exam

Stuart Hazeldine’s high-concept, low-budget thriller single-room real-time feature debut Exam premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival back in August. QuietEarth calls the plot “Cube meets The Apprentice”. Here is the official plot synopsis:

Eight talented candidates have reached the final stage of selection to join the ranks of a mysterious and powerful corporation. Entering a windowless room, an Invigilator gives them eighty minutes to answer one simple question. He outlines three rules they must obey or be disqualified: don’t talk to him or the armed guard by the door, don’t spoil their papers and don’t leave the room. He starts the clock and leaves. The candidates turn over their question papers, only to find they’re completely blank.

I’ve always been a fan of minimalistic single-location stories, from Hard Candy to Saw, Jonathan Liebesman’s The Killing Room to most recently, Paranormal Activity. The trailer is now online thanks to Empire, and embedded after the jump. As always, leave your thoughts in the comments below.

why do I feel like they just ruined the end of the movie in the trailer?!
  • Terrible ad, like above said, they ruined probably all the best parts and the ending. Just like the trailer to Paranormal Activity spoiled the ending...pathetic!
  • I wish I had not seen the trailer. I think they did spoil the best parts. At least The Killing Room trailer got it right.

Now I know what will happen in this film. No mystery.

I found it pretty vague compared to what's become the standard: the 3 minute movie. This also seems like a film you'd get alot more within context than "Ah man! I knew it from the trailer!"

The killing room was great...just watched it last night. Wont watch the trailer to this because movies like these are best when you have no idea whats going on.
  • existenz
I'm looking forward to it. Wish that I hadn't watched the trailer though.

Great trailer! In 2 minutes and change I went from mildly curious to grinning with excitement!
  • Luis Enrique
The Method, an Argentinian-Spanish movie from 2005, is very similar in plot to this movie. Too similar, I would say.

    see for yourselves: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0427582/
  • Wow, just watch the trailer for the method and i have to say this remind me a lot like "the stranger" and "them". Both movies are so similar, but not really a remake. The Trailer almost has the exact same dialogue too.
  • Luis Enrique
The basic idea is the same for sure. Even so, I wouldn`t go as far as saying that we have an "unofficial remake" or something like that. The Method is a much more psychological, character-and-dialog-driven movie and has a postapocalyptic plot which seems to be absent in Exam. In the end, it is the adaptation of an excellent play (even better than the movie, btw, which is very good). Also Exam seems to take a much more violent approach. I just have the feeling that Exam is nothing but an unoriginal bastardization of The Method.
  • Awesome. If they actually stay within that room for the entire duration of the movie, without digressing into seemingly random flashbacks, it will be what I expected "Saw" to be before watching it.

    TOTALLY agree :P

    looks fucking brill. i'm sold.

    Color me interested.

TERRIBLE trailer. Spoilt the ending - or at least a key moment. Cool idea though.
  • I prefer the idea of a trailer teasing at what could be, enticing you to want to see more WITHOUT needing to show you snippets of every argument, gun-fling, punch and one-liner... *sigh*. Looked damn interesting until the last 30 seconds or so.

It's original, sign me up!! I'm tired of all the dam n remakes that hollywood is churning out, it's always refreshing to see new stuff.
  • Exactly what I was thinking #2 I feel like they just told me the ending but thought we wouldnt really catch it cause it was a split second shot. It just looks very predictable but maybe itll pull a usual suspects moment and be totally awesome.
  • MickJ
Hm I hope the revealed plot point (I still have no idea what it is) is actually just incredibly misleading to set the ending up. That'd be nice for a change.
  • MickJ
Glad I checked the comments then, not gonna watch the trailer. The premise alone sounds intriguing enough. Is it really that difficult to cut a trailer without revealing anything significant to the plot? I wonder if the director has any say or if it's all the marketing department.
  • RainMan
    Meh.
  • Muffin7
i fail to see how they would go so crazy over the course of 80 minutes. I mean, one would think it would be like at least 20 minutes of uncomfortable silence at first, then maybe some awkward tension from a guy trying to make a few jokes, maybe one of the guys tries to hit on one of the girls, then they get to talking, a few friendly bonds are made, they discuss what's up with the blank paper for a bit and then BAM! 80 minutes is over.
How these people get to the extremes shown in the video with those simple words is something that I now MUST find out. Dammit, I'm sold.

I don't know, I was so in love with The Killing Room that I feel like this is just too similar to it to possibly be nearly as good. But I guess I'll probably still see it.
  • Keith Lynch
i watched this movie at Raindance Film Festival a couple of months back and it's INCREDIBLE! Really really damn awesome. So clever. And it does stay in that one room for the ENTIRE movie. You get a little glimpse into the white corridor leading to the room but that's it!

Truly genius piece of filmmaking. And Luke Malby is going to be a star. Everyone is good in this movie but he just exudes star quality.
  • This looks very interesting. I don't see how they could have spoiled anything though. I bet you won't remember anything from the trailer by the time the movie comes out and without any context from the movie itself it was just a series of extremely vague character interactions.

I'll see it though. Can't wait.
  • Money_Talks
Looks great...hopefully a tense movie. Thank god for the pause button
  • greggorybasore
Well now... if ever there was a trailer that put a flick on my MUST SEE! list...
  • Zach
This seems to ape the concept of the Method but does not seem nearly as interesting. The Method was interesting because it was about psychological interaction between people and how we reveal our flaws and weaknesses. This copies the concept of the first Saw (a room that seems simple but holds secrets) and meshes it with this. We'll see
