as the second film, which is pretty good considering it's the sequel to one of the most perfect comedies I've ever seen. As long as the original creative team is on board and gives a shit (unlike the "screw it, we'll do it now" approach to Indy IV) then we'll get a decent product.

    I'm excited.

All indications point to great movie!! Great cast, great director and we know that Murray wouldn't be on board if it wasn't a very good script...can't wait!

    O...M...G...

THIS IS AWESOME. This is so friggin' amazing. I love Ivan Reitman, and GB 1 and 2 were the epitome of my childhood... (as I am sure they were for everyone else here)

Holy craaaaaaaap this is amazing news. This is gonna be SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SOS SO SO SO SO SOS GOOD. It's gonna be amazing. I have a lot of faith in the writing team too. Holy crap. I can't wait.

    I have faith in this.

You already have my 10$ Reitman, NOW MAKE GOOD USE OF IT.

i said on chud how much I'm torn about this film going forward. I was 5 when gb2 came out, wasn't even born when gb1 was in theaters. I'm afraid it'll turn out like Indy 4 which I is exactly what happens when film makers lose their edge and try to get it back years later, it's a sad display of what I can only guess is our mid-life crisis. sigh... well the only movie that I recall this being similar to is blues brothers 2000. If it's as good as that movie, we're in good shape.

I'm not so sure I like Reitman directing. I think his time has come and gone, like John Hughes. He probably wants to make a comeback, especially after all the success his son has found recently, but this makes me nervous. Just because someone wants to do do something doesn't mean they should, I mean look at Ghostbusters 2 for fuck-sake!

BTW, I actually like Ghostbusters 2 but compared to the first, it's shit.
  • The_Kid
You do know Hughes passed right? Show some respec my friend.

This is great news! The Reitman name rocks!!

I liked DAVE and some of his post GB films haven't been as bad as everyone says but having Reitman back to direct doesn't really excite me. I'm also not too keen on seeing a young group of ghostbusters. I'd rather not see Michael Cera or some other flavor of the week sliding down the fire pole and hanging with slimer...

Evolution wasn't that bad, it was at least funny, I hope this can be Reitman's comeback. I just hope they get the tone of the originials right, if it doesn't feel like a Ghostbusters movie then no matter how good it is, it won't be the same.
  • While I thought Evolution was sort of funny it played like a GB1 remake with aliens instead of ghosts.
  • The_Kid
Yeah I didn't want to be the one but I know exactly what you mean.
  • Solid
Yeah that's how it felt to me too, even had a tolken black character. I don't know why they thought we wouldn't notice. I think that was actually the aborted gb3. Still, not a bad movie...

Haha I have never been more disappointed that the original is coming back for the threequel. Movies Reitman has directed in the last 15 years: My Super Ex-Girlfriend, Evolution, Six Days Seven Nights, Father's Day, Junior, and DAVE. Everyone single one of them ranging from barely mediocre at best to absolute turkeys.

Other options? Oh I don't know Edgar Wright, Greg Mottola for starters? I would say his son but I actually don't know if Jason Reitman would want to.
  • They better use 1980s special effects, or else it just won't feel right :/

Actually, if there's one thing that doesn't hold up from the first film, it was some of the fx. All the practical stuff on set was good and the model of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man was great, but you can see straight through the matted gargoyle in one of the first shots of the apartment, some of the matted composite shots don't work and the hell hounds in motion were just god-awful. If there's one bad thing about Blu-Ray is that it makes the strings in those 70's and 80's fx films all the more visible, thus ruining the suspension of disbelief.
  • presto117
i agree with these comments, but i think the one thing that could actually still work is the way the beams look. they don't bother me in the slightest.
  • This is great news! Whatever they do, if Bill Murray decides be in the movie when all is said and done, I think we can have faith that GB3 will be pretty good.

I have to say, I'm jonesin' for an ECTO-1 high speed ghost chase through the streets of NYC.... Here's to hoping we'll get to see one!
  • "From the director of "My Super Ex-Girlfriend"

... is how it's going to feel.
  • From the director of "Year One"

.....Good thing they got the best.
  • luke_a
Exactly. The reason why the first GHOSTBUSTERS was so great and the second wasn't was the humor being the dominant element of the film and not the fx like the second one. Big budget fx comedies have a very specific alchemy that only works on rare occasions (the only other ones I can think of are MEN IN BLACK, GALAXY QUEST and arguably HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY).

This is a step in the right direction, but like before, I'm approaching this with extreme prejudice.
  • I'm pleased to hear Reitman's back directing. I actually hope there aren't many new gizmos or gadgets. Or perhaps if there are, they should fail for being too sparkly and flashy which is when the original crew steps in with their classic proton packs and traps and get the job done. That could also be a nice dig at themselves as I know at least Murray was disappointed with effects out shining the comedy in GB2.

I guess I'm hoping for a nostalgia ride, even though if that's exactly what we get it'd probably be only half of a good movie.
  • presto117
i think the only things that should be added should be the equipment from the video game. they were all just attachments to the proton pack and none of them were too distracting.
  • molicka
    I don't think Oscar was Venkman's son
  • presto117
    he wasn't.

This doesn't give me a lot of hope. His recent movies haven't been very good and I keep feeling we're gonna end up getting a film like Blues Brothers 2000.
  • jetpackman89
THANK GOD! His recent movies haven't been that great but at least it will have consistence and the original cast.
  • World_Wide_Webber
This movie will most likely suck.
  • Great news. Very happy that Ivan is heading this up. I'm with Russ, we need comedy that works.
  • moviefan
Great news that ivan is indeed back. I cant wait for the film to go into production. Hopefully it will turn out all good.
