Just when you thought there was nothing more outta-left-field this week than a Mickey Rourke rap anthem: here is the first clip from David Cross’s new TV pilot, The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret. Back in June, we first reported on Cross’s hopeful series about corporate hell co-starring Spike Jonze and Will Arnett, but we had since chalked it off to wet dream delirium. Cross, who directed and wrote the pilot, had taken note as well, referring to the mediocre cast as a “crazy dream team.” Unfortunately, only dear readers in Blighty (and /Film’s dearest Brendon) are privy to the entire pilot via the UK’s Channel 4. For the rest of us law-abiding denizens, the three minute expletive-blizzard found after the jump ranks with the dwarf in In Bruges as pretty damn funny.

Official Synopsis:

US comedian David Cross plays Todd Margaret, a hapless office drone who flukes his way into a top management job heading up the British division of a US multinational. All he has to do is sell a dozen container loads of dodgy Korean energy drinks before his psychotic boss, played by Will Arnett, visits in a week’s time. It doesn’t help that he knows nothing about the UK or selling things.

What’s more, he only has one very unhelpful employee, played by Russell Tovey, to assist him. Needless to say, it doesn’t go well and Todd’s spectacular failure to impress beautiful café owner Alice, played by Sharon Horgan, only makes things worse.

So, the first half of the synopsis is depicted in the clip, and basically serves as Todd Margaret’s origin tale. Jonze plays Margaret’s fey and fired supervisor and Will Arnett plays an uber-exfoliated Darth Vader in a suit. Thanks to Erik Davis at Cinematical for the heads up about this. Not shown are Brits Horgan and Tovey, both of whom are rising comedic talents. Channel 4 doesn’t offer any info on its website per plans for further episodes, but how fucking insane/cheap do they have to be not to give Cross the go-ahead with this diamond studded chariot? We’ll update accordingly.

Cross’s use of a telephone to illustrate the inanity of corporate hierarchy reminded me of a classic sketch from his days creating Mr. Show with Bob and David

What did you think of your first look at The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret’s skull candle?

  • I really enjoyed it, the best of the new comedy showcases so far, Rusell Tovey is excellent as the assistant, and I had two or three laugh out loud moments... the scene where he's overdosed on energy drinks during a sales pitch in a cafe and offers to "fuck the old out of you" to some elderly women was really priceless, as was the final scene where he passes out and pisses himself. The script is never going to win a Nobel prize for literature, but did it make me laugh?... Yes.

I totally agree. One of the better things to come out in some time. So funny... I'm reminded a bit of Nathan Barley.

It was good but it needs a better title--that's one of those titles that you don't like saying because of how long and cumbersome it is.

    -What are you doing tonight?
-Oh, I was just going to watch this new show.
    -Cool, what's it called?
    -The Increasingly Poor Deci-
    -ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

The pilot from the makers of Green Wing was the best I have seen yet of the comedy showcase. Campus I believe it was called. The phone shop one was the worst piece of sitcom I have ever seen in my life. Annoying characters, rubbish gags... The Amazing Dermot was quite good I have to say - Far too many Noel Edmonds jokes in that particular episode though. Hah.

I live in London and I find that all of the Comedy Showcase shows rely too much on swearing and stupid voices. That said, the best one so far is probably Todd Margret, as it actually has a likeable character at its centre. The characters in Campus were all really heinous.
  • Mattikus
You are right in saying that the characters are heinous. They are completely disgusting people for the most part. But I find that funny alongside the surrealist humour in it. It's all down to personal taste really.

Seen it. It wasnt great. Shame.

Arnett and Jonze are only it for that opening sequence and the rest plays out as unfunny screeching.

Maybe it needs time to breathe a bit?

On the British side, cant say I like either Horgan or Tovey.

Toveys character ruined it for me. The shows called "The Increasingly Poor Decisions of...", not "The Merciless Pisstaking of..."

David Cross played 5-10 minutes of this show on his tour this year. It was pretty much what the clip above has, plus some. He definitely made it sound like there was going to be a season's worth of it. I think the fact that he was proud of it (unlike "Run, Ronnie, Run" and "David Has Problems") says something as well. I for one am looking forward to it.

I think horrible is the best word to describe it. Was a shame. But then the Comedy Showcases are almost always terrible. That being said, just saw The Amazing Dermot, with Rhys Darby, and thought that was pretty damn good. Also, in Todd Margaret there's a random, very brief cameo from the stalker from Flight of the Conchords. So guess if there is a whole series from it, which I doubt, she might have a part in it.

Kristen Schaal definitely wasn't in it.
  • dan
Oh yes she was. Check the scene with David Cross trying to get into the cafe with his luggage.

Holy fuck Hunter.. you are the only reason I don't delete this site from my bookmarks. Thank you so much.

P.S. Could you please hire a hobo to stab Russ Ficher in the neck with a crack pipe... and then video tape him screaming/ bleeding to death in the street and upload it to liveleak so I can masturbate to it?

    Do me a solid.
    I'll pay it forward.
  • freemachine
DAMN! That's pretty cold blooded! Russ isn't that bad of a writer...now if you had said Connelly, then that's a different story.

Have to disagree I loved Arrested Development and am a fan of all concerned but this show was bad, bad, BAD.
  • Mattikus
It was amazingly funny. It was done as part of a series of pilots for different comedy shows on Channel 4. This has been one of the funniest so far. I hope they do make a full-blown series.
  • dagreenman18
It's David Cross, Spike Jonze, and Will Arnett. What the hell do you think we think? Why isn't this here now.
  • I want this show, NOW!
  • shoothamaguchi
You can find the torrent by looking for comedy showcase season2 episode 3.
I don't think you will enjoy it as much as you're hoping to. It's not that great.
  • Derek
Thanks! I was able to download the show this morning because of your post.
  • Goobity
Holy hell. I just taped a blank check to my door so it'll be ready the second I hear about a stateside DVD release.

Not really, but you know. :)
This looks fantastic, I want more, etc.
  • I hate to be a buzz kill but from that five minute sketch it doesn't look that good. The joke was overstretched to be honest but 5 minutes doesnt make a bad series so if channel four take it up then i might be tempted.
  • Yeah, definitely not up to stuff coming from someone as seasoned as David Cross.
  • Goobity
The phrase you're intending is 'up to snuff'...
    And yes, it is.
  • naw, i don't think it is.
  • Tetsuo_Man
Your opinion is wrong. This statement is a fact.
