Steven Spielberg’s Reaction to Avatar

spielberg_jazz_hands

Probably still the most revered man in Hollywood, Steven Spielberg’s opinions on films typically become big talking points. Already this year we’ve heard about his reaction to Paranormal Activity and Transformers 2, both of which he got rather excited about, and now he’s given his opinion on Avatar.

But before we get to that… let’s consider why we should even care.

One argument would be that Spielberg is a tremendously knowledgeable filmmaker who can make some incredibly informed and sophisticated assessments of movies based upon their craftsmanship, representations and context. Another one - and the one I’m going to put forward - is that Spielberg is somehow an incredible barometer of widespread public taste.

There’s a famous story about Star Wars that you may not have heard. George Lucas screened an early cut of the film for some of his fellow movie Brats, including Brian DePalma and Spielberg. When it was done, Lucas’ own wife apparently burst into tears and damned the film with “It’s the At Long Last Love of science-fiction. It’s awful”, though why she hadn’t realised this when editing the film I do not know. DePalma also leapt in and criticised the film heavily though was apparently more constructive and is reputed to have helped Lucas fix some elements up, including the now classic scroll of opening text. But only Spielberg claimed that Star Wars had the stuff. Indeed, he saw a smash hit. “That movie is going to make $100 million” he said.

And that’s why he’s running a studio these days.

So, did Spielberg have a similar reaction to Avatar?

Nikki Finke has published a new story on the box office prospects of Cameron’s epic, and included an aside about Spielberg’s soundbite review of the film after catching a screening.

The last time I came out of a movie feeling that way it was the first time I saw Star Wars.

And here’s another quote, worded differently and offered up by The Hollywood Reporter:

The most evocative and amazing science-fiction movie since Star Wars.

So he likes it, and he still likes Star Wars. I wonder what Marcia Lucas will make of Avatar?

There’s a similar naivety to Lucas’ film and Cameron’s, and a similar success in delivering big, broad-appeal ingredients cooked up with cutting edge razzmatazz. I think Avatar is the better film, when all is said and done, but at the same know it can’t have the same effect on the industry, not now that huge shift towards FX-powered fairy tales has already happened.

"Avatar" is not a better film than "Star Wars". "Avatar" has amazing special effects and a dull story. "Sherlock Holmes" was more enjoyable than "Avatar". It can now join "Titanic" as one of the most overrated movies of all time.

avatar is a superb film , people can pick it apart all they want but as an expieience it is just spectacular

Avatar is a stolen concept from Hinduism. If you don't believe me...just stop reading this. First of all, the name 'Avatar' comes from ancient India and means 'Re-incarnation' of a very powerful being. Same concept is introduced. Next, if you Google the following names, Rama, Krishna, Vishnu and Shiva...you will notice they are big and blue, just like the Na'vi, and supposedly these gods of Hinduism live on a different planet in the universe. Thirdly, the bio-luminescent forest with glowing plants was a reality in ancient India from which Ayurveda came, the science of plants and medicine. These plants were so sensitive that they would darken as someone approached. Fourth, the story of Ramayan in which there are monkeys defeating a powerful army is very much present in 'Avatar' as the blue cat people look like hominids too with tails. But people do not want to watch Hinduism, so a brilliant director re-introduces the same ideas in a way that would appeal to everyone and creates a masterpiece that has left an indelible mark in the memories of those who loved the experience, including me. In no way did I find this movie racist, because the white man Jake Sully gives up his way of life and skin color to become one of the blue natives and defends them with his life. Is that racist? Is a white director creating a movie in which humans get smashed being racist?

When Star Wars was first released theatrically it didn't have the opening crawl, that was added AFTER the public reaction was so strong he knew he'd be able to make sequels.
Yes, the story was always meant to be multi-episodes, but the first cuts didn't have the crawl.

32 years later, Star Wars is still a classic. Its outdated visual effects don't make a difference because the story and characters hold up after all these years. Will Avatar be relevant in 32 years? I doubt it.
  • Blue God
Star Wars is long forgotten. Avatar will always be the true love story. Star Wars was cheesy all the way.

To all those who think Star Wars is not that great and over rated, obviously don't know much about films and story telling and creativity. They are just going against Star Wars to try and seem "cool" by writing something outrageous and not popular. It is ridiculous to think that any science fiction movie or story will be as good as Star Wars. Although Lucas is not a good director at all, and episodes 1-3 are horrible. The originals are untouchable it ranks with The Godfather as far as achievement. Both sequals rival the originals that is unheard of. I believe that since only the Dark Knight is a better movie then the first. Spider-Man 2 could be a valid argument though. All these people are just trying not to be with the majority, they are want to be punk rockers saying what ever might be controversal just to stand out. Its a pathetic thing that people are like this, it makes you hate society and most of those who participate in it

I saw Avatar yesterday and I can't help to notice the rascists aspects to the movie, especially in the language and music. It reminded me of the Heart of Darkness were the "White man" brings civilization to the "Black Africans" and you can hear this in Africaner style in the music and lanquage. It's a rascist movie no doubt about it, but I liked it anyways. The "White man" reigned superior to the "Black man" in the end. Check it out and tell me if I'm wrong...

It won't revolutionize 3D filmmaking right away. It's just a beginning, a frst step in that direction. Panasonic is going to be marketing 3D televisions in the spring time... so the change to 3D is in fact coming.

It will however, revolutionize the film industry in the way filmmakers use motion capture to creature photorealistic characters.

Who really cares what he thinks? He said transformers 2 was a very good movie so he obviously doesn't know shit.

Ok honestly, avatar is a boring story ( story seen about two zillion times ), awkward dialog ( very very strange dialog ), a bit of sad acting ( not the CG one :) ) wrapped in a magnificent and technically superb CG.

Definitely a movie to watch - Once.

Hi am from Mexico city and definitely this film rocks, the message that has on loving life and whats in it, the way we know that human race suck's sometimes really worked on this film.

Thumbs up! and to me this is the new Star Wars same impact for this century, original, excellent effects etc.. etc i cant wait to get the BlueRay.

I know next year nice blockbuseters are coming like Tron, Clash of the Titans, films will remind my childhood, but still Avatar is original and that makes it the best film since i said it Star Wars...
on scale to 10... i give an eleven!

Avatar better love story > cheesy Star Wars
Absolutely YES. YES YES YES YES YES

I'm with you. The script was more than decent. I would have loved the film to have a more original story. I mean, I just got back from seeing it a second time, I love the movie, but it really is 'Dances With Wolves' just like 'The Last Samurai' was. Still, I don't know if story was the main goal here. This film was stunning and the script was more than capable of supporting the spectacle. I hope that commenter in their 'irony' wasn't trying to lower this to a level like 'Transformers 2's.' That would be crazy.

    Some people are just haters.

Did anyone else find Sam Worthington slightly wooden and kinda bad? Maybe it was due to the fact that half the time he was acting behind layer upon layer of CGI, but it was all a little too single-wavelength. His accent slipped back into australian too, maybe i noticed more cos I'm aussie though..
  • frelling_cute
Spielberg liked Transformers 2? That ruins his credibility right there.

I love all the worry about how much money Avatar will make. Are you serious? People are all tapped out from spending their last dimes on Christmas presents in a horrible, sinking economy - I doubt we will see record numbers of people buying 14 dollar tickets right now.

Maybe they'll go after the holidays when the movie receives more press coverage and people have forgotten all the holiday spending they've already done.

Idiots like Propadanda know nothing about film yet post on film sites. You don't think the editing of STAR WARS is brilliant??? The wipes you mention are supposed to be there to harken back to old serials. For tips on editing, check out the TIE fighter attack on the Millenium Falcon, or the trench run against the Death Star. Examples of BRILLIANT editing. Anyone who attempts to disagree has never, ever taken a film course or tried to edit anything other than a home movie.

As far as AVATAR, Brendon can try to make any claim he likes, but the simple truth is that AVATAR simply does not have much warmth, despite the lovey-dovey, we-are-one storyline. The characters are all very bland, and the mythos is explained to the nth degree (especially compared to the three-sentence descriptino Lucas used to describe the mystical Force). I doubt seriously that anyone - even supporters of this film - will care about the characters of AVATAR more than a Han Solo or a Luke Skywalker.

Here's my overdue review of AVATAR: http://sammyray.com/802/avatar/
  • Oh thank god. I was just saying to myself "When is Sammy Ray going to post his review and then link to it on a more popular website while trashing his hosts".
    Seriously dude it IS overdue.

Star Wars= A bad imitation of samurai and western films.
  • Exactly! That's what I always tell everybody!
It was pitched as an Akira Kurosawa film in space! And now it's a bloody religion!
And now they accuse Avatar of being unoriginal-- I mean, talk about hipocrisy.

who the fuck cares what spielberg thinks about movies? guy hasnt made a relevant movie in over 10 years

i love spielberg. He's such a dork, but a genius too. i never see anything arrogant in him, seems like such a good guy.
  • Blue God
I agree, Spielberg is not going to sit still after this moment. Expect competition beyond comprehension.

Avatar is better than Star Wars? I will wait and see, but I'm going to tell you right now that it's a HUGE claim. I don't think there could be a better trilogy of Sci-Fi films ever made, and I'm not some pandering obsessed geek either. Great films that are just so classic that they will never be touched.
  • Evil Monkey
What makes the script so bad, it's an action movie for christ's sake. And for the record I liked the script because it wasn't the smartest movie, but it worked for the film. This wasn't donnie darko people!
  • YoungZer0
It's people like you that make the Transformers movies possible.
  • Evil Monkey
Were you honestly expecting a good movie when you walked into Transformers? Were you expecting brilliance when you saw crank? Some movies are made not to be that orignal. However here, it seemed like the point of the movie was to immersed into the world. In that since they won, however i go to certain films expecting certain things.
  • Evil Monkey
I can't directly reply. My point is that movies sometimes do have other merits. If you expect nothing but perfect in every film you see you will never be happy. Also let's say you saw a really smart film with not the greatest visuals, are you saying that it should be trashed as well. And again I stand by the script isn't horrible. It's not the greatest script ever wrote but it's still a good Hollywood script. Also don't get me wrong, you should expect quality in your films. But sometimes it has to come from other elements then just the obvious.
  • YoungZer0
Do you honestly think i'd pay to see movies like Transformers and Crank? My friends rented it.
  • no. we should have incredibly high expectations for our action films, but when you are creating a movie to appeal to as large an audience as this one needs to be successful, you don't take the chance of writing a complex narrative. Example: Chris Nolan loves a complex narrative structure. Loves it. But didn't use even a single flashback in TDK because it would have gotten in the way of mass appeal.
  • Hmm... You really think Avatar is better than Star Wars. That's a bold claim... Star Wars, while heavy on Special Effects at the time, had a fantastic story. I love that people thought it would fail. Prediction fail.
  • starscream9289
Was that picture taken while Spielberg was watching the movie?

    FAO Brendon

I would equate coming on to site like this and giving arguably, the most beloved geek movie of all time a 6/10 with logging on to say, a Liverpool FC fansite and calling Kenny Dalglish over rated or a NY Yankees site and calling babe ruth just a fat bloke that could hit.

    IMHO of course :)
  • Sorry don't mean to pick on you or anything but everything you post is incredibly annoying.
He didn't log on, he works here. His informed opinion got him the job. Star Wars is beloved for many cultural reasons, but as a FILM it has many flaws. He compared that in relation to this current spectacle film. That's all.

How badly did the cloning process go anyhow?

  • Great post! Check out my post From Kubrick to Cameron http://ow.ly/NxOT I love how we can look back at films like Star Wars, A Space Odyssey and we are having that feeling today of absolute awe just like film has done in the past! My imagination of film for the future is endless!
  • YoungZer0
Why is everyone so impressed of this movie? Seriously, i saw it in 3D (First time 3D btw.) and i was kind of bored. The story has been told way too many times to get my attention and i have played far too many videogames to be impressed by the visuals. Sure the world is interesting and completely alien but again, this has been done better in many videogames. The only thing that amazed me was the action. I think it's kind of sad that the dialogs were so bad and the characters didn't feel fleshed out.

There is absolutely nothing groundbreaking or "gamechanging" here.
  • edc2
I've read this elitist message so many times before, I got bored reading, not to mention the tired beginning with a question crap, and worse is that this guy actually uses abbreviations.
plus he equates videogames on his dinky tv with a 3d movie that took a decade to develop and has no uncanny valley moments.
that comment brought no information and was absolutely not gamechanging.
  • YoungZer0
    Get a grip, fanboy.
  • So the guy who made Indiana Jones & The CHURCH OF SCIENTOLOGY liked this one, huh?

I could also make a crack about rape & peru...

But I'll just point out, if Spielberg is impressed, it's because he doesn't have an XBox 360. That's where sci-fi spectacle LIVES now.

On AVATAR itself, I saw it. And NEVER BEFORE has something so BEAUTIFUL been so BORING, so DON'T BOTHER. Like a blitzed bottle blonde in a bar: it's banal booty begging for attention.

And hey, it's also RACIST as all getout! Thought they were gonna start singin' "What makes the Blue man Blue?" for a second there.
  • Avatar was amazing. I've NEVER felt that way when watching a movie in my life. When I saw Star Wars I was 8, and it was the best thing I'd ever seen. But now, Avatar is the best film experience I've ever had, without any question at all. In 3D that film is something else.
  • Kyle C.
Yea, just got back from Avatar and it was pretty amazing. The story might be overly familiar(though timeless) and the Na'vi a little too influenced by Native Americans but the visual effects are spectacular and the 3D is amazing. The visuals are definitely photo-realistic and Zemeckis should bow his head in shame for letting Cameron achieve what he's been trying too do for so long, create living, breathing CG actors that we actually care for. I cared more about Na'tiri more than all of Zemeckis' creations combined. Speaking of Na'tiri, Zoe Saldana should definitely be nominated for best supporting actress, she was amazing! I would definitely say this is James Cameron's third best film, behind Terminator 2 and Aliens. cameron is officially back baby, sorry I ever doubted you! GO SEE THIS MOVIE!!!
