Shrek Forever After will be the Last Shrek Sequel

Shrek Forever After

DreamWorks Animation has premiered the first photos from Shrek Forever After in Wednesday’s edition of USA Today. One of them can be seen above, the other (of Donkey), can be seen in the linked article. There are a bunch of new tidbits revealed in the article, including the story details, information of when we can expect the first trailer and new casting. We’ve rounded up all the tiny details, after the jump.

  • Shrek Forever After will be the last Shrek sequel and will conclude the story, hence the film’s title — which isn’t just a play on the number 4. Of course, this isn’t including spinoff films like Puss in Boots). And who are they kidding? Dreamworks will probably eventually make another Shrek film — the franchise is too popular not to.
  • The first trailer will premiere on December 18th 2009 attached to prints of James Cameron’s Avatar. This makes sense since Shrek Forever After is a 3D film, and Avatar will provide the biggest theatrical 3D audience to date.
  • The story is a mashup of The Brothers Grimm and It’s a Wonderful Life: “Shrek is feeling over-domesticated. He has lost his roar.” “To regain his ogre mojo, he strikes a deal with Rumpelstiltskin,” but “the pact goes awry and Shrek must confront what life would be like in Far Far Away if he had never existed. That translates into Donkey being forced into cart-pulling duty, fat and lazy Puss in Boots trading his sword for a pink bow and the underhanded Rumpelstiltskin ruling the kingdom.”
  • Kathy Griffin and Kristin Schaal (Flight of the Conchords) are witches who hunt ogres.
  • Jon Hamm (Mad Men) voices the best-looking ogre you’ve ever seen, the leader of an underground resistance group.

Retitled from Shrek Goes Fourth, Shrek Forever After is directed by Mike Mitchell (Duce Bigelow, Surviving Christmas, Sky High), and features the original all-star cast of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and Antonio Banderas.  Shrek Forever After hits theaters on May 21st, 2010.

  • What in god's name is that terrible monkey man thing that is now sure to haunt tonight's dreams.
  • i think its gollum before finding the ring, also this movie will probably suck :(
  • sanyo
    Probably?
  • Man, Kristin Schaal is rocking the animation circuit - Shrek 4 and Toy Story 3 within a month of each other!

I haven't been bothered to see the 3rd one yet, but did quite like the first 2. Is Shrek the Third any good?

    No, it's not.
  • Kees
If Shrek 2 is Scary Movie 3, Shrek 3 is Scary Movie 4. Let's put it that way.
  • shadow
It's complete garbage, keep you good memories of the first 2.

Also with that director I really don't have much hope for this film either.

Don't worry. There's going to be a fifth titled "Shrek Five: Still alive". After you NOT watch the third and the fourth, you can NOT watch the fifth.

The sixth is title "Shrek Six: Hollywood can s@#$ ogre ----!"
  • Are you kidding me?! I would put my money on there being a fifth "Shrek" film. If they can make five "Rocky" movies, they can make a fifth "Shrek".

As for the trailer being attached to prints of "Avatar". . . technically since the 3D version of "Avatar" will be released digitally, there will be no prints. Just hard drives containing digital files that get added to playlists delivered through projectors by digital cinema servers. I'm just sayin'!

Thanks for the heads up on the new "Shrek". Hope it's better than the third iteration which was kinda boring. Actually, I've completely forgotten it at this point.

Actually...there are 6 Rocky movies. Just no one remembers Rocky V.
  • Is it just me or does that kid have exactly the face of Danny Boyle?
  • I laughed. So. Hard.

I don't think I can get excited for another Shrek film.

    Not after the third one.
  • I think they're more counting on the kids and their parents going to see it. And they will. In droves.
  • Oh god. Please say... it's true, that they'l be over after this!! Augh. I hate the Shrek films.

    "

No, it's awful, trust me. Do not waste money on Shrek the Turd.

The donkey-pic, that's not new. I'm glad they got rid of Timberlake, he can't even f#cking act when more than half of the work has been done for him.
  • Thank God this is going to be the last one. Dreamworks milked this cash cow for far too long.
  • saeseetom
Even though I have very, very little interest in this film, I somehow feel good that this will be the last Shrek film.

I think it's because I see cinema as one big history, and the sooner Hollywood ends these screen-clogging nightmare cash-ins (see Shrek 3!) , the better.
  • yes its about time they end the series in full glory..but tis movie better be good...

I liked it better when it was called "Shrek Goes Fourth"
As much as they've milked the franchise, I enjoyed the 3rd almost as much as the first so I'll see this one.
  • TVN
It's good to see that the original cast members are returning. And that little dude near leaning on Shrek, will he be as annoying as Donkey was in the first movie?

And will we actually see where Donkey and Dragon live? After all they do have kids.

...Wasn't Paul "F*ck you, John" McCartney involved in this?
  • charles
    Thank you Lord. Thank you.

I really think the lack of enjoyment regarding Shrek The Third may limit the box office potential of Forever After. If parents have other options, they may just pop in a DVD and wait for Toy Story 3 or another summer movie.
