Roman Polanski Given Bail in Switzerland

It’s only been a couple weeks since we reported on the slow-boiling case of former fugitive director Roman Polanski, but there’s a bit of significant news today. After he has stewed in jail for almost two months (doesn’t seem like much, after having decades of freedom) Swiss courts have finally granted bail to Polanski. $4.5m is what will see him transferred from jail to house arrest in his Swiss chalet. It’s not happening immediately, but that bail move, together with recent statements by Polanski’s US lawyers, suggests that maybe he’s ready to face the court and get this over with.

The AP report says Swiss courts have ten days, during which Polanski will remain in jail, to appeal the bail grant. But Swiss officials don’t seem interested in refusing the grant at this point, even though he’s still considered a high flight risk. Spokesmen for the Ministry say they decision about whether or not to appeal will be made quickly. Guess $4.5m seems like enough money to keep him in one place.

But the weird thing was earlier this week, when Polanski’s legal team in LA overrode all statements by his French lawyer, who they say wasn’t authorized to speak about the case. The French attorney, Herve Temime, had said that Polanski would not voluntarily return to the States to face his case. But a Reuters report says ” Los Angeles attorneys Douglas Dalton, Bart Dalton and Chad Hummel said in a statement that Temime’s comments were not authorized by Polanski.” Their statement asserts that the French legal team “[does] not represent him in the case and do not speak for him about it.”

What does that mean? The implication seems to be that Polanski’s team is more open to the idea of a voluntary return than had previously seemed possible. But for now, assuming that the Swiss justice ministry doesn’t overturn the grant of bail, he’ll have the option to kick back at home while he waits for the extradition process to occur. That seems like a bad idea — a voluntary return is going to engender a more positive reception — but at least this suggests some more realistic approach to the case on the part of him and his lawyers.

He is a PROVEN flight risk, for god's sake. Tie the nasty fucker down and put him away for a long, long time.

I wonder if he ever tried to fuck Rosemary's baby?
  • You're an idiot...
  • Hostile
Hey, I'm just reminding people he's a kiddy fucker. A lot of his apologists seem to be completely forgetting that we're discussing a violent rapist here.
  • tw
guy deserves every bit of jail time he gets and anyone who defends him is ignorant as fuck. crime is crime whether it happened yesterday or 40 years ago.

then again he's a celeb and we all know the rules dont apply to them.

The guy was sentenced, he served his time then he was fucked in the ass by judge rittenbaum. Can't say that the punishment doesn't fit the crime but that's not how the criminal system is supposed to work. He did something stupid and he paid the price. He served his state appointed punishment and has proven himself "rehabilitated".
  • He wasn't "fucked in the ass by judge rittenbaum." But he did fuck a little girl in the ass. A child he drugged and then had anal sex with despite her repeated pleas for him to stop. You think a metaphorical fucking in the ass is the same as a literal fucking in the ass? You're a moron.

Can't say that the punishment doesn't fit the crime but that's not how the criminal system is supposed to work.

You have a hard time picking up on irony don't you.

A metaphorical ass fucking can do just as much damage and on a wider scale.
  • "Can't say that the punishment doesn't fit the crime but that's not how the criminal system is supposed to work.

I never quoted that sentence in my reply. And you don't understand what the word "irony" means. Buy a dictionary. And don't try to hide behind the "I didn't really mean what I posted" cop-out. You remain a moron.

"A metaphorical ass fucking can do just as much damage and on a wider scale."

As a literal ass fucking? You are a real jerk. Continue hiding behind your pseudonym, but you are a real jerk. Does your mom know you're on her computer again?

Walker, don't feed the troll. ;)
  • I'm so sick and tired of heasring that testimony being treated like it's undeniable fact. That part of the case was dropped, it was never looked into. Saying everything happened exactly like she said it did, is just like saying Polanski was innocent, because he testified he was innocent. Witness testimonies are not automatically fact.

Also people who think that because he did something bad he couldn't be fucked by Rittenbaum are idiots. Seriously if you do bad thigs the magic of karma makes all the evil done to you right? WTF?

I'm really suprised how many people comment they story they don't know shit about.
  • Marc
There never was a sentence. There was a plea bargain. And Polanski left the United States before any sentence was pronounced (there was also no absentia at any point). That's a difference.

Means: By now, Polanski is not even official convicted for any crime.

Like it or not. I'm just recapitulate the facts.

What I don't understand in this whole Polanski case: Why now after 30 years? Of course he has to stand the charges in front of a judge. But why at this very moment? Polanski owns a chalet in Switzerland for god's sake! He was there quite regularly. He was travelling all over Europe for shooting his movies. His whereabouts never were any secret at all. There were plenty of opportunities to get him arrested. Is there a new district attorney in Los Angeles who wants to make a name for himself with a big case or something like this?

I totally agree that he has to stand the charges. I just don't get the timing.
  • He was NOT sentenced, he has served no time. He was waiting for the sentencing when he fled.
  • tw
She testified that Polanski gave her a combination of champagne and quaaludes, a sedative drug and muscle relaxant, and despite repeated protests and being asked to stop, he performed oral sex, intercourse and sodomy upon her

anyone defending this guy needs to get a serious reality check, as for his "accountability" he made a plea bargain aka bought his way out of jail so fuck this guy he should burn for what he did
  • walkerjjwhatdoyougot
If there is a hell he may. But wasting resources, vast resources, to put this guy in trail AGAIN is too much. Retaliation, rehabilitation, deterrence and public safety are the main reasons to put someone in PRISON or JAIL. Roman Polanski has been REHABILITATED whatever caused his incredibly stupid and ILLEGAL acts he has faced and delt with. He has proven over the last thirty years that he is no threat to the public. Which only leaves the big "R" RETALIATION, the only one many seem to care about. I get it but in this case where even the victim has declared enough is enough and forgiven him his past perhaps its time to do the same, Im just not that thirsty for this guys blood.

I have a better idea: Let's put him in a gas chamber. Irony of fate, you know? Don't even wait for a sentence! Who needs justice? Vigilantism is the better solution, right?

It's really a joke that someone like you speaks about "reality check"... Where did you grow up?
  • tw
id love to know how i need a reality check when the reality is that

    1. he drugged and raped an underaged girl
    2. Settled outside of court to avoid serious jail time

soo the lesson here is rich person gets off because he is rich. I dont know where you seem to think that im promoting some kind of vigilante justice on this guy but then again you're probably part of that crowd that thinks just because this guy made some great movies he should be forgiven.

i dono where you grew up but where i grew up thats fucked up shit.
  • Marc
Where I am coming from we don't burn people since Middle Ages and we also believe that there has to be a judgment before punishment.

So yes, if this sounds strange for you, please do a reality check---
  • A testimony is not automatically fact. I'm not trying to defend what he did, but don't quote the exact details of a testimony that was never looked into as undeniable fact.
  • yer
This means he gets to finish The Ghost. YAY! I could care less what he's done. Art > morals.
  • Hostile
It's a disgusting shame on film enthusiasts when there are those among us who will go to such gross and illogical stretches of the imagination in order to excuse a director's horrendous actions. It makes us all look like petty, immoral swine.
