Alexander Skarsgård Talks Straw Dogs and Thor

alexander-skarsgard-1

This post is probably going to be a bit like kicking a beehive. Every time we run an article about the upcoming Thor movie, starring Chris Hemsworth as the Norse god of Marvel comics and legend, there is a flurry of comments reiterating the fan opinion that Alexander Skarsgård should have been the one cast. And, in a small interview, he says he very nearly was, and that he auditioned quite a few times.

Before saying that he auditioned for Thor “many, many times,” the actor told Black Book (via The Playlist):

I know that they considered me for the part and I got, from what I understand, very close to getting it and that’s amazing because I know how many guys they look at for a part like that. I was very humbled by that. It was a great experience and you know you win some you lose some, of course I wanted to do that but…

Quite a few people also seemed to want him to do it. Commence your griping in the comments below. I’ll stay optimistic for Hemsworth because, really? It’s a summer blockbuster. If it isn’t great, it’ll hardly matter much at all in the long run. Skarsgård might have been great, but until I see footage demonstrating that Hemsworth is not, I’ll reserve judgment.

The younger Skarsgård also talks about his work in Rod Lurie’s remake of Straw Dogs, and drops some comments that properly prime me to expect less than a faithful remake, though that’s what I’d been expecting regardless. He plays the local guy who has a romantic past with Kate Bosworth’s character, which sparks into violence when Bosworth and her husband James Marsden move to her rural childhood home.

In the original, there was definitely tension between the local good old boy character and Susan George, but I wouldn’t call it a ‘love triangle’. That’s how Skarsgård describes this, which makes me wonder exactly how Lurie has skewed his version of the story. Can’t say I’m optimistic, but I am very curious.

It’s a remake and it’s not. Rod Lurie wrote it and directed it, and you can’t just copy a Sam Peckinpah movie because there’s really no point in doing that. You have to add something and I think Rod did. What attracted me to it is that there’s also a love triangle drama there. My character had a history with Kate Bosworth’s character. They dated for many years, she leaves and she comes back ten years later with James Marsden’s character who’s a screenwriter from Hollywood. It’s a culture clash.

I would have liked him more as Thor but he could be Hank Pym.
  • Hank Pym? Nobody wants to be Hank Pym. Not even Hank Pym wants to be Hank Pym.
  • fanboy_d
Zero Thor vibes from this dude. Don't know why people harp on about it.
  • Never seen True Blood?

People Alexander auditioned several times hell his fatehr even got a roel in the Thor film.Marvel and Kenneth Branagh who is a phenomenal director chose Hemsworth over him i think they know what they are doing.Marvel even said they were very impressed by Hemsworth ,they compared him to how Hugh Jackman was there wolverine and said Hemsworth is our Thor.

What are they supposed to say... We screwed the pooch on this one? Hemsworth is fine, but Skarsgard IS Thor.

I think Hemsworth will be great as Thor, he has the right look, build and can act. He reminds me of a young Brad Pitt, very similar in looks and body. He was very good as George Kirk in Star Trek even though he was only it it for 10 minutes he really stood out and made an impact. I like Skarsgard in True Blood but I find him a little wooden and he really can't compete with Hemsworth when it comes to looks.

Cry me a river that he didn't get the role. You guys were probably the same ones that were saying Heath shouldn't have been the joker. What a surprise!

Alex is featured on the December cover of the Swedish men’s monthly magazine Café.
In the interview, he talks about life in Los Angeles, True Blood and his work on Straw Dogs. The issue is not actually out yet but next week, Cafe.se will be posting a lot of pictures from the photo shoot on their....

eh, guess no Thor means he can be in the new Leo/Mel Gibson Viking extravaganza
  • Um.. Captain America anyone? I think Marvel went with Hemsworth for Thor and will cast Skarsgard as Captain America. It should have been the other way around, but Skarsgard looks leaner than Hemsworth. Let's wait and see.
  • B Beane
Yeah I agree. I think he would make a perfect Steve Rogers.
  • this guy is my biggest wet fantasy.

and yeah I'm against the idea of a STRAW DOGS remake (the original 1971 film was good), but I think he's probably done well in the remake. and he should have been Thor.
  • I really am surprised they didn't go with him; the fact that his father is already in it would have made it even better. People know Stellan Skarsgard. He's a great actor and they could have easily marketed this as the first major film of his son.

That said, going with an unknown really isn't something that Marvel likes to do. With Hemmsworth, they can ride his brief appearance in Star Trek, which was one of the biggest films of the year.

I'd say Skarsgard is MUCH more well-known than Hemsworth. Sure, he was in Star Trek, but only for like 2 minutes. Skarsgard has both Generation Kill and True Blood to his name.
  • Being in two premium cable series doesn't get the exposure that being in a very memorable scene from a blockbuster movie does. Yes, True Blood is damned popular right now, but I'd be willing to bet that most people would recognize Hemmsworth due to Star Trek before they recognized Skarsgard for True Blood.

This man can look at women and give them orgasms without touching them. Dinosaurs too.

This is true. I speak from experience.

this is gunvald again- I'm sorry to freak out and go Berzerk on ya. But i really, honestly think he'd be ALOT better than that gaelic little twat (he is perfectly suitable and fine in Star Trek, though.)
I'm just really, really devastated by this. :( *sulks and meads the rest of the evening and plannes for a rampage*
  • I'm devastated, too >=[
  • Gunvald, still lingering
go rape and pillage with me ja? tomorrow bittida?

I'm sorry but SKARSGARD shoulda got it!! the thing is this; I don't give a shit about his pecs and looks. But he has all the thrillions of dimensions of our man Thor that blaha-ish stoneface hemsworth don't. VIKING DEPTHS. A SARCASTIC AND IRONIC but still highly dorkish and a bit himbo'ish twist. Thor was just this. Strong, badass, fing crazy, a bit sly and witty, plus both unintentionally and intentionally funny with a mead-sprung glimpse in the reddish eye and that latent mental crazyness that both Skarsgard and his Dad seems to have as a trait, probably in their genes, that make you feel like he could flip out anytime if he'd like to. Good thing for a Crazy Viking Ass Thunder God. As a Scandinavian myself I'm ofcourse deeply concerned with this whole thing, and he couldn't freaking be more perfect, you couldn't find a better scandinavian actor even if he'd play Thor here.. It's the character. I know it's Marvel but he would nail that down to the point. he has that brutal popular culture thing goin but can still be serious and urgent. he has a range of pure dynamics and quirks, vulcanic energy, (yes, really lol) which will only get better and he would surprise us, as a marvel hero. he's almost always good fun to watch and have got a severe stage presence, which would unleash 100% as a marvel God.. he looks like him to 99%, while hemsworth look like a legosoldier from britannia. just to much of a brick, or patisserie. to blah not-menacing, not to expressive action hero. uninteresting..while Skarsgard is more of a crazy muthefucker who you never know where's at. he would do WONDERS with this part. really, I'm proud of my ol' viking roots and I've read both the old Norse Sagas Eddan, the comic Valhalla by peter madsen and some Thor and Marvel, and knows my shit. :D :D This rant is deeply stated! >:P we are so disappointed and still feel we want to sacrifice at least 50 slaves and do some blute to this devastatingly wrongful facts. Thor is thor, not hemsworth. lol. no but really, he'd done great. he's got that crazy energy going on. Hell och skål!

The words VIKING DEPTHS very nearly made me spew coffee everywhere. Followed so closely by Viking ass, comedy gold.

I got one word for you: paragraph.
  • is Alexandar Skarsgard really popular in Sweden? I know that he comes from a famous family of actors. I've only seen him and his dad, Stellan, though. I havent seen any other Skarsgard brothers in any films.
  • nameit
@ Travis McGee. No, Peter Sarsgaard and Alexander Skarsgard are not related even though their names are similar.
  • Travis McGee
His brother is married to Maggie Gyllenhaal. His brother was also in that Gulf War movie with Jake Gyllenhaal.
  • gunvald
he's wellknown for being really good playing bimbo. but he earned respect from the public after Gen Kill, and to some extent TB. it's aired now. swedes always go proud when a countryman does well overseas.
  • SvergFour
He was voted "Sexiest Man" in Sweden like 5 times or something ridiculous. His brother Gustaf is a pretty accomplished actor as well, he was in a Swedish movie called "Evil" which was nominated for the foreign language Oscar a few years back.

I know too much about that family.
  • oh wait!!! I've seen EVIL on Netflix a few weeks ago. I thought the title was very misleading, so I was disappointed with the film's plot-line. I did not care for the film.

Personally I reckon Alexander is sooo much better looking than Gustaf.

goddamnit, why are you Swedes so damn sexy?
  • Gunvald
sorry we don't use them in sweden. <:

    Hahaha X)
  • I just think that Alex would've been perfect. Absolutely perfect. The fact that Hemsworth (Or whatever that assholes name is) got the role makes me hate him. Very much.

Alex is also very hot. I'd go gay for him any day.

Seriously though, it would have been nice to see him in a blockbuster movie.
  • I'd go sooooo straight for him. Oh yeah, I'm already straight. Tee-hee ^_^
  • guess he could hammer whoever he wants
  • Hansel
His best role was in Zoolander. Not many people can say that they were killed in a freak gasoline fight accident.

I don't want to see another news article until that review is posted.

I'm going to continue to rage about Hemsworth. He's way too....pretty looking. And blah. And just overall stupid and wrong.
  • fanboy_d
I know of NO artist that doesn't draw Thor as the most attractive male specimen imaginable, with characters often commenting on it. Hell, Ant-Man's girlfriend The Wasp wouldn't shut up about how good looking Thor was when the Avengers first got together. You don't know what you're talking about.
  • Like Jake Gyllenhaal in Prince of Persia? Yes. Yes, exactly.
  • are you saying Alexander Skarsgar isn't pretty enough??? huh? HUH?!?!
  • derp
Hemsworth is going to own the role. Devindra will rage
