Summit Entertainment has announced that The Twilight Saga: New Moon has broken box office records, earning over $26.27 million in midnight screenings from 3,514 theaters. This destroys the $22.2 million midnight record held by Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince, and the previous second place, Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins sequel The Dark Knight, which earned $18.4 million in midnight earnings. Also, Summit’s re-release of the original Twilight on Thursday night on 2,057 screens resulted in $1.3 million in ticket sales.

But the real question is, what will New Moon’s numbers look like at the end of the weekend?

Here is a round up of predictions from the Box Office prognosticators around the web:

  • Dan P.
    This is just... sad.

I'm not being a film snob or anything, but there's no way the teenage girl's equivalent of a Danielle Steele novel should be making this much money.
  • why not? Teenage girls are just an important audience base as teenaged fanboys are. Get over yourself.

as for "Danielle Steel" novel reference, you forgot that SEX AND THE CITY was a huge megahit with older female audiences, too. Older females can bring in lots of $$ and it's about damn time Hollywood recognizes that.
  • Dan P.
Really? You want 'New Moon' to be the movie that makes Hollywood understand the power of females at the box office? All that'll do is convince the studio execs that women aren't looking for anything more than a few hunky guys parading around with no shirts on...

If I were you I'd hope that a more substantial movie came along to stop Hollywood from ignoring females (which they do), not a lazy, patronizing one like this.
  • Wow, well said.
  • greggorybasore
Look at it this way. If this starts a trend in Hollywood of studios appealing to fan girls then as more movie get made there's a chance that more intelligent and better written movies will also get made. Despite what some people may think, not every movie should be high brow art. There are people who want to see and are willing to pay for no brainer pop-corn flicks like this.

Also despite what you think should or shouldn't be happening in Hollywood the fact remains that this IS happening. Whether you or anyone else likes it or not, Twilight is at the forefront of a new wave in cinema. Instead of bitchin bout "the way things ought to be" maybe you could devote time to finding a way to change the way things are.

Or to quote Angry Boomstick who put it so well... get over yourself.
  • Alex
The difference is that teenage girls have crappier taste in movies and thus give money to crap films.
  • Alex_is_coolies
Hey. Calm down. Not all teenage girls have a bad taste in movies, thank you very much. I myself am a teenage girl and I think that them making movies out of the Twilight books is stupid because they aren't even doing it right [they changed the order of events]. I personally would rather go and watch Batman or Astroboy or the new Harry Potter. I'm not a "twi-hater", but some movies are definately just better and not just a waste of my money.
  • Joseph
And Sex & the City 2 is coming, and part 3 is also being filmed while there shooting part 2.
  • Craigasorusrex
Doubt it will have any legs. Nonetheless those are impressive numbers although it seems to be common nowadays for movies to break each others BO records.

Next year I'm sure IM2 will score big and "Eclipse" will then either match or surpass it.
  • buckdiddy
yeah this certainly won't have legs. but then again never underestimate the teenage girls.
  • clarencesomerset
Repeat viewings ... complete with the girlfriends in tow.
  • Exactly. I remember when Phantom of the Opera was in theaters.. I had friends that saw that movie at least 10 times.
  • ScanCase
I work at a theatre that had one of those midnight screenings and it was by far the worst one we have ever had.

With Dark Knight everyone was in their theatre by midnight and the lobby was empty however with new moon there was at least a hundred and fifty people getting concessions by the time the movie started. On top of that we had to call the police on some girls because they started a fight. I was upstairs so sadly i don't know the whole story on that one.
  • You think your midnight was crazy? i like in knoxville, TN where a few of the key stars SHOWED UP at the premiere.. talk about f'n insane i could hear the 13 year old girls screaming while i was in walmart picking up some dvds
  • One thing you do know, never break up a cat fight.
  • How long was the bathroom line?
  • Probably not long since all the tweens wet themselves the second new moon started
  • I'm hoping to watch this on Sunday afternoon to waste away my boredom.

Roger Ebert and Jeffrey Wells (of Hollywood Elsewhere), both who had enjoyed TWILIGHT, gave this sequel very bad reviews, though.
  • Dysthymia83
I'm not sure Ebert's 2 star review counts as "enjoyed" with the 1st film.
  • Peter R
But how do they compare in ticket sales at midnight? Or are these numbers changed to reflect that tickets now cost $11 at my local theatre.

I am sure New Moon beat out the others still even in tickets, because more theatres are doing the midnight thing now, but still...they might be closer numbers than the pure cash values are.
  • frug
Movie ticket prices haven't changed much in the past 4 months.
  • Tom
this news just made me throw up in my mouth a little bit ...
  • theinsomniac
I second that motion. Ugh, just ugh! Fuck Twilight! Fuck Rob Pattinson!
  • xorith
    wow, thats insane!

i just saw a trailer for it on tv during the week and i seriously thought it looked HORRIBLE, especially the scene with people turning into wolves...the cg was not very good and the whole thing seemed so cheesy, honestly...who watches these things (i know i know, 30 and 40 year old women)
  • mudywaters
This is disturbing. Never underestimate this type of market. This demographic sees these types of movies in theaters not once or twice, but probably 10 times. I have to say I never really see a movie more than once in a theater (except for The Dark Knight) and I'm sure most people are the same way.
  • This isn't a surprise every girl under 13 has been wetting their panties since the first one, this will drop in the box office by next friday and everyone will forget about it just like the first film.

I still don't see what people see in this garbage.. i guess cute emo guys? sparkly vampires? it just blows my mind
  • and I don't see what people see in Transformers or Star Trek (aka: GARBAGE).
  • fanboy_d
Dude. You thought Star Trek was garbage?! GTFO.
  • mbellerbrock
After reading your comments on this thread I like you much less now Broomstick.... Star Trek is hardly garbage. Transformers, sure, but William Shatner does not approve!
  • theinsomniac
    Okay your an idiot.
  • Star Trek was actually a good movie and a homage with good writing and acting where as new moon is nothing more then a vampire sex fantasy series for teenage girls with writing so poor my 11 year old niece laughed at how crappy it was and even pointed out plot holes
  • You have to see Star Trek first in order to label it garbage, something no one would do after watching it.
  • Alex_is_coolies
Holy crap dude. I really enjoyed both those movies. You ovbiously don't like people calling Twilight or New Moon crap yet you go around making these purely ill-informed and untrue comments. You get what you give.
  • chrissy ane
I got my tickets for the midnight movie last night and let me just tell you, THIS WAS SO MUCH BETTER THAN THE FIRST MOVIE. Um hello how hot was Jacob in this one, I swear I will be a team Jacob girl for life. The movie met all my expectations, check out some great pics I found that I wanted to share, soooo hot/great/amazing!!

    http://www.iheartradio.com/cc-common/gallery/di...
  • Joe
So, I assume, your only expectations coming into the film was that one character would be "hot", and the fact that he was makes you willing to say it was a good movie?

Dear God, I hope I never meet you.

(To accentuate my film-snobbery, I'm doing a Wrestler/There Will Be Blood double feature tonight.)
  • shadow
If your an actual girl, just letting you know you just proved women are just as sex obsessed and pathetic as the average jock who went to see Transformers 2 for Megan Fox. Go to hell.
  • Prat
Woah, what? People went to see Transformerss 2 for megan fox? wtf? in this day and age or internet porn?
Man, I just went to see freaking transforming robots fighting each other. Women are plenty available on the Internets to look at.
  • Alex_is_coolies
Women ARE NOT sex obsessed and pathetic [at least not all] so get your head out of your arse and walk in the people's shoes like me that have guys calling them sex obsessed when that is only maybe half of the female population.
  • Dangeresquetoo
Stephanie Meyers is feeding her 27 kids on my tears right now!
  • starscream9289
This fills my heart with anger.
  • On behalf of my gender and generation, I deeply, deeply apologize.
  • Pulga
That's all I can ask for. *sniff*
  • Dysthymia83
I can't believe this is so popular with women considering how blatantly misogynistic these books are. Not to mention conservative propaganda no doubt influenced by the author's Mormon beliefs. **sigh**. Hopefully this is just a fad girls are going through, like boy bands in the 90s.

I still think Kristen Stewart will make a killer Joan Jett.

And vampires don't sparkle like pieces of Cinnamon Toast Crunch. I guess when the author won't watch R-rated movies she wasn't able to learn up on the lore of the creatures she was writing about.
  • NoahS
Okay, while I can't say anything about the books (never read them), or even the first movie (never saw it), I was thinking about this throughout the entire movie last night, and while I found that there were some strong underlying conservative messages (mostly, abstinence), I also found some of the opposite.

One Example: Jacob and Bella were on the beach after it was revealed he was a werewolf. He says something to the effect of: "I can't help it. I was born this way." You hypocrite..." Perhaps I'm reading waaaaay too much into this popcorn flick, but the first thing that came to mind was the message that gay rights activists use.

And most Mormons (the one's I know at least), aren't nearly as conservative as you might think. Some are, but as with any religion there are varying levels of how strict they follow the church's "rules".

Anyways, in regards to the movie itself, I went in expecting pure teenage camp, and what I got was pure teenage camp. I've never been in a theater so packed, and the crowd response was what made it so fun. It was by no means a masterpiece (or even good cinema for that matter), but it was still a fun way to spend two hours. And it makes me want to visit Washington because some of the scenery was simply stunning. That was something I didn't expect going in.
  • Prat
My only problem with twilight is that it made pussies out of vampires.
See 30 days of night for actual fucking vampires.
  • Alex_is_coolies
    I agree completely.
  • freemachine
Isn't there a curfew for children under the age of 16?
  • clarencesomerset
To think that so many studios passed this on before Summit took a gamble on it!
  • Roland21
I have no more faith in humanity!
  • Future Vulture
My teenage brother was in a car with a teenage girl in the backseat. She told those in the front seat about how her preacher in all seriousness had told her that Mormons have horns that are cut off, after being born. She laughed. Then she fealt his head and discovered lumps under his curly hair (caused by a rare medical condition that requires occasional surgical removal throughout life). She freaked, big time. Stop the car. Freak. Freak. Freak. Funny thing is my brother is real gentle... almost too gentle in a way. I think it is safe to say I know where Stephanie Meyer's got her "Misunderstood Vampire" idea from. I give her credit for taking something so hurtful and negative like religious bigotry and turning that emotion into an entertainment empire that includes books, movies, d.v.d.s. and more. Not bad for a misunderstood Mormon Mommy of three boys. Good thing the entire family was de-horned of course. Wouldn't want a Baptist preacher getting all nervous about her success or something.
