CBS’ 60 Minutes aired a 13-minute segment on James Cameron on Sunday night. You can watch the entire segment, embedded after the jump. The piece claims the budget for Avatar is “roughly $400 million plus” and the segment contains a ton of cool never before seen behind the scenes making of footage in addition to the new interview with Cameron. We also get a small tour of Cameron’s office, which is filled with props from his previous films. He points to the wheel from the ship of the Titanic, and explains that he keeps it because he knows “what it feels like to be at the helm of a sinking ship.” He also shows off a baseball cap he wears on set featuring the letters “HMFIC,” which stands for “head mother fucker in charge”.

Meanwhile, 20th Century Fox clears up run time rumors in The Hollywood Reporter, claiming that the actual length of the film is 150 minutes (or two and a half hours), which “may rise to 156 minutes when all of the credits are added on, but that would be the maximum running time. ” This is a decision mandated by IMAX, which has a maximum running time of 170 minutes (with pre-show entertainment and trailers). A two and a half hour running time will allow exhibitors to have a total of five shows per day in each auditorium, with screenings beginning at 10:00am, and two evening showings in each screen, most likely at 7:00pm and 10:00pm. Of course, screenings will begin at midnight on Thursday 17th, and run around the clock for the first weekend, or until demand dies down. Fox estimates that the film will play in 3D on 3,500 screens in 2,500 locations, and will also be available in about 1,500 other locations in 2D on 2,000 to 2,500 non 3D screens.

In addition to the 60 minutes segment mentioned above, after the jump we also have a new featurette called “Through Eyes Of Colonel Quaritch”, which is of course about the character played by Stephen Lang. Also included is a couple new international posters for the film.

    -its James Cameron not Jim
-Pandora is a Planet not a moon
    so much for journalism
  • lajy
I've heard lots of people refer to him as Jim, including producers for Avatar. Jimmy, never. But Jim, yes.

And no, Pandora is definitely a moon. It orbits the gas giant Polythemis.
  • CRASHkennedy
sure it's fine if you call him jim casually someplace but 60 minutes is supposed to be serious journalism and calling him by a nickname is not seriouz bizness.

btw pandora is a PLANET. watch the featurette, he calls it a planet multiple times

btw safari doesnt recognize featurette as a real word. im confused here
  • 'Featurette' is a word coined by the film industry - it's not a 'real' word. It's not even in the dictionary.
  • exorcissy
A number of news articles refer to him as Jim. He goes by either James or Jim.

Does it really matter if Pandora is a planet or a moon? It's a fictional world, chill out.
  • Rags
-Everyone close to Cameron calls him Jim, from the actors to producers, etc.
-Pandora's a moon, as lajy points out. It's a lush rainforest-covered moon orbiting a fictional gas giant planet called Polythemis.

Pls check your facts before criticizing the author.
  • CRASHkennedy
im really confused here, is it or is it not a planet??
  • teagone
It's a moon that orbits a gas giant planet.
  • CaptainPlanet
@ Maracle2 >> what a picky anal fucker u are! stop being so pedantic and try to get laid with a donkey!
  • I've seen his office and the guy who showed me said "do you want to see Jim's office?" This was like 8 years ago. So many people call him Jim
  • EvanJDeBiase
there's an episode of entourage where james cameron personally says to vince to call him jim
  • freemachine
What a disappointing segment. I was hoping it would feature more behind the scenes and spotlight the specific technologies Cameron developed for Avatar. Instead we got a lot of biography. The biggest thing I learned is that Cameron doesn't seem to be as much of a dick as I had anticipated...then again I've never had to work with HMFIC.

As for the CGI...that shot with the light reflecting off Neytiri's face was positively photorealistic!!! This film will truly be the new Citizen Kane.
  • lajy
How riddled with spoilers is the 60 Minutes bit? If it's mostly behind the scenes stuff, I'll check it out, but I'm really trying not to watch anything new since the second trailer came out.
  • IsaacRosales
Not spoilery at all lajy, as most of the "new" shots are completely presented out of any context what so ever. That being said, I've been anticipating this movie for way too long, but after this small 60 minutes bit, I cannot fucking wait for December 18th! *pisses his pants* Oh fuck.
  • CaptainPlanet
fuck you too cunt ... stop jizzing all over urself like a pedo!

May Almightly Allah's love be with you!
  • cinefan
I am guessing that James Cameron specified 'Jim'.

I'm really enjoying the slow turning down on the volume of the hater brigade as more and more of this movie is revealed.
  • Oh, we still hate on it. It's not worth commenting on anymore, is all. *yawns* Every f*cking day with the Avatar 'news'.
  • cinefan
Are you going to put inverted comas around most of Slashfilm's stories? Avatar blogging every day = massive grass roots interest IMO.
  • Federico
I'm just watching the segment due to a couple of research obligations... But I'm not watching any featurettes. Just the trailers and news segments.

I don't want to spoil this for myself.
  • CRASHkennedy
i have a terrible feeling that this film will bomb critically.

then again, i thought terminator salvation, transformers 2, indy 4, and wolverine were going to be good films

    i hope im wrong again
  • starscream9289
    The wait is killing me.

I will cryogenically freeze myself until December 18!
  • Pat
I really want this movie to fail. Looks like fucking Delgo.
  • cinefan
    "Pat" conclusions.

Delgo was made 2 years after this movie went into pre-production, let alone the decade-old treatment.
  • 400M+ Budget?! Thats twice what Transformers 2 spent! They will never make that much back, theres not a big enough audience for this.
  • samir
That includes promotional costs btw, which is usually not included in the number for a films budget.
  • iec
    Thursday is the 17th....

that last poster looks great. so does the thumbnail that the 60-min preview starts with.
  • doktor_floyd
i cant see the 60 minutes thingee...... all i got is a black box on my screen. stupid computer..... maybe if i smack it a little....
  • dvdvision
The international poster at the bottom is FAKE ! Please stop posting fan art as the real thing !
  • Propadanda
The texture of the skin and the eyes in the bottom poster is so fucking good.
  • aspect
Jim is also known as mij on film sets
  • cinefan
Yeah, the "dark side" of his personality.

He cops to it well enough.
  • mb
The more I see of this, the worse it looks. It may do reasonably well the first weekend out, but I don't see how this thing finds an audience beyond that. This is going to be a huge letdown for Fox and James cameron.
  • cinefan
I think it will do what most Cameron films do - grow steadily from positive word-of-mouth, and show longevity. It's showing at IMAX for a couple of months on contract.
I was at the 15 minute preview, and I assure you, it's very intoxicating (providing you're not too cynical for the design and story etc (which was the case for at least 75% of those who went to the preview)).
  • Aquigley
That just got me so damn hyped for the movie
  • moses
    That guy is ancient.
  • A legend.
  • Kyle C.
I really do not like the fact that Cameron is cutting out around 20 minutes just to fit it in Imax theaters. The film wasn't even shot on Imax camera's so what's the big fucking deal about Imax. If anything, they should cut that footage only for the Imax version and leave it in for all the regular theaters playing it. The digital projection and 3D aspect is all I care about and that will be available at normal theaters. If a movie isn't shot with Imax cameras, I personally see no point in watching it that way. They just blow up the picture, which is lame. Rant over.
  • my hype is slowly building.
  • Sully
I'm calling all dudes. We cannot let this stand. We most dethrone New Moon. This film is a piece of crap. A film with such horrible reviews, and just being boring doesn't deserve to make a $140 million box office. We most stop these tweens and stop them hard. We now HAVE to see Avatar when it comes out if the reviews are Good/Great. Yes, dudes no matter how you feel about Avatar we must destroy New Moon. AVATAR $145 million opening weekend!!!!!! Spread
  • Kyle C.
You take this shit really personal, huh? Let the chicks have their flick, they haven't had one since Titanic. I garauntee that Avatar won't beat New Moon's opening. Shit I don't even think it's gonna beat Star Trek's total gross and it won't come close to Transformers 2. Face it, the flick just ain't catchin on like Cameron and Fox hoped it would. It will be considered a flop, I just know it.
  • mchops
I'm with you. screw that garbage they call Twilight and anything involved
    with it.
  • I thought its "Avatar: The Legend of Ang". I watch the video and its great and wonderful. And the effects, its superb...
  • onlinedegrees
