Can’t you just hear the headline quote above intoned in The Dude’s spacey tones? You may have heard about the fact that Iron Man came together more or less without a solid script, but according to Jeff Bridges it was definitely ‘less.’ Read his take on the shoot, which essentially sounds like the actors and Jon Favreau improvised big segments of the movie, after the break.

In Contention has a long, fantastic interview with Bridges that both highlights his current work in Crazy Heart and acts as a serious career overview. The most attention-getting stuff in there relates to Iron Man, however. How so? Check it:

“They had no script, man! They had an outline,” says Bridges. “We would show up for big scenes every day and we wouldn’t know what we were going to say.” In Contention’s Kris Tapley summarizes some of the actor’s description of the process:

Bridges, director Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr. would literally act out sequences during primitive rehearsals, Downey taking on Bridges’s role and vice versa, to find and essentially improvise their way to full scenes, the actor recounts. Bridges says that the entire production was probably saved by the improv prowess of the film’s director and star.

The process, according to Bridges, was a product of the modern practice of setting a release date before anything else is in place. Basically, the movie had to be made, and was going to be made, and that’s that. Marvel guys would throw some input suggesting what the characters would or wouldn’t say, and otherwise it sounds very seat of the pants.

I hate to distract from Crazy Heart, which should really be the topic here, but what this all leads to is a deeper appreciation of Jon Favreau and Robert Downey, Jr. A few blockbusters have gone before cameras in the last few years with shaky scripts or no script, and none have come out even vaguely as entertaining as Iron Man. If Bridges isn’t exaggerating (always possible) I’m even more impressed with the behind the scenes work than I had been to begin with.

  • So, was he like, bashing it?
  • Octoberist
    doesn't really sound like it.

I'm sure he loved working on the movie, but of course there was an uncertainty of the final product and that alone probably left a lot of people in the dark.
  • samboni
it sounds more like hes bashing the studios for deciding the release date before a script is even written
  • Octoberist
    ah, i missed it.
  • He peed on their fucking script.
  • Octoberist
It might be the tone of his statement, but aren't you over exaggerating a bit?
  • Nic
I think that was a reference to the Big Lebowski.
  • Jason
    /facepalm
  • Octoberist
    ahhhhhhhhhhh
  • Gunny
That script really tied the room together.
  • Shut the fuck up Gunny.
  • Someone's a Dude & Walter fan.
  • GORT
I don't understand how something worth $150 million gets going without a script.
  • dashiel
transformers 1 & 2 did pretty well and they clearly didn't have scripts
  • OH YOU!
  • Adrian
    nice
  • ericlarson
    I pray this is sarcasm.
  • lipslikeasukal
Your wish is my command. Shazzam! Consider it sarcasm'd.
  • tim
Ha Ha Ha, Yessssssss!!! dashiel, your my new hero. That right there was the best rip of the year. I'm jealous i didn't come up with it. I couldn't agree more, i'm actually having a hard time typing since i'm still laughing.

The third Pirates flick didn't have a script at all before they went into shooting. I remember seeing a making of, where they showed the creation of the final battle sequence. They were spending millions on it and they only had an idea of what would happen.

Spider-Man 3's script changed dramatically during shooting as well. Check out the commentary on that disk.

Neither are good examples of the practice, but then again, going into battle without a script isn't a good idea to start with.
  • super_aj
The Bourne Ultimatum is a good example of that too. They were shooting scenes sometimes without knowing how the movie was gonna end or the next scene would start.
  • Rat Basterd
Now I'm more impressed with the first 30 minutes. The rest of it still sucks.
  • starscream9289
Yeah, well that's just like your opinion, man.
  • Wickedrebel
Kris Tapley! What a bastard! Just kidding, good friend of mine from Film School! Good for you bro!
  • JON FAVREAU WAS ABLE TO WRITE THIS ON THE SET!!!

    ...WITH PEN AND PAPER!!!
  • But it wasn't in a cave now was it?
  • Federico
Well, Marvel Movie Studios are STILL starting out, so you COULD say.......
  • daveed
Interesting. Perhaps that's what made the film so more entertaining, more human, than expected. Less chance of killing the story through endless story conferences, studio notes, rounds of drafts and so on.
  • no wonder i thought iron man was bad.
  • Rick_Dickulous
I thought it kind of showed. It seemed really tight until after he escapes the cave and then it kind of meanders. The villain and his motives are not particularly well defined and the conclusion is a little too abrupt.

Still was a very entertaining flick but hearing this doesn't come as a big surprise either.
  • Totally agree. I actually didn't like the film all that much after the first 30 minutes. You could tell something was slightly off with the script. I felt like I was the only person last year who didn't think very highly of the film.
  • MonsterKilledThePilot
You're not alone, dude. The film was great, but it was very overrated. The ending was kinda weak. Fingers crossed for a bitchin sequel.
  • Did you see the intended ending where Iron Monger gets hit by a bus then the credits role? Yeah, the ending they gave us was way better so I'm not complaining at all.
  • Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
  • MickJ
Hahaha, gotta love Lebowski quotes. Never gets old.
  • Thanks for the link, guys. FYI, I added the audio file of our chat so you can hear that Dude-ish intoning.

Now to figure out who Wickedrebel is...
  • RussFischer
Cool, Kris, nice to know about the audio. I'll check it out.
  • [A]
I take it most of you DID NOT see the dvd extras. Which means you probably downloaded it.. kidding, kidding -- but they talk a lot about improvising, "independent feel", all that stuff -- check it out
  • RussFischer
Favreau talked a lot about the 'independent feel' while promoting the film in general, and the cast talked about having the freedom to do on-set improvising. But that usually means 'improvising with and around an existing script,' not 'making stuff up because there is no script.' Two totally different things.
  • JKW3000
Not having a solid script doesn't matter if you've got good talent involved. Last I remembered, this one movie didn't have a finished script either, particularly an ending. I think it was called Casablanca. Or something.

At any rate, it's not like there were that many memorable lines in the film...just a solid job by RDJ (who looked like he had fun with the role) and a director who's done the acting thing before. Kudos to them.
  • This all makes sense now. For me, Iron Man was never the orgasm-inducing blockbuster that it seemed to be for most people. While I thought it was VERY well made and had a good story, it felt very "safe"... no risks taken (other than updating the origin). And now I know why, they had no script! Kudos to Favreau for making it work.
  • EbonPinion
The origin wasn't updated for the movie. The original version of the origin story was retconned in '05 I think it was by the Extremis story arc. That's the Marvel-official version now.
  • mchops
script or not Iron Man was still the shit! cry all you haters!
  • You sound like a Twilight Fan.
  • Interesting.
  • affirmallchance
you guys were creaming all over this movie when it came out and now bridges shares this little tidbit and its all, "right, something felt a little off..." get over yourselves. bunch a sheep.
  • And why exactly did you reply to PJ Edwards comment?
  • affirmallchance
didn't realize, but you know who i mean.
  • Yeah i do. Have to agree. Though i'm one of the few people who said in the beginning: Yeah it's nice but something's missing.
  • affirmallchance
that's actually pretty big of you.
