First Look: Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs the World

scott-pilgrim-cast-header-1

We’ve seen a lot of candid cast photos for Edgar Wright’s upcoming Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, but until now we haven’t seen any actual stills from the film. Edgar Wright just blogged what appears to be the first official still blown up and framed.  But the wily director didn’t just throw the shot out to the world; he took the photo at an extreme angle that seeks to obscure it somewhat. Thanks to the magic of this photo reconstructing program I have on loan from the FBI (ok, it’s just Photoshop) you can get a great look at Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Johnny Simmons, Ellen Wong, Allison Pill and Mark Webber as they (I think) look disdainfully at a performance by a rival band.

Check the original photo and our ‘fixed’ version in embiggened size after the break.

The photo seems to be set in Lee’s Palace, one of the venues where some of the bands in the story play. Left to right we’ve got Scott Pilgrim (Cera), Ramona Flowers (Winstead), Young Neil (Simmons), Knives Chau (Wong), Kim Pine (Pill) and Stephen Stills (Webber). Ramona and Kim are costumed as we see them in the first of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novels, when the characters are all watching the band Crash and the Boys before Scott’s battle with Matthew Patel, the first of Ramona’s evil exes he must fight. But I don’t think that goes down at Lee’s Palace.

Another scene, where the group is at Lee’s to see The Clash at Demonhead, could be the setting for this photo. If you’re more of a Scott Pilgrim expert than anyone else, chime in below with your thoughts.

Meantime, while the recent screening of Kick-Ass has many people aflutter over that movie, this is the comic book adaptation I really want to see. We’ll have to wait until next year.

Here are the ‘fixed’ and original photos. Click each for larger sizes.

  • anyone else think this looks like Scooby Doo? Come on, be honest

Yeah, that's definitely before/during the first Clash at Demonhead show. Look at Knives's (Ellen's) hair. She has the highlights before the show in Vol. 2, and she gets them punched out of her hair early in Vol.3

    They all have terrible hair.
  • It has to be the first Clash at Demonhead performance. For Crash and the Boys the band were backstage, Stacey and Ramona were out front, and I can't remember where Knives was. Also, there appear to be people standing in the background, so that is too a dead giveaway.
  • Billy Corgan represented! I miss the 90s.
  • So, so, so, so, so, excited for this. Love the books. Love Wright. Nergasm.

Scott Pilgrim, Kick-Ass, Iron Man 2, Inception, Toy Story 3 .... 2010 rounding into form nicely. And hey! 3 out of 5 aren't sequels!

Looking at the costuming for Stephen Stills (yes, we have to say his full name), Kim, and Young Neil, I'm thinking this is the first night that Clash at the Demonhead is at Lee's Palace. The only thing is, Romona's hair is a different color to it than it did on Vol. 2's cover (where the scene takes place). Maybe they combined both into one section of the film?
  • I just wish Ramona was prettier in costume. I was happy with who they cast for the role, but here, I dunno. She isn't doing it for me. The Ramona in the comic is supposed to be pretty hot in her own way.

Will wait for final judgment when I see the film.

Overall, I am pretty excited though. Definitely looking forward to this.

Trust me when I say, that though it's initially jarring... the hair and the costume, she's still veeery, especially the more you see her in costume. Or at least she was in person.

But yeah, I had the same initial reaction... but I warmed up pretty quickly.

As someone who lives right smack in the middle of where this film takes place and where it was filmed (Scott Pilgrim's house is on my street!) I can say that they obviously have a respect for the city. The comic is a great love letter to Toronto, and I think the movie is really going to keep it up - I mean, based on the video blogs, they are really making it look like Toronto!

As a Torontonian, I pray to God that this makes up for the fact that Hollywood raped my city in The Love Guru.
  • Incredibly psyched about this movie. The still looks about as close as live action could come to looking like the comic. Now I need to read through vols. 1-5 again . . .

I can't wait for the 6th and final volume to come out.

Yeah, everyones costume (apart from MC's) is spot on for it to be at Lee's watching The Clash at Demonhead for the first time.

I can't wait for this flick but it still looks like a dedicated group of fans cosplaying more than a still from a movie… I don't think the realisation has kicked in for me yet (yes, I a a huge fan of the books)

I'm SOOOO excited for this film! Edgar needs to release a trailer soon!
  • Andrew
    Can't wait...

The cast definitely has some resemblance to the comic characters, which is great, of course.
  • super_aj
I can't wait to see this. Looks just like the books. Awesome.
  • holysheet I'm PSYCHED.
WHEN THE EFF IS THE TRAILER COMING?
  • Dru
It's Lee's Palace, not Place. As a former Torontonian (still a Torontonian at heart) and huge fan of the books, I can't wait for this movie!
