Avatar

With an ever-ballooning hypothetical budget, it almost feels as if some are waiting to pull a “toldja!” if Avatar ends up being a massive flop for Fox. But apparently, they’re not too worried. According to Reuters, Fox Filmed Entertainment chairman Jim Gianopulos says the $500 million budget predictions are “ridiculous”, and he has “no doubt” that the film will ultimately turn a profit.

Gianopulos’s full response to the $500 budget:

That’s a ridiculous number. It has actually no relationship to the actual cost of the movie. People keep repeating a number, which was as if you added the cost of building the studio 80 years ago to the cost of Avatar.

The movie was quite expensive, there is no question about that. But viewed now, from the perspective of its completion and having seen it, it’s a formidable work and money well spent.

As for profit, he points to the film’s 8,000 3D screens and 16,000 2D screens worldwide, and is quick to mention that audiences will be paying a premium for the 3D experience. And let’s not forget that Fox isn’t going into this film alone, they received help with the budget from private equity firms Dune Entertainment and Ingenious Media. As we reported previously, the New York Times believes that they could be covering 60% of the film’s cost.

While Gianopulos may be confident about theater returns, he concedes that DVD and Blu-ray sales have dropped about 13%. This isn’t a catastrophic scenario as some have predicted, but it will certainly factor into their calculations for the film’s returns.

Quite honestly, he could be bluffing about the budget to manageĀ  the severity of Avatar’s failure if it does flop. (And I don’t think we’ll ever see the true numbers for the film if it does.) At this point, I’m less concerned about Avatar’s box office potential and more so with the quality of the film. After waiting such a long time for another action epic from Cameron, I’d be far more disappointed if he delivered a crappy film that performed well at the box office, instead of one that was legitimately good but tanked with moviegoers.

  • ugh, I really hope it tanks at the box office. I think it looks just awful. Lame (unoriginal) story, and everything looks overly unimpressive...

    Not excited at all.
  • CRASHkennedy
dood, cameron apparently spent ten years working on this and all you can do is bash it?? give him some respect for at least sticking with it.
  • gigaherc
Please die, assuming the whole plot from trailer moron.
  • clarencesomerset
But it is. And that's not the point. Cameron's contribution will be technological rather than in story-telling. If he achieves what he set out to do, the tech he developed for the film could well revolutionize film making. But the story? Not so.
  • turok1134
You hope a movie you've only seen clips of tanks? Let me use your brand of logic against you. I hope you never have any success in life, judging by your post, you're just awful.
  • Tetsuo_Man
His opinion on a movie = his life. That makes PERFECT sense.

/film commenters are a different breed of stupidity.
  • turok1134
The point was to make an equally stupid analogy to prove a point. High five for misunderstanding.
  • quintushalls
now see which pot is calling the kettle black!
  • Your Mama
you'll never know until you see it, dickwad.
  • CRASHkennedy
500 million for a movie?? how about sending a few million towards michael cera so we can get this arrested development movie rolling
  • DraganM
    How about reading a article?
  • CRASHkennedy
    how about linking an article?
  • CRASHkennedy
oh hold on, from what i can remember, i think cera said he's on board or something.....or was that just a rumor??

i think the last update on the film was that a script was being written??

If New Moon can rake in $140mil, I'm confident Avatar will a monstrous hit at the box office.
  • Chuck Bartowski
Dude, New Moon was propelled massively by an unstoppable army of lusty tweenage girls. and 23 year old chicks who are stuck in tinkerbell "I always wanted butterfly wings and bloodshot eyes" fantasyland, and 45 year old ladies who still like they think they're young. I doubt most of them would want to see what is basically "Dances with Gungan Smurfs" opening weekend.
  • freemachine
Dude, you forgot about all those grown up (then tweenage) girls who were so impacted by the love story in Titanic that they saw it multiple times in the theater. Those girls are all grown up now and will probably be drawn to the cross-cultural love story in Avatar.
  • clarencesomerset
They were drawn to DiCaprio the last time, not a blue Na'vi.
  • iec
Hey, some girls like some weird, fucked up things. Don't down the nerdy girls. Don't doubt 'em.
  • matt
    I don't know..
there's some steep competition this holiday season.
  • New Moon is a sequel to a popular film which is also a line of popular books (ugh, sadly...). Avatar is 'by that guy that did Titanic' to the general public. I just don't see geekdom getting it over enough. Sincerely, I hope I am wrong.
  • caseyjm17
Geekdom and a great story is how The Dark Knight made the most money in history. Geekdom and a good story, plus 3D and Fox whoring it out like crazy could a mean box office of at the least $100 million, at the most up to $175 million.
  • "Geekdom and a great story is how The Dark Knight made the most money in history" ...only in America. And I'm pretty sure that popular super hero 'Batman' (plus the great story) helped that title earn what it did. Avatar has nothing like that going on.
  • I think you're right, Devindra. Avatar can't possibly measure up, and any box office numbers sub-Titanic are going to be a disappointment for many. But I'm really in the same boat as you - I just want the movie to deliver on the action front and I'll be relatively pleased.
  • starscream9289
They're just saying that so that if Avatar tanks, and hopefully it won't, they won't look like idiots who just pissed away half a billion dollars.
  • Slatters
Jesus, I hear more people talking about this movie's budget then the movie itself. Unless you have some sort of financial stake in the film, I'm not sure why you'd care about its box office gross.

If it under-performs its not going to make it a bad movie. If it exceeds expectations it isn't going to make it a good movie.
  • If it fails, it would be a setback for 3-D movies. It also would make it harder for James Cameron to make anymore movies this big. So it is worth discussing, especially since the movie isn't even out yet. What are we supposed to talk about? How green would have been better than blue?
  • It won't be a setback for the application of 3D in films. It might be a setback for the amount of money that will be invested in said future 3D film. The tech, and advancements in the workflow when applying 3D are all going to originate from Avatar. If anything, Avatar is going to make 3D not a shitty gimmick and something that I will spend an extra $3 for in the future. Will it "tank?" Who cares. I doubt it will. I am going for the experience. An experience that I haven't felt since watching Jurassic Park. I have seen the 15 min of Avatar and now I know what it feels like to be a crack addict. "I want more."
  • How is investing less money in 3-D not a setback?
  • Not sure why I can't reply to your latest comment.

In reference to your question, "How is investing less money in 3-D not a setback?" I am looking at the cost from the standpoint that the technology being used will not be as expensive a year to two years from now. The movie can tank _financially_, but I doubt the reason that it will based on the tech, 3D as it's medium of choice, VFX, etc. It might fail because of the story and actors, but not the way it's presented. Will other companies be wary about investing such a great deal of cash into the next "Avatar" like movie? Probably, I can see why. However, with the rapid advancements in VFX and 3D, the cost will only go down from here on out. Just like any tv. I bought a 32" lcd 2 years ago for $585, it's now $299 at Best Buy. Same tv, same quality, just cheaper. Cost of materials has gone down and production has been streamlined.

The same goes with game consoles. Bought the 360 on launch day for $450. It crapped out 14 months later. I recently bought a new one for $250. Lighter, smaller power supply, standard beefed up heatsinks to prevent an RROD and also a HDMI output to boot on all 360 consoles. We also rarely see a game title come out on a nex-gen system that utilizes the full potential of the hardware. It takes roughly 2-3 years before a company can exploit every ounce of CPU power that a system can dish out. New techniques, a streamlined render pipeline and optimized coding are established. Cost of production on these games goes down over time. but the quality goes up(up to the studio on that part).

My point is that I think Avatar is breaking new ground on a medium that is extremely new and foreign to most. It's expensive sure. A lot of people are bashing this because of the amount of money it's taking. Well, risks have to be taken to see advancement in any field. Money has to be spent in order to make money. Will Jim and his Avatar fail? I don't think so, but if it does, it won't be a bad thing.
  • But you're ignoring the fact that new game consoles come out every 5 or 6 years and are priced at $400-600 again. You paid 250 for an XBOX because the technology was older and cheaper at that point. Film budgets have always gone up with new technology, never down. The cutting edge 3-D movies that come out in 10 years will not be using this specific stereoscopic system, they'll be using an improved and just as expensive system.
  • Slatters
If this movie "fails", its not going to setback 3D films. Its going to set back studios (even more) from investing huge sums of money into risky (ie. original) film concepts. Its safer to create sequels and remakes because they already have a built in audience.

What are you supposed to talk about? How about something based on the merits of the actual film, as opposed to the finances that went into making it?
  • inteliboy
Why someone would want this film to "tank" is beyond me. In fact it's pretty sad and idiotic.

Any film fan with a brain should be able to see the amount of work, talent and imagination that has been pumped into this film. Maybe from the trailers...not your cup of tea, no sweat, but wanting it to fail... that's some weird nerd hating shit right there.
  • Yeah, the idea of wanting a movie to "tank" is beyond me. I can only imagine what the internet nerds would have said about the Abyss months before its release lol What with the movie being cut down 45 minutes, overrun on budget, and the Aliens looking all "Glowy" (In contrast to the Geiger Aliens). I haven't seen this much hate since the "George Lucas raped my childhood" rants of '02
  • Rockie
    amen Rob
  • quintushalls
    But George Lucas did rape my childhood! :'{
  • Rick
Why is there so much debate and criticism over this movie?! It looks awwwwesssssssome. I guess I'll be able to kick my feet up on opening day because apparently I'll be the only one there.
  • kenny
should have told me earlier...i would have soo been there with you. It looks awesome to me too and I really want to see it!
  • Tenz
i don't know why your all arguing, your intitled to your own opinion...
but i watched it the day it hit the theaters...and it was amazing!! Cameron did an amazing job with the plot and ultimatly creating a whole new world.
  • cuong
I agree, the movie was like legendary to me and I know that I will buy this movie when it comes out to watch it over again and again
  • Kenny
I watched it a few days earlier and I have to say, it was epic. I loved everything about it: the graphic were amazing, the actions was amazing, it was just awesome. The story however was a little cliche but it was well done so it didn't turn out that bad. The total domestic profit so far is 200mil but worldwide it had drawn in 620million so it has already made the cost of producing the movie. I'm excited for them, the movie was terrific, and I recommend everyone go watch it, trust me, you will Not be disappointed!
  • gabidouda
Well, the movie Avatar has already made an staggering 300+ millions dollars of brute profit, it took titanic 55 days to reach this point. Avatar has done it in less than 14 days.
