Listen to the Awful Avatar Theme Song

Leona Lewis

Last month, it was revealed that James Cameron’s Avatar would have a closing credits theme song titled ‘I See You’, performed by multiple Grammy® Award-nominated singer Leona Lewis — an obvious attempt to replicate the success of Titanic’s Celine Dion theme “My Heart Will Go On“.

I’ve been labeled an Avatar “apologist”, but I can’t defend this song. I See You is now online, and it is laughably bad. Listen to the song now, embedded after the jump.

The Avatar soundtrack will be released December 15th (December 14th internationally) and is currently available for pre-order at AvatarScore.com . Avatar hits theaters everywhere on December 18th.

  • avatar rocks!!!!
the song is cool and the film rocks i hate everyone who sais it is crap

You must have seen a different movie. I watched the regular version of the film and was astonished. Since movie reviewing has been such a big part of my life over the last 20 years, I can honestly say that Avatar is one of the best films I've seen in a very long time. That includes the soundtrack. Give the man some credit for spending 14+ years working on this idea and composing a monster story and array of actors to display his long-time aspirations for a technological anomaly that hasn't been possible before.

Maybe your the "nine" type though. Happy movie going...
  • saeseetom
Yes, it's big and dramatic, and too 'pretty' - but, I think it will work well at the end of Avatar. I can imagine the emotional climax and then cutting to credits to hear this.

Although the first synthy 15 seconds really do make you cringe. Maybe they'll edit it out for the film...
  • smrtalec
i wonder if she came up with the song too late and Cameron had no other choice but to approve this shitty song and no time to have her write a new one because he's running out of time
  • frelling_cute
I bet everyone would be happy if Kanye was singing it.
    Geez. The song is fine.
  • Alright, maybe it's not cool to say this- but I think this song sounds like all closing songs of credits should- cheesy, overblown, bombastic, with a soaring vocal overtop! I mean, to me, that's kind of what I expect and enjoy at the end of a movie!

thi is going to be used as avatar's 'magic carpet ride' when they fly on dragons, and it will be the dumbest shit OF ALL TIME
  • Ashley P
I couldn't really make out what she was saying and there is no way I will listen to it again to try and figure it out.
  • Kat
This is... not exactly inspiring, but it has potential, if the movie drags you in a lot, to to be inspiring in the right moment. If they mess the timing up, though, it'll just be background noise.
  • Wil
A bad song is a bad song, period, no point of argument there... In the realm of closing credits songs or scores, pardon me, but nothing, absolutely nothing in the last 10 years can compare to the magnificent brilliance of Hans Zimmer-James Newton Howard "A Watchful Guardian", simply EPIC.

Or the beautiful jewel that is "Like a Dog Chasing Cars"
  • e20
Strange, this music sounds like a theme song for a winter popcorn flick directed by James Cameron wait a second, it is. I guess you geeks were expecting tecno, Lil Wayne or some emo rock HAHAHAHAHAHAHAA! Grow up, this sounds like the credit music to every other white bread hollywood movie, why is everyone all sour all of a sudden?
  • iec
don't be a moron. no one was expecting emo rock or techno. there doesn't need to be any terrible pop lyrics in a film score. it doesn't help the film. leave the lyrics out, no one will care.
  • Captain Molotov
Jesus Christ, I couldn't get through more than 40 seconds of it. This doesn't sound like it remotely belongs with this movie at all.

Hey, they've got a week and a half. Maybe if we all complain enough they'll yank it from the credits before it's too late and just leave it on the soundtrack or something.

See what happens when you prematurely suck a movie's dick like we've all been doing for the past however many years?
  • John Debono
Its a cheesy song but I really like Lewis' voice, it certainly isn't laughably bad. You guys are being way too harsh on the poor girl personally.
  • Blame James Horner. He's the one who convinced Cameron for the song.
  • iec
How about blame Cameron for being convinced and not having the nuts to stop someone from throwing shit at his work.
  • This has me worried about FFXIII since she's also singing the game's theme song...
  • maxlaw
Well… opinion are like axxholes, everybody has one. Honestly if I have to choose between the taste of one of the best director of all times and these unhappy people who write this laughable 'reviews' even before watching the final product… you know the answer… good luck with your life.
  • sam
there's not much melody to the song. I wouldn't quite say it's a horrible song, but it's definitely not fit for a movie. It sounds very unorganized and the lyrics are really cheesy not to mention it's almost identical to my heart will go on
  • Anon
It's not great, but I don't find it laughably bad either.

Not the kind if reply you were soliciting. If you pay me, however, I will tell you that it sounds shit.
  • balledmanctwat
Sounds just like a generic credits song. However, it does evoke some nostalgia as I find it reminiscent of a throwback Disney classic movie like The Lion King etc...

So I give it points for that.
  • Propadanda
    I just commented with this and then scrolled down and read yours;

"Haha I thought the exact same thing. There's nothing wrong with it at all, it sounds like a generic credits song, with the appropriate crescendos and shit to evoke emotion."

I think we're meant for each other.
  • starscream9289
Half a billion dollars and THIS is the best they can come up with?
  • Dr_Handsome
I don't entirely get why people are so sure about Avatar and the more the studio tries to shove the movie down my throat the less interested I get but I'm not sure this is as bad as the article's and the readers' comments would suggest. It's typical, boring, and cheesy but it's not ear bleedingly grating or anything.
  • Josh
Like I've said over and over. It's people being negative to be negative. They've already made up their mind on the movie, and can never go back on their pride or word.

It's the cool new thing to be angry and hateful towards anything new.
  • Nick
Great. I'll love listening to this as I clean theaters.
  • Erick
    ouch
  • ryan corderman
    FAIL!

Song seems just ok and I was trying to listen for bits of what the final score will be like, but this seems to throw up a flag re: how much of "Avatar" is going to focus on the "crossing barriers" love story? I'm still seeing this in the theater no matter what, but if they spend anything close to half the running time on CG Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana meeting cute and falling in love, I'll probably be telling others to stay the hell away. One of the reasons behind "Titanic's" success was the love story between two very pretty, real people and Caprio's drawing power amongst the what we'd now call the "Twilight" and rom-com crowd, but that's not the case here.
  • John
For a brief second, at the beginning, I thought this was DJ Encore's "I see right through to you"

I would've preferred that to this but maybe it fits with the final scene of the film and doesn't seem as out of place as it is now.
  • SAI 9to5
I didn't think it was all that bad at all. Not my type of music really, but if the movie is fairly emotional at the end like Sigourney said it was, this seems like it will fit really well. Definitely not a bad singer.
  • sarah
"all the colours of love ..." - let me gues: she feels blue, right?
  • god i just don't know...

So much hate in the world....

I think the song is all right, and whilst i'm not a fan of Leona Lewis (just not my cup of tea) you can't deny she has talent. Have you heard her version of cars?

Listen, i'm not defending the movie, I haven't seen it yet so can't pass judgement, and for all I know the song might be a perfect fit but just sounds a little weak as it's taken out of context. Most James Bond tunes are pretty average, but when listened to with the opening credits take on a life of there own.

    Just my opinion.
  • Bull
I will pay to watch Avatar.....but this shit sucks.
  • greggorybasore
With everyone rushing to cement their opinion of the song as fact I think it's time to enter the fray.... and declare this song to be... all right!
  • asdf
whats with the hate? It sounds so obviously like an End Credits song.

There was nothing wrong with any of the songs used in the credits in Lord of the Rings, and there is nothing wrong with this either.
  • Propadanda
Haha I thought the exact same thing. There's nothing wrong with it at all, it sounds like a generic credits song, with the appropriate crescendos and shit to evoke emotion.

    Calm the fuck down everyone.
  • The songs in LOTR were quite good and suited each film. Of course I haven't seen Avatar yet, but this just seems like a relic from a 90s blockbuster. "My heart will go on part 2". Who knows, maybe it will sound a lot better after the film....I doubt it though.
  • tricky808
God..... I wanted to really like this song, even after reading negative comments before hand...I REALLY TRIED MAN! It's very sad that this was allowed within 100 feet of the avatar movie.
  • MadmanMundt
Its like someone told her to remix My Heart Will Go On but awful
  • george
this song fits in with the movie. i think it does. since the movie is all animated and stuff..
  • shes overrated
  • Hazza
Like it or not, Titanic's had a powerful hook that any idiot could replicate: NEEEEEAR, FAAAAAAAR, WhereEEEEEEEVER you ARRRRRRRRE!

I couldn't work out any of the lyrics, even as it was playing
  • marissa
    ''laughably bad''

what a biased article.it's definitely influencing the comments that are coming in.

if someone unknown sings this song instead of a mainstream artist (but talented) the comments would not be as harsh.

i'm liking the song more and more everytime i hear it- it may be 'generic' but the structure of the song is definitely not predictable liek my heart will go on,AND i'm excited for the movie.it's not impossible to like both, but of course some people have to be negative and exaggerate....
  • Jim
Marissa, its called a blog, not a news website. Blogs are opinion based, and yes, sometimes biased. But Peter has been one of the few people sticking up for Avatar at every turn. The fact that he hated the song, shows that he is the opposite of biased.
  • keesvd
I want The Killers for this, they could suit better.
Imagine 'Are we human, or are we Na'vi?'
    Now that's a title song.
