Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

Universal Pictures has released their 2010 movie preview which includes the first two official production photos from Edgar Wright’s big screen adaptation of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. The photo above appears to feature Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim, wielding a red Flaming Katana (George Lucas is gonna sue somebody…) in a futuristic nightclub, as Jason Schwartzman, who plays evil ex Gideon Gordon Graves and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona Flowers watch on in the background from atop a pyramid.  Check out both photos after the jump.

Starring: Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Alison Pill, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman
Director: Edgar Wright

Meet charming and jobless Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera). A bass guitarist for garage band Sex Bob-omb, the 22-year-old has just met the girl of his dreams…literally. The only catch to winning Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead)? Her seven evil exes are coming to kill him. Genre-smashing filmmaker Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) tells the amazing story of one romantic slacker’s quest to power up with love in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

Scott Pilgrim has never had a problem getting a girlfriend. It’s getting rid of them that proves difficult. From the girl who kicked his heart’s ass–and now is back in town–to the teenage distraction he’s trying to shake when Ramona rollerblades into his world, love hasn’t been easy. He soon discovers, however, his new crush has the most unusual baggage of all: a nefarious league of exes controls her love life and will do whatever it takes to eliminate him as a suitor.

As Scott gets closer to Ramona, he must face an increasingly vicious rogues’ gallery from her past–from infamous skateboarders to vegan rock stars and fearsomely identical twins. And if he hopes to win his true love, he must vanquish them all before it really is game over.

    sold.

I'm just saying now, though, that I thought the cop movie fundamentally sucked somehow. If he fails with this, I am just going to have to leave this bromance behind.

For all whose bummed out about Michael Cera being Scott, everyone should relax. Edgar Wright knows what he's doing. He's an excellent director.
  • McNuggets
Everyone is so sick of Cera since he plays the same character rolls but Scott Pilgrim is a bigger step from the little highschool characters he plays... plus George doesnt need to sue anyone thats a flaming sword...
  • wittyphrase
Is this going to be the new thing now? Shining lights directly across the camera lens because flare is cool?
  • justrobby
wow am i the only person who hasnt read anything on Scott Pilgrim
  • tinaturnerstampons
    It's ok if you haven`t!

Because even if you have, and you aren`t impressed with the production and make a negative comment

people still tell you to read the books

i believe most people on this site haven`t actually read the comics but say they have so they can play along to.

    its a party
  • tinaturnerstampons
This movie is a house constructed from cards; I expect absolutely nothing from it but hype.

... but I also hope it proves me wrong.

Just look at that group picture, it is loaded with terrible costume design and they decided to make that our first peak at the movie. That is worrisome.

They look like squeegee kids in Toronto

    read the books. then comment.

    Dear Afrovince,

I have actually read the comics and I am aware that they do dress like that.

I am also aware that Wolverine dresses different in the comic books but obviously someone realized that costume would look foolish on screen.

The goal of a good costume designer is not to take things to literally and translate from the page to the screen.

Why is it that every time someone has something negative to say about this movie people tell them "read the books". You shouldn`t need to read a book to like a movie, the film should stand on it's own. If it doesn`t then there is no point in making it.
  • afrovince!
i'm sorry, your "squeegee kids in toronto" comment made me think that you are looking for bad things about this film, before you've had a chance to judge it for yourself, as you have stated me to do.

That god damn kid from Jennifer's Body is in this...? Everyone involved with Jennifer's Body should be blacklisted from Hollywood. Especially that kid and his stupid tween smirk. Movie looks kinda cool otherwise.
  • Andrew but not that Andrew
It's not a light saber, it's a sword powered by love!
  • Tetsuo_Man
Yah, it's his love sword. At the end of the hilt, there's probably a heart... Can't tell though because the photo is small/blurry.
  • Palmer
Michael Cera as an awkward jobless, rocking samurai sithlord! Can't wait for the movie to come out, and for the 6th volume to finally be released
  • Andrew
I'm SO PSYCHED for this!!! Edgar Wright should once again knock it out of the park!

BTW, it's been reported that Universal has already confirmed a UK release date for August 2010, I think around the 28th, so the US release should be around then if not sooner.
  • Allen Davis
That isn't a "laser sword". it's a nihonto, commonly referred to as a samurai sword. It just also happens to be on fire, which makes it look a bit like a lightsaber.

    Weeaboo says what?
  • thatsapaddlin
    Did somebody just say "Weeaboo?"
'Cause I think I just heard somebody say "Weeaboo."
  • This does not make me feel any better about this movie.
  • Freaking Edgar Wright, man. I mean this in a good way, but his looks NOTHING like the video-blog they did from the pyramid-nightclub set… I was wondering what everyone in the video meant when they were going on about how cool it all was, and now it's pretty obvious.

    Super hyped for this flick.
  • Octoberist
I'm giving Cera the benefit of the doubt. I still like the guy.
  • thepwnyexpress
Im really sad that michael cera is the lead in this. :(
  • Octoberist
i think people are being too hard on the guy
  • thepwnyexpress
I mean, I'm sure he's a great dude, but sadly he does seem to play the same character in everything. I just hope this isn't "Michael Cera Stereotype vs. The World".
  • I have been waiting for this film so long, I almost feel like crying with every little piece of news. This is going to be so awesome. And this is from just one picture. I might have to kill myself after I see the actual film because nothing will be able to top it.

I have every ounce of faith (and then some) in Edgar Wright. If anyone can get a great performance out of Michael Cera, he can. You can start your nay-saying party when at least trailer comes out. In the meantime, you have to admit that, so far, this film looks like it's going to be off the fucking chain.
  • MonsterKilledThePilot
    looks awesome!
  • Alex
Heard great things about this. Can't wait for a trailer!
  • Craigasorusrex
Mary Elizabeth Winstead looks adorable and hot all at the same time.
  • randomtrip
    Can't. Wait.
  • freemachine
Ok, I was talk'n smack about this film several months ago, because I'm sick of Cera, but now I'm intrigued.
  • as long as Cera doesn't have a big role in this. Oh wait...
  • Craigasorusrex
Thats the only thing that dampens my expectations. Which is the terrible choice for the lead character. Incredibly nauseous of seeing Cera playing the exact same character (no exaggeration) for every single role he's tackled.
  • Craigasorusrex
    *meant read not watched.
  • Craigasorusrex
Um Jason B I can't reply to you but I'll just do it this way.

I've never watched the series but have asked several people who have read the comics.

They've all said that the character isn't much like Cera. Based on that I started getting worried that Cera who in most movies doesn't stretch beyond the "awkward guy with a comedic edge".

Its always the same damn character. Thats why he is the only concern I have with the film.

But I know Wright is a fantastic director so he'll make it work.
  • Tetsuo_Man
    @Jason B

Michael Cera was a horrible choice. End of Story.
  • jason b
the character of 'scott pilgrim' is absolutely nothing like anyone cera has played before.

but i'm sure you already know this, cuz there's no way in hell you would make an incorrect blanketing statement like this, seeing as how you've read all the books...right?
  • starscream9289
    Lens Flare: Part 2?
  • freemachine
Dude, at least there's an actual light source. In Abram's Star Trek, the lens flare was literally popping out of dark corners of the ship. Ridiculous.
  • Pistolpete
Watch the extra material on the star trek bluray, they created the flares by having a guy shining a light into the camera. Well except for the cgi-shots of the ship obviously, but they weren't illogical, you know there are lights on the ship
  • riggs
whoa whoa whoa, uhura was always hot. get the fudge outta here!
  • DC
    To Delta_Assault:

Sorry, meant to say "other trek films" instead of "original series"
  • DC
    To Delta_Assault:

The original series didnt have a lot of what was in the new film. Crazy rotating camera shots, Digital effects, a really hot Uhura, etc. Get over it. It was a stylistic choice that is either awesome or bad depending on who you are talking to. But if you are going to say that it sucked dont back up your argument with "But it wasnt in the original series! Wahhh!"
  • None of the other Star Trek films had lights on the ship that created really bad lens flare though.
  • bay area
Really Peter, no love for Mark Webber in the cast listing?

    kinda a dick move, IMO
  • I love that I know absolutely nothing about this film's plot. I'd like to go in completely fresh, but I know I won't be able to resist watching the trailer when it comes out.
  • super_aj
I have read all the books, but envy those who will see the movie with fresh eyes. I say, wait for the movie, then read all 6 books.
  • MickJ
Same. I was going to track down the comics but have decided not to, at least not until the movie comes out.
  • shane
Yeah I have NO IDEA what this is about and the synopsis doesn't help. And I like that. Also very excited to see what Micheal Cera will do under a talented director...
  • jason b
we haven't even seen any of this in the books, i wonder why wright chose to release a spoiler-ish photo like that? but they do look fun as hell!
