ghostbusters3

Sigourney Weaver has been doing a lot of press for Avatar, so naturally lots of film journalists are hammering her for news about her potential involvement in Ghostbuster 3. Just last week, she mentioned that Bill Murray might be returning to the film as a ghost. Recently, MTV caught up with Weaver in London to try and clear things up. The short answer: She hasn’t read the script and doesn’t know too much yet, but she did have one interesting nugget about the film’s potential plot. Hit the jump to hear what she had to say.

When asked about Bill Murray’s character again, Weaver said, “I don’t know, I mean, he could come back as a sort of Slimer character.” Pressed on whether she knew or whether this was conjecture, Weaver explained:

I don’t know. I haven’t read the script. They’re sending me the script. I guess my little son Oscar, who was kidnapped, is a Ghostbuster, which makes me very proud. So [director Ivan Reitman] called me the other day…and said he would love me to take a look at it. In a few weeks I’ll actually know what it is, though I probably won’t be able to talk about it.

Weaver also expressed that she’d be willing to reprise her role in the third film, although the involvement of the original cast is still not certain. Ghostbusters fans will remember that Weaver played Dana Barrett, whose son Oscar was just a toddler in Ghostbusters II. Oscar was kidnapped by the Vigo character, who tried to transfer his spirit into Oscar’s body. It seems as though Oscar’s traumatic brush with the paranormal prompted him to take up ghostbusting as a profession.

MTV speculates, probably correctly, that Reitman talked to Weaver on the phone and gave her the broad strokes of the plotline before sending over the script. Reitman probably mentioned the possibility of Murray as a ghost, as I can’t see Weaver just outright fabricating such a development. Still, it sounds like a lot is still up in the air at this point.

It should be noted that we first heard the possibility of Oscar’s involvement in the plot of Ghostbusters 3 over a year ago. Things sound a little more certain now than they did back then, but hopefully the trickle of information will become more study in the months to come.

Really, given the choice of the movie killing off Venkman or not having a movie, I'd rather that they'd recast Venkman to keep him alive, or change direction to a novel and forget the movie idea. I think this concept will unnerve a lot of people, especially those with little kids who are familiar with Ghostbusters. I know all of that plays into childhood idols, hero worship, etc, but I believe many powers that be have forgotten that people who buy movie tickets (like me) are those whose contributions to the box office give life to the projects that roll out of Hollywierd. My niece is 9 and watched Ghostbusters for the first time a few months ago. She loved it. I did too, and it made me smile to see how Venkman is her favorite (as was mine). Now, they're coming up with a new movie and they're talking about killing him off. That's just mean, man! I'm not going to take her to see that! Ghostbusters is supposed to be funny. This doesn't sound funny at all, much less like anything I'd have any remote interest in seeing, myself. Some people need to take their eyes off of their own introverted self interests and start polling the public before moving forward on their own "visions" of alleged genius. If I'm right about how people are going to feel about this business of killing off Venkman, and I don't care WHO co-stars will Bill Murray, this movie is a flop in the making. This is probably my last post on the subject (I'll step away from my soap box, now).

That_Guy: I don't think you are the only one who likes the concept but in all honesty, I believe you are among the few.
  • samboni
i hope Jonah Hill plays Oscar
  • That_Guy
I think I'm the only one that likes this concept. I can just imagine them not busting him because it's him. So he just hangs around the firehouse and does what Bill Murray does best.

Then sure something would happen where they need Venkman to do something to help because perhaps there is only something a ghost can do.

I don't like the idea of peter as a ghost at all
    wasn't it bad enough *spoiler*
to see him die in zombieland
i don't know if i'll be able to handle it again
  • moviefan
well its nice she cleared things up a little bit. So cant wait to we get more solid information on the film. Then once it goes into production. So hope gb3 is good.
  • Bill Murray as a Ghost is old, old news from back in the late 90s.

Back in the late 90s when Will Smith and Chris Farley were attached to GB3, Murray had said at that time that he'd only come back if Venkman died in the beginning and spent the rest of the film as a ghost.
  • This piece of info was in the last article posted on /film about Weaver's comments. Nothing new in this post.

I don't like the Peter Venkman ghost idea.

I've already posted on other news sites about this news release, and here I am on this one to do the same, only to state: Bad idea, people. Bad idea (sighing, rolling eyes, closing the internet).

Hopefully Ivan is just producing and Jason is directing.
  • xfloormattx
Jason said himself he's not directing.
  • super_aj
yeah, he said because of his style of directing it would be super boring, Just guys talking about ghost-busting and not a lot of actual ghost-busting going on. He was joking obviously but he's got a point.
  • De Malma
Well Bill Murray has said recently that the original concept for GB2 was for the Ghostbusters to die and become ghosts (something called the Ghostbusters go to Hell), but it got changed to what was eventually filmed. Murray said he liked the Ghostbusters as ghosts concept, so this was probably one of his stipulations as far as his being in a part III
  • Wait? Reitman called her up. So does this mean he is directing. I never even heard it being announced he was producing. Where have I Been?
  • Thanks Dave, I knew I missed something.

Sigourney says she probably won't be able to talk about the script once she gets it...yet she has already talked about the possibility of Murray as a ghost and Oscar's involvement. The studio needs to put a muzzle on her.
  • Interesting.

    I want GB3 so badly.
  • J.D.
    I smell Oscar!!!!!
  • He IS rather smelly. Living in a rubbish bin and all that...
