I hope Twilight fans are happy with the fast-growing monster that is Taylor Lautner. He’s got two big movies in the works already (Max Steel and Cancun) and now he may star in a remake of the Matthew Modine coming of age film Vision Quest. This one would be comically appropriate, at least, as it would have Lautner as a kid who gets entangled with a slightly older woman while trying to prep for a wrestling match. But do we really need another version of Vision Quest?

E! News reports that Temple Hill Entertainment, one of the companies behind Twilight and the guys pushing Lautner’s Cancun movie (which balances the fact that they’re also doing movies like Gears of War and Dead Space) are getting the new Vision Quest off the ground.

The film, based on the novel by Terry Davis, is about a kid who decides to beat the best high school wrestler in the state, and receives little help from his dad and coach along the way. But single dad takes in a female boarder, and his infatuation with her makes it a bit difficult to concentrate on his goal. So does the presence of Madonna, who also made her movie debut as a singer in a bar.

In the original the age difference between Matthew Modine and co-star Linda Fiorentino (her first role!) was pretty small. He was 18, I think, and she was 21. Hardly scandalous. For this version, why not push it a little? Let’s give the Twilight moms something to really think about while they take a bubble bath — make the Fiorentino character a lot older, and maybe add another high school-age love interest against whom she can compete. If this can be turned into full-on meta Twilight fanfic, it could do Dirty Dancing numbers. (Or Dirty Dancing 2: Havana Nights numbers, at least.)

This came out when I was a Senior in high school and a wrestler. We went to see it for the wrestling, but were remarkably disappointed by how poorly the wrestling was done. That and the obvious illegal sexual relationship...

Wonder if they'll still call it "cooz"?

hahahhahahaha I DO, being a visionquest fan and a wreslter myself
  • I have only seen him on SNL and maybe 20 minutes of the first Twilight movie and I am so sick of him already.
  • why?

Vision Quest, at the time was a pretty good movie made on a low budget but kicked ass and still does to this day (Overall). I think they ought to just come up with another 'as close to original story' you can get of a kid coming of age. But leave "Vision Quest" alone.
  • There's something not right with that boy. That shocking grin and bashful demeanor may work for him if he was in a pop group, but I can't see him acting in any movie but one aimed toward preteen girls.

    Vision Quest?
The Italian title for the movie was "Crazy for you" due to the cameo of then upcoming singer Madonna.
I agree this at least is a project suited to former martial arts champ Lautner.
Anyway "the guy pushing Lautner’s Cancun movie" is his father, really.

I think it was called 'Crazy for You' in many places outside the States, in part because of the Madonna song, and in part because most people knew that 'Vision Quest' was a dumb title for the movie.

    Cancun? Really? What's next, Guadalajara?
  • This Twilight hater says, anything that gets Lautner to appear on-screen in a state of undress is a net positive for the world.

I thought the original was actually a good 80s "Rocky" rip off that was so popular back that decade. I don't know why they need to remake it.

The question is in the new version will they match Lautner up with a Shute character who is clearly 20-30lbs heavier than him eventhough they are both supposed to be about 168lbs? But then again, no way was Matthew Modine 168lbs either considering he is about 6-5. My only real complaint about the original was that it was so clear that Shute was far heavier than Lauden.

Vision Quest was one of my faves back then. Heck, i still like it. It's clumsy storytelling but for the most part things really come together. Even that Matt Dillon lookalike dude was funny. And the training montage where he climbs the pegboard. Lol. It really was cool them showing guys trying to make weight.

I woudln't mind a remake, i suppose. Not really expecting it to be watchable, esp with this kid.
  • he looks waaay too bi
I don't know one Straight Guy who's interested in seeing this Guy in an Action Film. Dude looks more like a Cover for Out Mag.

I don't understand why that matters. No if you'd complained about his acting...

why don't they just write an original film about wrestling and make that? I'm sure with all the screenwriters in Hollywood they could find one.
  • Schmoopy
Kind of looks like Anna Paquin with 80's hair.
  • Yes, I love her hair styles too.
  • I thought the exact same thing!

What is up with that dudes face???
  • Heyman T. Southpaw
I was thinking the same thing. The guy is a little weird looking.
  • Does anyone honestly feel like he might be the next Tom Cruise? I mean, he seems so eager to please everyone and it seems he's taking on projects to gain exposure, not for "respect" like certain actors do.

Anyway, I don't think he's a great or terrible actor. But he is nice eye candy.
  • J.D.
I don't think so. I've nothing against him, but he seems a little dead behind the eyes. Something isn't "present" and he comes off a little dull and phony. He doesn't have the intensity found in Cruise, and other long-term actors.
