I’m not nearly as in love with the social movie ranking site Flickchart as other movie fans, but I can admit that they’ve sort of struck gold with their concept. Not only is that movie comparison data fun to share with your friends, but it also gives the site a lot of data to explore site-wide trends as well, such as this chart showing the most-liked films of the 2000s from the site’s 40,000 users. Today on their blog, Flickchart narrowed down that list, and provided some stats on what exactly makes those films the top twenty of the decade to their users.

Here’s Flickchart’s top ten from that list (check out the rest here):

10) Wall-E
9) Memento
8) No Country for Old Men
7) The Departed
6) Kill Bill, Vol. 1
5) The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
4) The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
3) Batman Begins
2) The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
1) The Dark Knight

What strikes me most about the list is that it doesn’t really seem to be a very good cross-section of the many great films we’ve received this decade. Instead, it’s heavy on big-budget crowd-pleasers (save for Memento), and short on smaller, independent fair. If this was a single person’s list, I would say that it’s not very original, but given that the data is compiled from tens of thousands of users, it’s little surprise that these sort of films have taken top spots.

But even as a list mainly filled with blockbusters, it’s a fairly intelligent selection. The Memento inclusion is a reminder that the Flickchart userbase is far from the average filmgoer, and the rest of the choices point to fairly geeky sensibilities.

Overall, it’s an interesting list because it gives us a peek into Flickchart’s user’s tastes, but it’s certainly not guilty of any truly original choices.

You morons do realize your opinions aren't law, right?

Being a movie snob dickhead doesn't make you superior to anybody, and you should maybe grow the fuck up and learn to respect other peoples' opinions.

*Cue nasally "You should learn to respect our rights to be assholes!" responses*.

    syndoche new york was hogwash,
batman begins was better than TDK,
Finding nemo is far better than the seriously overrated wall-e
glad there's no harry potter on the list
    or Shrek for that matter
this decade will be remembered for providing us with a load of shite cartoon film/kid adventure 'chronicle' movies and masturbate movies like the aforementioned adaptation and anything with paul giamatti.

And finally if anything is, NARC is the best film of the decade, you just wait and your kids will be watching this film down and commenting on youtube threads while threatening asian kids and fat people.

    End

My favorite film is the most appreciated original film in that list. Appropriate and true.
  • plagueoftruth
Yeah... I find this whole flickchart thing to be very suspect. I'd never tried it before today but decided to finallly give it a shot.

After spending the last hour ranking films, it lists '3:10 to Yuma' as my number 5 favorite film (a movie I don't particluarly love at all. It only popped up once and I think it was against something like 'American Pie') and it lists 'Blade Runner' (My actual #1 film of all time) as #11 (even though I've ranked it above every film it's been paired with and it's come up about ten times.)

Maybe I don't understand the ranking system but this is idiotic and completely flawed data as far as I can see.
  • Tom
Wow. The lot of you are arrogant movie snob pricks.

"Anything well liked by a lot of people is OVERRATED. My opinion is fact! I am the only sane man alive!"

Instead of stating your criticisms of these movies, you all just dogpile on other peoples' opinions and look down your noses at films that most people like. You may not like them yourself, and that's fine, but you don't have to be an asshole about it.

    Douches.
  • Chris
Kill Bill Vol. 2 is better than Vol. 1. Both great though.
  • Gordon
According to Flickchart, it was an absolute shite decade.
  • Ci
@AaronG, we're not arguing Batman is a ridiculous concept, we're arguing that it is number 1 film of the decade I guess. Not that I care much about that argument, I liked the movie after all, but it's the end of the decade and there's tons of lists out there, all of them irrelevant.

Except for David Chens. ALL HAIL DAVID CHEN.

    Long live David Chen!

Just one poster's opinion: The Departed beating out Memento and No Country for Old Men in ranking order is very strange indeed. As is the omission of There Will Be Blood--again, on a list that included The Departed.
  • mutantediez
I don't understand this whole thing about being original. If you like a movie that a lot of other people like does that make you an idiot?
  • Lorenzo Van Matterhorn
What about Gladiator, that is one of my favorite movies by far. Granted its from 2000 so I suspect voters have short term memory.
  • Ryan
Where the hell is District 9 or Inglourious Basterds?
  • plagueoftruth
I spent 5 hours rating films and didn't have either of those films pop up once. I said it before and I'll say it again: FlickChart's data is nonsensical, unusable and not fit for print.

I'm not a hater of the movie, but isn't it kind of sad that the screenshot for the 'best film of the decade' is a man dressed in a bat costume sitting across a table from a man dressed like a clown? I mean if you just take a step back from the situation it does seem silly. Best film on that list was Children of Men.
  • AaronG
this is actually fun, reducing movies like that. let's try it w/ some other ones. greedy meanface jerkwad: there will be blood. no one can get knocked up anymore: children of men. trolls fighting over a ring: LOTR. redneck running from crazy guy w/ a horrible bowlcut: no country. ferngully mixed w/ white liberal guilt set in space: avatar.

    see? fun!
  • J.D.
That's the quote of the month:

"ferngully mixed w/ white liberal guilt set in space: avatar."
  • Ci
Ah, the obligatory knee-jerk batfan makes an appearance. I'm talking about looking at the visual representation of the 'best movie of the decade' and taking it at face value, which highlights the silly nature of it all, and how Nolan is a genius for near-legitimising it with his serious approach.

If you don't find that image funny, and yes it's a freakin dude in a bat costume sitting at a desk trying to have a serious life-or-death conversation with a criminal, then you take shit way too seriously.
  • AaronG
    LOL

chillax, sparky. i was illustrating how you can reduce almost any movie and make it sound ridiculous. the basic conceit of batman is ridiculous? no fucking shit, but you're a little late for that train; take it up w/ bob kane. i agree that nolan is genius for making it all plausible and legitimate.

oh, and it's pretty well known that bale and ledger couldn't keep from laughing at each other the first time they were in a scene together. no one's arguing that batman isn't ridiculous, but he's still a damn good pop culture figure and icon.
  • No, I think it's quite iconic.
  • Would have been nice to see There Will Be Blood listed. Still, the list is far from surprising. Internet fanboys have spoken.
  • To everyone bitching and moaning about how their favorite indie movie that made 8 million dollars isn't on the list, get a clue. This isn't a best of list it's a most popular list among internet fanboys. Accept it and move on.
  • plagueoftruth
It's actually just a list of what films FlickChart decides are worth talking about. I signed on for the first time today at work and while I was taking phone calls I literally rated films for the last five hours. Yet not once did 'Brick' come up. Or 'Moon.' Or 'The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters.' Or many of my favorite films of this decade. But boy oh boy did 'American Pie' come up a lot. I wouldn't care about fanboys unbalancing the list if it was a fair list, but based on the options I've been presented with, appearantly I like 'Batman and Robin' more than I like 'Avatar.' And that, brother, is just ridiculous.
  • LorenzoVonMatterhorn
hahaha yes apparently I enjoy Shrek 2 more than Gladiator, Fight Club, The Illusionist, The Green Mile, and V for Vendetta.

OH! And Wild Wild West is one of my favorite top 20 movies according to FlickChart! The things I learn!
  • Jake Byrd
EXACTLY. You all need to quit complaining about Batman Forever not making the list.
  • RosanatorDA
there will be blood should be in everyones top 3.
  • betterthanyou
Oh yes. Because Daniel D. overacting to the point of vomiting makes for a GREAT movie. And people call TDK overrated...
  • Octoberist
let's elevate another movie by putting another one down. yahhh (sarcasim)

long live There will be Blood and Dark Knight!
  • Mike
I get why everyone likes that movie and i respect it, but I'm just not a fan. But I understand why people like it, it was well done.
  • J.D.
    Meh.
  • Guest
I love all of those movies. Love. But seriously, this is an awful list...
  • Jigga
    it's like talking to grapes.
  • kevin
lotr should be the top three
  • Scruffmcgruff
Haha I so agree with you
  • drowsy
Come on, surely you can see that this isn't a list of the best movies of the decade, but a list of the movies people most like to watch. For that purpose, this list is actually quite spot on. Complain when there's something to actually complain about.
  • Lord of the Rings takes three places? Come on... not all of them deserve a spot.
  • Lorenzo Van Matterhorn
Agreed. I would have put something like "Gladiator" in one of their places. I think that is a fantastic movie from 2000.
  • J.D.
If you look at the whole 20-movie list, Gladiator is on there.
  • Jakester
    Nice, thanks for the tip!
  • Why is Wall-E in this list? 3D animatet bullshit and no highlight. Some small highlights and nothing else. I waste my time in this movie. Ok, why Lord of the rings? Where is Titanic or Avatar? Never mind, userlists are senseless. The most people do only remember at yesturday and maybe this not. Memento and Kill Bill? You kidding me or don't you?

Morons -- the decade ends 12/31/2010....
  • Mike
    hahahaha dumbass!!!!!

    hahahahahaha
  • Slatters
OH WOW, look at all that typed out laughter! You sure showed him! hahahaha
  • Jakester
OH WOW, someone learned how to be sarcastic! You sure showed him! hahahaha
  • RosanatorDA
    you sir, are the moron
  • jackieboi
if this decades is considered the "2000s" wouldn't the year 2000 be included in the decade [A]? or do u consider it part of the nineties? Speaking of morons maybe you should think before you post and embarrass yourself like that. Better go get a new user name, you just tarnished yours.
  • ........ its clearly the end of the decade. Since the next decade is the 10's, wouldnt that start with 1/1/2010? I think it would. 1/1/1990 wasn't part of the 80's.
