Thomas Balmes’ Documentary Babies Movie Trailer

Babies

Focus Features has released the trailer for Thomas Balmes‘ documentary Babies online. Based on an original idea by Alain Chabat, Babies simultaneously follows four babies around the world - from birth to first steps.

The children are, respectively, in order of on-screen introduction: Ponijao, who lives with her family near Opuwo, Namibia; Bayarjargal, who resides with his family in Mongolia, near Bayanchandmani; Mari, who lives with her family in Tokyo, Japan; and Hattie, who resides with her family in the United States, in San Francisco. Re-defining the nonfiction art form, Babies joyfully captures on film the earliest stages of the journey of humanity that are at once unique and universal to us all.

So basically its cute overload the movie. But seriously, I really like the concept, but I wonder if the movie can deliver on the premise. Will it be more about the experience of the parents? I wonder what stories can be told in that early stage in a baby’s life. Watch the trailer embedded after the jump.

Babies will open in select cities domestically on Friday, April 16th 2010.

  • I have a feeling this movie could be huge. MARCH OF THE PENGUINS anyone?

Damn, I thought those two first babies were CGI.

I agree, the concept of the movie is pretty neat, and I will go see this just because Focus Features is behind it and I like to support indie films. But still, it seems like making a documentary is the new "in thing" right now. Babies? Really? This reminds me of Earth but replacing the cubs with actual human children.

If I wanted to, I'm sure I could cull all the footage that I have of my baby from the last 10 months and make one cute 2hrs film. Though I'll waste countless hours editing and have only a very limited audience demographic to show it to.

So, instead, I'll get them to watch this movie.

Maybe I should run around with a camera following babies and make a movie... Big deal. I saw my daughter's first steps, which is a bigger deal to me than watching someone else's kid...

Wow. Have so many people have been indoctrinated to view new life as mundane and boring? It's too bad so many of these responses are full of lukewarm welcome and unwaranted exasperation: "Who cares?", "Big deal." Really?

If art is concerned with what it means to be human, surely the first years of life are just as big a deal as the later ones--if not moreso.

I can't wait, personally. Good on you, filmmakers, for your focus on this underrated miracle.

I dont think this is only cute and sweet. Its a look anthropologically(?) at how differently children are raised around the world. There is a lot to learn from other cultures.
